Bonelorry's Golf Edition 30

So here is where it all starts...Again!

I am sure most of you are aware by now that after a 6 Week hunt, Viewing 6 different Edition 30's and almost giving up that last Saturday my luck changed! I Spotted what looked like a bit of a gem last Week and sent the seller an Email asking for his number virtually straight away. I had a good chat with the seller and at the time he was waiting for his Private Plate to be transferred off the car before it was ready to sell so I told him to contact me as soon as everything was complete. He sent me a message a few days later saying the transfer was all complete.

So the next morning I Jumped on the train to go and have a look. First impressions of the car was very good, It was well prepared and drove faultless. After a thorough inspection of the car and the paperwork I was happy with everything and decided to talk money with him. Needless to say I bought it and although it was top money it was worth every penny, The best example I had viewed by far and even better than the previous 2 Tornado Red ED30's I have owned.

Very genuine guy that owned the car and a full blown car nut who is also currently restoring a Series 1 Land Rover to a exceptional standard, I ended up staying another Hour after buying the car just to look around his garage, Reason for the sale was that the car simply wasn't getting used and was a very reluctant sale. He was genuinely concerned that the car was going to a good home and stated if he had any doubts he would not have let it go. I can understand why he had such a bond with the car as he purchased the Golf when it was just 12 Months old so has owned it 7 Years.

I had a superb drive back home over the A629 in the car, Very happy with my decision to buy another ED30!

So onto the Car...

Volkswagen Golf Edition 30 Build Number #1799, Registered March 2008

Manual Gearbox

5 Door

Diamond Black Metallic

Currently on 41290 Miles, Full VW Main Dealer Service History

Matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3's all round

2 x Previous Owners, 1st Owner had the car for 12 Months, 2nd Owner who I have bought the car off had the car from May 2009.

Spec wise the car has, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Sunroof, Zenons, Rear Parking Sensors, Factory Tinted Glass, RCD300 mp3 with Ipod prep.

After getting the car home last Weekend I decided that as I still had the Civic Type R I would not bother putting the Golf on the road for a Week and continue to use the Type R. My though process on this was...

I would have lost a Month on Road Tax if I had Taxed the Golf as it was the last Week in August

My Insurance was due for renewal on that policy the first Week in October

Finally Weather depending I could do everything I wanted to on the Golf each night after work before putting it on the road...So that is what I have done.

2/9/16...

Wheels back on, A quick road test, Checked the Oil level all good. Time for some Detailing  :jumping:

Firstly I will apologise for the lack of pictures, I was battling with the Weather and after spending about 8 Hours on the car just after applying the Wax it chucked it down so the car was staying firmly put under the Car Port!

Process used for anyone interested, Apologies as it is a long one...

: Rinsed the car, Wheel arches and Wheels thoroughly.

: Cleaned the fuel filler flap. All door, Bonnet and boot-lid shuts, Front Scuttle and Rubber door window seals using Valetpro detailing brush and APC to high concentrate.

: Rinsed car again.

: Washed the car using 2 bucket method one panel at a time with a Eurow Lambswool mitt and Meguires ultimate shampoo.

: Rinsed car again.

: Wheels and Wheel Arches Detailed a few days previous so skipped that part.

: Dried the whole car using Elite XL drying towel.

: Applied Iron-X fallout remover, Left for 5 mins to take affect.

: Whole car was then rinsed thoroughly.

: Re-washed the car using same method as above.

: Clayed the whole car using Megs mild clay and Megs Detailer spray as lubricant.

: Rinsed the car again.

: Dryed the whole car with Elite XL drying towel, Dried the wheels, Door shuts and engine bay with Microfibre towel.

Then onto the polishing, I used a DAS-6 Pro Dual Action machine polisher with Orange & White Hex-Logic 5.5" Pads for 95% of the car and for the smaller areas smaller 4" Hex pads for spotting. I opted to go for the tried and tested 2 stage Meguiars 105 Ultra cut compound & 205 finishing polish combo as I have had good results with this in the past.

: Masked off all black bits, Rubber seals, Roof aerial and boot badges with 3M Blue masking tape. Also masked any overlapping panels or edges.

: First Stage was done using Megs 105 Compound with Hex-logic Orange Medium-Heavy pad.

: Second Stage was done using Megs 205 Refining/Finishing Polish with Hex-logic White Light-Medium pad.

: Bags and Bags of depth and clarity on to the paintwork, The First Stage shift most marks and gave a good level of correction, The Second Stage really cleaned the paint up and gave it that glossy/wet look. Very happy with the results and the Metallic in the paint is much more visible now.

Once happy with everything and the finish, All the masking tape was removed, The car was then rinsed, Re-Washed, Dried and ready for waxing.

: Waxed the car using Collinites No:845 liquid insulator wax, The bottle was placed in warm water to help separate the wax and turn it into liquid, Then given a good shake before application. Using a soft applicator to apply, Left 30 mins to cure and Elite buffing towel to remove.

Couple of pics...

Pre-Wash...

Post-Wash, Iron-X applied. Not much came off to be fair, You can see the Purple Colour on the floor...

29427492405_282eb58f48_c.jpg

Clayed the whole car, Not much came off the bodywork at all. The worse area's where the sideskirts, See pic...

Great stuff really nice car, having just bought an edition 35 this is all interesting stuff :)

Nice cars ED35's, Considered getting one but as with the ED30 there where not many good examples about when I was looking. Plus to get a good ED35 would have cost another £8K on top. I only paid £16900 for my MK6 Golf R earlier this Year so it kind of ruled out an ED35.

As said though I do like them.

Thanks

Always enjoy reading your project threads keep up the good work

Cheers Dan :)

New Battery!

I noticed that it was a little sluggish turning over on the initial cold starts in the morning, Probably a combination of leaving the car stood last Week while I serviced/Detailed it etc, Also the car is on its original Varta Battery which is now 8 Years old. Just about to start a row of 6 Late shifts at work and Winter is fast approaching so didn't want to risk it.

Called down to South Yorkshire Batteries in Sheffield this morning, Did a test on my Battery and charging system and the Battery came up Recharge although the Alternator was working fine. He said probably a dead cell and due to its age it wanted replacing which was what I thought anyway.

I could have purchased a New Battery online but payed a little more for the new Battery from South Yorkshire Batteries as we used them on a regular basis when I was in the Motor Trade and like to support local businesses.

Fitted the Battery at home myself, Took about 10 Mins in total.

New Battery, Went for the top spec, 096 Varta Silver E44, 780 CCA, 77AH...

Basically I knew when I purchased the car and looked through all the paperwork that the Timing Belt was going to require replacing at some point soon.

As the previous owner dealt with Skipton VW for all the cars servicing needs they advised him at the last service which was in March 2016 (I have done another one since 2 weeks ago that it was getting ready for replacing and advised that although the interval was 4 Years since the car had only covered 18K Miles since it was last replaced in 2012 that he could get away with doing it in 2017.

I was not going to walk away from buying the car because of this reason as my car was by far the best example on the market at the time and compared to one of the other ED30's I viewed and walked away from which was £1400 more and nowhere near as good condition wise I got my car at the right price so I am more than happy to put money into Servicing etc to get the car how I wanted it.

I had a few options but decided to go with an Independant and have booked the car in with Statller's and Sheffield on the 5/10/16, They are replacing the Timing Belt/Kit, Water Pump and Drive/Aux belt using Genuine VW parts.

Although I do many mechanical jobs myself on my cars I would rather have someone that knows their way around the TFSI Engine to do the Timing Belt and they have a very good reputation so I am happy giving the job to them...Plus they are local too!

So onto the next job...

Since I am happy with how the car is performing after the Major Service I gave it a few weeks ago and its driving faultlessly I rang R-Tech yesterday had a good chinwag with Ben on the phone and have booked the car in a for a Custom Stage 1 on the 25/10/16 @ 09:30... for some Gower Power. It was always my number 1 choice as I have taken 2 x cars to them in the past and have been more than impressed both times!

I am 99% decided that before I take the car I am going to fit a GFB DV+ Diverter and retain my brand new Rev-G Solenoid, For added piece of mind Probably overboard but the car looks to be on its original Coil-Packs too and although they are faultless now once tuned they can start to break down so I am considering replacing them for either some....

New O.E items part number....07K905715F

OR

New R8/Red items part number....06E905115E

Any benefits on fitting the R8 items?

Thanks Simon

Sounds good - they're a decent bunch over there, my mate takes his S4 there for servicing. Get them to give you a trip out in one of their demo motors - their tweaked Golf R is something to behold I hear  B)

After doing 6 late shifts in a row I am now off for 4 days, Nice early start this morning and had a quick hour on the Golf.

As mentioned in my post a few days ago I am getting the car mapped at R-Tech in October and although i have gone through everything and replaced the usual TFSI suspects I was considering replacing the Coil-Packs as they where the original 8 Year old items and after reading so many great reviews from fellow members about the GFB-DV+ Diverter Valve and the fact its a fit and forget item I thought I would give one a go.

Ordered the parts from AKS Tuning on Monday afternoon and they arrived yesterday morning, Massive thanks to them for such a speedy service!

As always, A couple of pics...

Just seen your thread over on the UK Saabs forum.

Did you used to own a Saab?

Looking very good. It looks so glossy and shiny.

Yes had a 9-3 Aero Coupe with a 2.3 Conversion and a Lightening Blue 9-3 Viggen too.

Reached the first Milestone....Sort of!

One Month ownership today and have covered 500 Miles since buying the car, Since my Marathon Week doing everything on the car when I first collected it I have done nothing other than put V-Power in the car and drive it...Which is a good thing LOL.

Very happy with the car and cannot fault it in any way, Did about 100 Miles at the Weekend on a day trip out and really enjoyed it. Currently averaging 33MPG since I collected it and can average 40MPG on my commute to work if the Traffic Lights are behaving, MPG is not the reason I bought this car at all but I have always been impressed with the TFSI's combination of Performance and yet still achieving reasonable Economy. The car seems to be getting better and better with each day and having had the chance to stretch its legs a couple of times goes pretty well for a standard car, It certainly feels like a strong engine and the GFB-DV+ was certainly a worthwhile investment too which has sharpened up the Throttle Response particularly between gear-changes! I would strongly recommend one to any TFSI owner.

This time next Week the car is booked in at Statller's for the Timing Belt & Water Pump replacing, Sadly though I have to wait another few Weeks after that before the Golf gets some Gower Power Stage 1 treatment at R-Tech! Certainly looking forward to that!

Future Plans...

Not going to go crazy with the car, I never bought it with the intention of going beyond Stage 1 but would like to carry out a few subtle upgrades to compliment the Re-map. After much research and consideration I am 99% decided on...

VWR Racingline Sports Dampers

VWR Racingline Sports Springs - 15/20MM

Audi TT Top Mounts

Superpro Anti Lift Kit

Subframe Spacer Plates and new Bolts just in case, I have no knocking noise or anything but might aswell replace the bolts when doing the SALK

Full Geometry Set-Up/Adjust

Keep changing my mind about replacing the wheels too at some point, Really like the idea of the VWR Racingline Cup 18" x 8J wheels which are identical to Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's but without the writing on the rims. Also considered some BBS VZ's in Hyper Silver or getting my Pescara's refurbished but would want to go with an O.E Colour so would end up getting them painted opposed to powdercoated.

We shall see!

Back at work tomorrow on a string of 6 morning's so thought I would give the car its Weekly wash, Spent about 3 Hours on it this morning and I am still very happy with the finish. It is still looking fresh after the Paint Correction I did a few Weeks back and the Collinites Wax is holding up well with plenty of beading. Thought I might as well take a few snaps of it...Why not?

Now at 41890 Miles and another job off the list done today which has pretty much completed the maintenance side of the To-Do list I made for the car, Dropped it off at Statller Power Developments in Sheffield for the following doing...

: Genuine Timing Belt Kit

: Genuine Water pump

: Genuine Aux/Drive Belt

: G13 Coolant

Very happy with the level of service I received from Steve and Craig, They certainly know their stuff when it comes to TFSI's and also deal with some very exotic and expensive machinery such as Porsche & Lamborghini too. Probably spent a good hour chatting with Steve when I collected the car this afternoon and both him and Craig commented on the Golf's condition, Steve said my Edition 30 is cleaner than what his brand new MK7 Golf R was when it was delivered! Very nice for him to have commented as he obviously sees many cars.

Although I will continue to do any Minor Servicing on my car I would certainly recommend them for anyone else in the area!

I added the invoice in with the rest of the history when I got home earlier and looking at all the invoices currently I have spent £1000 over the past 5 Weeks since buying the car....Genuine Servicing Parts inc PCV, Cam Follower & NGK Iridiums, Millers 5W40 Engine Oil, R8 Coilpacks, Rev G Diverter and then fitted a GFB-DV+, Genuine Centre Caps, Varta E44 Battery, Bosch Wipers, Timing Belt/Water Pump....Not including all the Detailing/Cleaning products and around 40 Hours I have spent so far on the car.

Cars are certainly and expensive hobby but you know what? I have loved every minute of it all so far and the car is worth investing into!

Thinking about one of the other examples I viewed prior to buying mine which was £1500 more expensive to buy and wanted all of the above doing plus the Tyres replacing, The bodywork and the car as a whole was very poor indeed, Basic spec car too.

I certainly made the right decision.

Next job which I am very excited about is a trip to R-Tech in 3 Weeks, Really looking forward to going Stage 1!

Pics from today...

 :sad1:

Well this is not the type of thread update that I am used to doing to be honest but I can confirm it is going to be an expensive Month October!

Only used the car once since having Timing Belt replaced last Week which was on Thursday and no worries, Nothing at all to do with the work I had done but got in the car yesterday to go to work and the ESP/Traction Control light was illuminated. Tried to turn it off but it stayed illuminated, Filled the car up with some V-Power en-route to work and was hopeful when I restarted the car the light might have disappeared but to no avail.

On my break later a quick search on here revealed it could be a number of things but the majority of threads/posts I read pointed to the dreaded ABS Pressure Sensor fault which is commonly known on the VAG range.

Got up early this morning and called down to my friends workshop who kindly let me do a full Diagnostic check on the car free of charge, Took about 20 Mins in total and went through everything...

Only 1 fault was found though....

30220877806_f4f94eb46f_c.jpg

Brake Pressure Sensor G201, Fault Code #01435

So a phonecall to Stattlers was made and had a chat with Craig down there, Said it was a common problem and that they had done quite a few in the past. Gave me a few options which to be honest I already knew what they where...

1. Buy a replacement Second hand ABS unit, Total unknown though and you do not know what you are going to get?

2. Buy a Genuine Repair Kit from TPS/VW

I opted for the latter and luckily TPS is only 5 Mins away from my friends workshop so I called round there, They had 3 in stock which says a lot LOL. Needless to say I purchased one and have booked the car in at Stattlers next Monday for the job doing. While it is there and part of the job is a Full Brake Fluid Change which is something I wanted to do anyway....Silver Linings and all that

It is just one of those things, I have not lost any faith in the car and it is a common problem. I could continue to drive the car as it is because in reality the fault just disables the Traction Control but the ABS continues to work however I like to look after my cars to the highest standard and regardless of cost! Knowing there is a fault annoys the hell out of me so it was never an option.

I was hoping to do the Pre-Cat Delete next Monday in preparation for the Stage 1 however this now takes priority as it is far more important so that will probably have to wait, Though I am in 2 minds about cancelling my Appointment with R-Tech on the 25th though. Not that I do not have the funds but with the Timing Belt and now the ABS issue I will have spent £920 over a 2 Week period on the Golf plus another £250 on the the Re-Map.

Annoyingly I have been in a 6 Week wait with R-Tech so I am a little torn, Maybe I just need a day or two as I feel like I have had a Frozen Cucumber inserted in my Rectum this Month with expenditure  :phew:

A couple of pics, Why break the habit I guess it is still a thread update...
