Clutch or slave?

Can you help please? I've a skoda 1.2 2005. We're getting a bit of noise when depressing the clutch, and getting into gears is difficult. It's driving but noisily. The clutch doesn't appear to be slipping as far as I can tell, in that it will pull away in 3rd. Initially I thought clutch, but now I'm wondering whether it's the slave cylinder not operating properly. Any ideas please?

^^this, it's the gearbox, not the clutch.

Yes it does, the first motion (aka input shaft) will be turning. And play in one of more of the bearings will cause the shaft to move up the gearbox thus reducing the efficiency of the clutch causing the selection issues.

I think you are replying to a post I made earlier which I later deleted. Anyway....

 

The input shaft stops turning when the clutch pedal is depressed. That's why a noisy input shaft bearing will stop making a noise at idle with the clutch down. With the clutch pedal depressed the gearbox gets no power from the engine.

 

Noise when the pedal is depressed can be caused by a worn clutch thrust bearing. Not that I'm saying that's what the problem is in this instance as I doubt it would affect gear selection. I'm with you two in that I think it's a gearbox issue.
