Dreaded oil pressure light

Recommended Posts

Just checking the basics. Was this a red oil (pressure ) light rather than orange (usually level). There are many sensors feeding the engine management cpu relating to oil inc temperature, level and pressure. As well as giving information to control the oil light these sensors can affect variable service intervals.

The 2.0pd installed in most n/s 2.0 pd engined cars such as Audi a4/a6 , VW Passat b5, Skoda Superb . The problem arose because Audi tried to refine the engine by reducing vibration with a balancer " module" fed by the same chain/shaft that turns the oil pump. Turning balancer shafts has been a problem with cars over the years (Ford v4, Saab 2.3) and this is no exception. Basically the extra stresses and strains will eventually break the drivetrain (hex drive and chain in the case of 2.0 PD)

Most (not all -eg transverse PD Passat can be a problem) 2.0 PD transverse engines ok

Just the hex drive. Why?

I was pretty sure if you've had key failure you're supposed to change the balance shaft out too as the worn key damages the keyway in the balance shaft.

Please be aware, whilst we supply the replacement 77mm x 6mm hex drive key with kits 1,2,3,4,5 this may not be a permanent fix as fitting a new 6mm hex drive to an already worn non modified balance shaft will only delay the balance shaft failure, if there is any movement in the balance shaft with the hex key it recommended that a modified to 100mm x 6mm remanufactured balance shaft is fitted, this is an Audi / VW 2010 upgrade due to the 77mm x 6mm hex drive failure, please see our kits 8 & 9 for chain and gear driven balance shafts.

I asked my son who said that the red light came on with a message low oil pressure stop.

BTW guys thank you very much for all your inputs so far and when I get back from Scotland or my son updates me I will let you know what they found. They are a local VW specialist near Newport, South Wales called Pool Garage, who have a good reputation.

Out of interest how much does a balancer shaft cost to but and fit?

Well it was the balancer shaft and hex drive key this time.vv Have seen all the parts as well. As has been mentioned above if you are unlucky enough to be caught as we have replace the balancer shaft as well and not just the hex drive. At least it was "only" £698, which was for six hours labour at £40 per hour plus vat and £360 including vat for the shaft this time and not the £1400 as last time which did include the turbo. At least this comes with a two year guarantee.

The reason the oil pressure light was not coming on at tick over was due to the hex drive only just starting to give which was fine at idle but give some revs and it would let go, bit like using a spanner that is too big it will tighten up until a bit of force is used then it slip/rounds off the corners/flats of the hex drive.
