1.6 tdi cr problem p0403

Driving yesterday and got the flashing glow plug light and loss of power,pulled over and turned off,plugged my wifi scanner in and put ignition on,no fault codes,drove normally with no power loss until nearly home and same again,this time I got p0403 egr fault.

Hoping that someone can shed some light on this for me,how much of a pig is it to sort and prices etc or could it be a sensor causing it ?

First skoda so total newbie seeking help and advice,please be gentle with me ????

If it is the egr thats at fault they are quite expensive and to top it off, its a horrible job to do yourself and an expensive one for a garage to change.

 

I've never had to diagnose one yet so not sure if it could be something else that's causing it but my gut feeling is that you will need a new one, they are quite common to fail within the warranty period as well as just after. I know a few people who have only had to pay £500 as skoda contributed the rest if it was just outside warranty and has a full skoda history.

The bottom line is the overall design is really poor so there is lots of dismantling to get to the EGR, swap it, then reassemble again. A total of around 6 hours seems typical. From one post the 4WD Yeti is even worse as a drive shaft has to come out.

 

Unless a recent change the EGR assembly is just over £320 with VAT plus I presume other items e.g. gaskets have to be replaced on the dismantled parts adding to the parts bill. The dealer price will be the best part of £1000 if not over. They may even add a diagnostic charge to determine the fault even though it takes a couple of minutes !!

 

One person recently posted that they got it changed for £600 inclusive which, relatively, was very good as if the workshop rate was £50 inc VAT an hour six hours labour would be £300.

 

One potential failure is the seals to the actuator so the gases get into there and onto it's sensor which is why it becomes often apparent after a longer run and / or if a DPF regen cycles starts.

Thanks for the info,got it booked in at a local Vw specialist for Tuesday,been quoted around £600,said it will be around 4 hours work and he has done a lot of these,working away for the week so I'll pick it up on the Friday and report back,might be time to change back to petrol me thinks

this sort of thing is now why I

 

A:- only get new cars and change regularly before the warranty expires

 

B:- no longer drive a diesel as they seem to be more prone to these sort of  EG issues and DPF issues

 

and I think EGR issues are going to get worse  / more common once DieselGate fixes start getting applied

I've been looking at petrol vehicles for a few days and found a couple of monte's and a couple of vrs,in all honesty I'm tempted to walk away from skoda for good,all the info I've read about electrical issues,egr issues and faulty engines in the vrs is putting a real doubt in my mind,that's before the emissions recall work
