Skoda Superb III 1.6 DSG

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm choosing my company car and the strongest option is the Superb estate, and I'll go to the DSG gearbox but it's 1.6tdi. Does anyone have this combination? Is it good? The other strong option is the passat. Both SE business versión.

Thanks

If you can get a 2.0 diesel option it has way more grunt - especially in a car the size of a small planet IMHO it's needed.

I had a 1.6 diesel Yeti for a while and to be honest it was flat as a fart.

Remember the DSG box in the 1.6TDI is the 7-speed dry clutch unit - as opposed to the 6-speed wet clutch found in the 2.0TDI models.  The 7-speed has caused some issues in the past and there are concerns over longevity on this box also.

It's a company car so I only can have 1.6 unfortunately. This will be my car for the next 4 years. I want automatic as I'm driving around London and the time in traffic is too much, and always changing gears it's very annoying. But on the Passat is the same motor and gearbox, right?

You don't need anything more than the 1.6 for driving around London, it will be fine. My wife had a 2014 Octavia 1.6TDI DSG and the combination is great, plus you get auto hold and adaptive cruise control in the Superb/Passat which makes it even better.

I would think the gearbox and engine in both cars is the same. Personally I'd have a drive in both cars and see which one you prefer sitting in.

It's not only London, can be anywhere 9n south but most of the times is around London. I'm trying a test drive before I order. I'm driving an Octavia at the moment but it's manual, it's not bad but the Superb should be more weight, that's why I'm asking. :)

The 1.6 will do the job ok. While it will never win any traffic light races it is perfectly adequate. I have a mk2 FL Superb Estate 1.6TDI and I drive it all over the UK as part of my job. Today I've done about 300 miles, and while mine is a manual gearbox my last one was a Passat CC GT DSG - I do miss the auto box.

Having picked up our 150 2.0 tdi today I think it's pretty pedestrian. I can't imagine how bad the 1.6 would be... but perhaps I am just a boI racer.

It depends what you're used to, to be fair. I thought the 150 was pretty flat too, even compared to the Mondeo 150. That said in a former life I had a 103 BHP 1.9 PD TDI and that seemed to have plenty of grunt at the time, even if it was a bit slower than others off the lights. The new 1.6 does 0-60 in 10 seconds, so it's not exactly slow and would be fine for business use I'm sure. Something like a three cylinder 1.3 diesel with a 0-60 of 15 or so seconds, on the other hand... :D

OP just test drive one, nobody else can answer it for you. It depends what you're used to and, more importantly, what your expectations are. At around 1,500KG the new Superb is very light for its size (about the same weight as a Golf, Astra etc from a mere year or two ago), so the 1.6 isn't particularly woefully underpowered or anything if it's just an appliance to move you cheaply from A to B for work.

Hello

I have one Superb Break 1.6TDI Greenline with manual gearbox and i can say that it´s very good. I had a 2004 Passat break 1.9tdi 130hp and i can say ,althoug i know that the superb is a litle slower it begaves really good. The 2.0 150hp that is the real disapointment because it was slower than the passat.

Really Camarao69 ? I'm considering swapping my 03 PD 130hp Passat for a 150hp Superb, I have test driven a Superb but didn't explore limits of its performance very much, I would have imagined a 150 would have been a big step up over my Passat.

A 1.6 will do 0-60 in 10 seconds ringing it's neck out and having perfect gear changes and starts. Expect real world performance with a mere mortal behind the wheel to be much more dismal.

The point is, a car the size of the superb is really going to be better suited to a larger engine with a reasonable amount of torque. Having now spent 3 days and about 300 or so miles in our 2.0 150 tdi it is adequate (just). The 1.6 in the yeti I borrowed for a few months was slow and gutless. I did not achieve the same MPG in the same scenarios in the yeti (2014 model) as I already have in the superb due to the pressure you have to apply to the loud pedal in any similar circumstances.

If your only choice is the 1.6 and you are more patient than I, then I would assume the 1.6 would be ok... but as a personal preference I would want a bit more punch to get the big old girl to dance.

on the 1.6tdi unit, its the 50mph to 70mph zone where the power lacks / more noticeable.

The 1.6tdi will do the job of a business /city car no problem.

if i waa given lets say the choice of a 1.6tdi Superb or a 2.0 tdi Octiva, i would go with the superb as its a newer car.

And everything else you want it to do as well, whether it's a private car, business car, for local or long distance travel or whatever - it will do the job just fine.

I've got the 1.6 manual, and had exactly this dilemma. For the first 5k miles of the Superb, living in West Wales, where safe overtaking is so crucial- as our roads are crap, I regretted ordering it, and thought I should have gone for the 2.0 tdi Octavia instead. However- it's opened up a load in the last 1000 miles, and is running a lot better now. The ability to overtake, so accelerate from 35-60 is key, and whilst it's not going to break any land speed records, it does the job. It's also cheaper on BIK than the Octavia would have been. Granted- when I jump out of the wife's Golf 2.0 GTD it feels like the car is pretty sluggish, but all told, for long journeys, of the type I have to do regularly in the Superb, it's great- and far more suitable.

There's also a lot of the time around here, where there's no hope of overtaking (eg following a snake of 5 cars not willing to pass a lorry, but not giving any space for anyone else to overtake either)- in these occasions it's probably safer not to contemplate passing anyway!

I've got exactly the same dilemma, current car is a Passat 150tdi Sport Estate due for renewal and is no longer available on my employers list (cut backs), as such I've narrowed my choice on a somewhat limited list to either a Superb 1.6tdi Greenline III SE Tech or the Superb 1.6tdi SE Tech DSG. I've got a Greenline currently on trial and the gearing seems high for a 1.6, as such there is a lot of gear changing around the 25 to 40mph region whereas my Passat has the flexibility to remain in fourth throughout. Question is should I spend the extra £36.70 per month on tax for the DSG, is it worth it ?

Other dilemma is colour choice but that's another story (Candy or Moon White).

DSG is nice to have at the best of times, but on an engine that is (1) lower powered and (2) diesel it's basically a must have imho. It'll do all the lifting for you, keep the engine in the optimum power (and economy) band, and free you from constantly rowing the box because the power band is about 1,000rpm wide. I'd certainly pay the extra but ultimately only you know your finances and your tolerances.

Interesting..  as my opinion is the opposite, auto boxes are nice to drive when they are coupled with a powerful engine otherwise feel a bit slow when mated with low torque and BHP units, more so when you want to get moving quick as possible, plus add start stop into the mix.

With a manual you can at least spool the turbo up / blip it before setting off if needed or hold onto gears that little bit longer if the road ahead dictates.

The 1.6tdi dsg 0-62mph is 11 seconds for manual and 00:10 second slower for the DSG.

Decision made, Superb Estate 1.6 SE Technology DSG in Business Grey Metallic (not white). Got stuck behind a truck this morning on a country road whilst driving the trial Greenline 1.6 tdi and struggled to find the right gear to get passed by which time I'd lost the momentum. I'll let the DSG make all those decision for me going forward.

Looking forward to taking delivery.

Hi guys,

Made a test drive, enjoyed it :)

Just thinking on the equipment and color. Color maybe petrol blue, it's not very common and was the same I had on test drive, only thing is after the wash it's stained with water.

About the equipment I was thinking to put rear view camera but they told me that I have to put also the led package, I already quit the rear view camera but can't understand what's included on the led package that costs 150£. I also go for the heated windscreen, steering wheel with pads just for fun, sunblinds because of the baby. I also quit the electrical boot because it's too much, 400 + 50 for sliding trunk, on the Passat is 240, almost half, don't understand why.

What you guys think? :)

Don't worry about the petrol blue getting wet. We have petrol blue, and as long as you prepare it properly after you take delivery (decontamination, clay and polish) and then wax it, the car will look amazing and is very easy to dry and keep shiny. :)
