New tyre, but now a lovely marked alloy!

Last night I gave the old girl a clean, realising I had a slightly deflated rear tyre I put the usual 32'ish psi in. Went out this morning to find it with 6 psi in, the two rear tyres needed replacing anyway. Popped down to my local national tyres got two barum bravuris 3's as that's what I run it on. Just got home to find one of them has a 3 inch scrape down the side and around a two inch chunk of paint missing. Baring in mind I only cleaned them last without a mark on them! Its obvious they have done this but I didn't check before I left stupidly... Also arrived home without any valve caps!

anyone reckon anything can be done about this? im probably being anal, but I don't weld up someone's car and put a dint in their wing.

As above once you've left no chance :(

My m8 had it last week with Demon Tweeks, had an alignment done on his M3,with two weeks old alloys on it,got home and they have kerbed pass front wheel on test drive.

Went back and the lad that did the alignment says he hasn't done it,manager sticks up for him and says 'you could have done it on the way home'

I think it's awful you go to a trusted company yet damage still happens, it's never happened before so to me it's carelessness. Looks like I'll be taking the rear two for a refurb ????

trusted company..........national tyres.

no chance they are on par with the other feckless idiots kwik fit.

Humm, I bought a set of tyres for my car, AA Tyres beat everyone once I applied my member's discount, then I found the fitter was National Tyres, I took the wheels in and left them, picked them up later and cleaned them again and fitted them to the car, every one had a "clamping" mark, on the front face - don't they know how to handle alloys?

I know a few people who have used the local national tyres to me and never had problems, In future I think I'll search for a decent independent spot with a bit more time for customers and more care. Lesson learnt I think

Why do you need to take a car for a test drive after it's been in for an Alignment.  The  Alignment Machine should  tell you if it's properly aligned.

Sounds like an excuse to take it for a drive to rag it and kerb your wheels

Any chain is only as good as the people running it. In Thetford there is a National, a Kwik-fit and two independents. The only one that hasn't scratched my alloys fitting tyres is Kwik-fit.

no word of a lie I've been at a place when the chap rubbed off the soap and instantly complained about the scratches - the shops reply was "prove it"....

Last time I used them...

Standard comment from local Costco when handing wheels in is " you do know these wheels are marked?", once I got a set of "for winter" alloys powder coated, then handed them into Costco, they all did spend a lot of time examining them before starting to fit the tyres, very little if any marks left on that set.

I believe the most important thing is that the blades on the tyre fitting jig are in good condition. If that is the case, you very rarely get any marks on the wheels.

My local tyre place has a machine where the only thing that touches the wheel is the clamps which hold the wheel in place and I think the Clamps are made from a hard plastic

The fitting/tyre removal bar doesn't touch the wheel at all, they use loads of tyre soap and liquid whilst fitting/removal of the tyre

When I was fitting tyres the only chance of damage was right on the inside edge/lip of the rim.   But not putting valve caps on is a sign of poor service to me.

Def a friendly email to them today.  But check to see if mark is smooth or ragged on the wheel.  Ragged and i would say thats a kerb, if its smooth and the paints missing I would be pointing finger at the tyre machine or tyre lever.

But like others have said,  whenever picking up a motor from a service or tyres etc always worth a check round before n after while its there.

mind an get scrape touched up, you could use a bit of 240 then 400 grit to smooth it off and then touch in.

I previously used another national tyres and told them the from two alloys had just been refurbished and they were brilliant, had a laugh with them etc. This time was a different story at another branch... Spoke to the complaints department and seems like they're going to be getting it refurbished for me. Hopefully everything gets sorted, they even said they'll replace the valve caps which I'm not too bothered about but hey hoe
