AFS Fault, lights no longer adjusting

Recommended Posts

Hi all

2011 Superb elegance 4x4 estate

I have been through several of the threads for this type of fault and found them helpful, however I am now at a point where I need a little more help

I have an AFS fault , lights are working but in fixed position, both lights facing forward but focuses very short, approx 10 m in front of the car, full beam operates but is so low other drivers have not flashed me when on full beam

Actions so far

I have checked level sensors front and rear nothing obvious, cleaned connections and greased ball joints

I have removed bumper and headlights , removed curve light modules and cleaned connections, all look good no water ingress, no moisture in the headlights and all look spotless, also cleaned xenon module when there , also spotless

So , I have got hold of a replacement headlight control unit, as a final test , so intend to replace but does anyone know where it is located on the superb mk2 estate.

If all this is to no avail I may need to bite the bullet and make an appointment at the local Skoda dealer, however just had the ERG replaced and the Cambelts done so paid £1364 only 2 weeks ago, needless to say don't relish another massive bill for a headlight fault

Thanks in advance

John

Hi

Sorry don't have access to VCDS so I'm flying blind a little, I was hoping it was a simple poor connection, but even if the headlight control module resolves the issue I will almost certainly need a reset through the dealer

I just don't want the dealer to continually replace parts until they find the problem, that gets very expensive

I agree completely that a dealer visit could end up very expensive!

It might be worth contacting a local member with VCDS and ask if they'll do a scan for you:

It's definitely going to be the best way to figure out what the problem is... You can also run output tests on the headlights to check they can move correctly and read data from the level sensors to rule those out.

  • 2 weeks later...

hi all

i accessed VCDS as advised and this is the fault, it identifies 2 parts within the description

My question is the faulty part is it the:

  • headlight control module part -5MO907357C
  • or the range module part Part No: 7L6 941 329 B,
  • it also states "Sensor for Vehicle Leveling" which is yet another part in the front wheel arch.

please dont tell me its all three!!

i suspect its range module but a little unsure any help appreciated

That's the front level sensor which is located on the front passenger suspension. I'd be checking the wiring (3 wires) between it and the AFS module for any damage. Also check the sensors connector for any corrosion/water ingress.

If the wiring/connector is confirmed as good, then I'd look to replace the sensor.

There is nothing in that scan to suggest there are problems with either the main AFS module or the two headlight slave modules.

On my Octavia it looks like this:

I had this on my Superb, ended up being one of levelling sensors on the front suspension, basically a potentiometer that measures the way the suspension is sitting and adjusts the lights to suit, so if it is this it could be any one! had it done at a local VAG specialists and it cost roughly £170 all in! Sensor cost over £100 which even surprised the VAG garage, apparently someone at Skoda realised the front hardly moves under weight its just the rear so according to the garage they only fit them on the rear on later cars,

That's a lot for the front level sensor. You can pick them up for ~£30 brand new from aliexpress and fitting is a ten minute job.

As for one vs two level sensors, it varies on both car model and spec from what I've seen. From scans I collected when doing a xenon retrofit:

- The Octavia and Superb seem to have both.

- The Golf, Tiguan and Yeti seem to have the rear only.

- The Passat, Eos and Leon appear to come with either one and two sensors.

Yes I know and thats what the garage originally quoted as a VAG specialist they've changed loads! Don't know whether its because mines a 58reg but that was the price, they were very surprised and apologetic! My Dad is a parts manager at a body shop, he checked the price for me and told me it was a fair price! Obviously he could have got it cheaper but thats because of discounts!
