Question about my SatNav

Recommended Posts

Hi

Newly joined member here and I'd like some advice about my Columbus Sat Nav which is fitted to my 2012 model Superb Estate L+K 2.0TFSI.

I don't seem to have the POI option for new destinations....it's there on the list but not active for selection.  Address, Map and GPS options are all active.

Having looked through the forum it seems that some info about the unit may be useful, so I took a couple of images of the Version Info (thanks to the forum I was able to get to that screen :-) )

Should I be able to get POI's on the system?  If so, how?  Is it a dealer thing?

Your software on the unit is capable of showing POI, but your maps version doesn't have the required POI on it to display. You should update your maps version, latest being V13 (8348) while yours are 7333.

How do you get to the "Version info" screen , I can't find it on mine  :'(

Well, when I say Version Information isn't enabled, it actually is. Press and hold the "Setup" button for about 7 seconds and it'll be there in a basic form. There's a further "Developer" menu which isn't enabled.

Yeah that worked , and guess what , it's version 8348 just as you said (not that I ever doubted you)  :sun:

Thanks for the quick response Rustynuts.

I've seen mention that map updates 'can' be free, depending on the dealer...is that a fair statement?

I asked Caffyns to make sure my maps were up to date when I purchased the car....how long has V13 been available?  Or to be more accurate, what versions available in January this year?

V13 has been available since back end of last year. However, it looks as though they've possibly updated the software of the unit and not the maps. I'm not sure though as I don't know what software your unit came with. It'll be on the data label on the top of the unit mind, if you fancy pulling it out and having a look. As a guide, I have a 2012 unit here which was SW 3984, while yours shows 5238.

Map updates are something the dealer might do for you if they have an up to date maps disc. However, given that most dealers still think V10 is the latest available (even when given the part number of the latest maps) it's not likely you're ever going to get a result from them really.

Thanks again.

Don't think I want to pull the unit out but I will use your information to try and get the (a?) dealer to upgrade my maps...given that I bought the car in January this year they should have updated me to V10 at the very least by the sounds of it.

Is there an official Skoda site which lists the part numbers for V10 and V13? Or could you perhaps provide those details?  If not, don't worry...

Best

UPDATE - searching the web I found this site: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Navigation_System_Maps - is the information on their accurate to use?

Hi Rustynuts

So initial response from dealer is that they don't do map updates as part of a sale since it is not part of the Skoda Approved Used Cars warranty, so that's why they didn't do it when I bought the car. Bit disappointed in this as one of the negotiating items I used when I bought the car.

However as satnavs aren't covered by the warranty anyway I think thats a bit bogus...

The salesman I dealt with has gone away to get a price for the upgrade.

In the meanwhile I called my 'local' Skoda dealer and they quoted me £181...just for the disc.

What's your view on some of the online sat nav DVD suppliers who are a lot cheaper - ones with their own sites rather than eBay? I won't put any of their names here in case they are pirated copies of the discs...

They are all pirated I'm afraid. There's a story behind that, but it's not something I'm going to discuss. £181 is about list price for a maps update, but I wouldn't be paying £181 unless at the very least I'd exhausted all possibilities and that was for the latest version, not just whatever disc they happen to have lying about. In fairness, I would be landing into the showroom and face to face reminding the salesman that you'd both agreed a deal on the latest maps update as part of the sale. Quite how he deals with that verbal agreement (which is contractual in law as far as I'm aware) is up to him.

Thanks again - I'm waiting to hear back from him...showroom is 60+ miles away, so not a quick visit :-(

I've actually got it on my sales contract with the dealer, so its not just verbal....the question is what can I do about it...I don't really want to take them to court....

I wonder if the DVD's are cheaper in Europe???

It would be a small step to issue a small claims letter to them to jog their memory. Or tell them that you're happy to have the unit updated yourself and you'll send them the bill. After all, they won't pay £181 for the update disc at trade price as that's retail, and if they have the disc they can then update all the others they sell and mitigate the possibility of someone else having to take them to task. Either you buy a disc and send them the bill, or they buy a disc and do your unit FOC. Then ask which would be cheapest for them and which would they prefer? That would perhaps point them in the right direction of what's legally and morally the right thing to do.

If this is the case there shouldn't be any question of them not doing it .

I am still waiting 6 months on for my "new" discs to be delivered from the dealer which was also a "part of the deal"....
And a few other things that are in the hands of "Skoda UK"
even Skoda UK could not believe the excuses that the dealer has been giving me......

  • 2 months later...

So I finally got to my dealer this week and they installed and then gave me a new disc - it said 2015 on the packaging which was sealed when I got there. Had I known they were giving me the disc I would have said post it to me to save the 130 mile round trip plus the Thames Crossing charges!.

Now I have POI's  - yay!  The info screen says Map version HDD 8316 so I'm guessing V12?  Maybe not quite the latest but probably good enough for me.

Anyway happy bunny now - thanks to everyone for their help and guidance, in particular Rustynuts...
