4 wheel alignment do we need it?

had 4 new tyres on last week or so and decided to get the car tracked but i have been told that the Octavia needs 4 wheel alignment as the rears scrub tyres if not done and they are known for killing rear tyres

is this the case? or is it a sales pitch?

Did you have any problems with the ones that came off, other than normal wear?

 

If not, I, and my mechanic would say no, not necessary.

 

I'm sure some will disagree with us though.

Wheel alignment on Octys is a known issue and many, myself included, have required 4 wheel alignment to correct it and reduce uneven tyre wear. As per the above post, though, were the tyres you took off worn ok or we're they unevenly worn? If they were ok you probably don't need to mess with your current set up. If they weren't then I would be getting it looked at.

No harm in getting it checked but if the wear on your tyres was even, albeit that you wore them right down, then it's probably set up ok.

In that case get a full hunter or similar alignment done, not a cheap 4 wheel track like some tyre places offer.

on a full tyre change certainly I think an alignment is worthwhile.  You may want to back the negative camber off a little at the rear to save tyre wear a bit as well.

I had 4-wheel alignment done at formula one after doing the front and rear hubs on one side.    They printed a report off first and showed me the front was way out and the rears were out too.  After adjustments, printed off another report.  car drives and feels so much better on the road.  though it was not cheap to have it done.

You can do that but it won't be for free.

If they were droning that implies sawtoothing and it'll probably be worth getting done.

had a Hunter 4 wheel alignment done on Friday and all was good except the fronts needed adjustment

im now happy that my tyres should wear nice

had mine when i had four new tyres, it will help the life of the tyre, also had nitro filled, but i do 47k miles per yr on  a cab.

well worth doing the best sort are laser tracked with a before and after print out,

had mine done after fitting new suspension, all 4 corners were well out, feels a lot smoother and quieter to drive. not mind blowing but a small difference - better mpg too.

I'm glad I had it done on mine. I bought it used and it turned out that both right hand side wheels were out in both tracking and camber which, together with a nick on both rims, makes it look like the former owner may have had a close encounter with a roundabout.

I get mine done at least once a year; I do quite a few miles and tyres wear quick enough as it is. The difference in feel and how smooth it corners can be very noticeable at higher speeds too, which alone is well worth it. Longer, sweeping, fast corners is where you really notice it; the car doesn't feel like it's scrubbing or fighting it's own tyres, it just sits true and smooth instead.

 

It doesn't cost much, but is likely to extend tyre life so you effectively save money in the long-run. I get mine done at Southampton Wheel Alignment Centre and he charges £40 as standard, but often reduces this if the work is pretty quick. It always feels better afterwards.
