Some newbie queries

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow owners!

I've collected my new 3-years old MK2 Elegance combi and find that: my brolly is missing; the MFD shows 'Check deadlock! Owner's manual!' whenever the engine is stopped (whereas the manual states that this occurs when the doors are locked); and (which I hadn't noticed before) that the steering wheel is misaligned a few degrees anti-clockwise. I can deal with the umbrella, but is the error message of concern (or merely imperfect manual translation) and can the wheel easily be straightened?

Cheers

The error message is normal I think, mine has always done it. I think its to remind you not to lock the kids in the car, but I might be wrong.

If you want the steering wheel to be straight it needs to be clamped in the middle and tracking reset, its very rare to get a decent mechanic that can alter your tracking and end up with the steering wheel in the middle, at least in my experience. There is a chance they have had the steering wheel off and haven't put it back on right though but it you move it to the next position your might find its too far the other way.

Thanks. So there's no coupling between the steering wheel and driving wheels that can slip? I wonder how the speed-variable steering is implemented The steering wheel is about 5 degrees out.

The MFD message is normal, don't worry about something being wrong. It had me wondering the first time I saw it after driving home...

If anyone is wondering about the manual  and (as you said) one of the many examples of iffy translation! :

The door locks are blocked automatically if the vehicle is locked from the outside.
The vehicle cannot now be opened from the inside.
This fact is pointed out by the following message on the display of the instrument
cluster after switching off the ignition.
Check SAFELOCK! Owner's manual!
CHECK DEADLOCK

Am I doing any harm by driving the car in the meantime, with a lower left hand than the right when holding the wheel at 9 & 3?

Tracking could be out, wearing the inner or outer edges of the tyres. National Tyres do a 1/2 price voucher for tracking on their website. Yeah OK, before anyone shouts, I've found our local depot to be very good at setting up the tracking on all our cars including our MKI Superb.
