Target price for timing belt & service intervals

Hi, no to the forum. I bought a 2011 Skoda Superb CR 140 estate a couple of weeks ago and the timing belt is due. It's done 104k miles.

I need to get it booked in for the timing belt change. I had a quote from an independent which was £400, which isn't an awful lot cheaper than a dealer at £479 so I'm tempted to get them to do it. Should I be able to find less than £400?

Also I've noted the mileage and services the car has had below. Would anyone be able to tell me what is due next? Every 10000 miles for a minor and every 20000 miles for a major. I'm not sure what is meant by variable service. Many thanks.

The quote the indie is giving is £400 including water pump. The Skoda dealer is £479 including water pump.

I'm wondering whether to go Skoda for the stamps etc., but we'll be keeping it for years and by the time we sell it I'm not sure if having stamps in a book will make any difference.

Are there any garages in Essex or not too far that you are recommended?

Also, something I'm confused by, is that the service warning in the MFD doesn't seem to be reducing. Any idea what that's about? Furthermore, Skoda stamp in the book says 102k miles next service, so it's overdue, but it's done almost 105k and it says 7200 miles remaining in the MFD.

Check what the Indie price includes; mine automatically includes full kit, belt tensioner and a new water pump, where a dealer would charge extra for the tensioner and pump (which typically have lives of about 1.5x the belt).

Skoda's fixed price for a cambelt is £385 or £485 with a waterpump.

 

You can also ask about price match as my local dealer agreed to match the indy price if I provided a quote using genuine parts. Might also be worth doing the aux belt too as it should only be £15-£20 for the belt as it comes off during the cambelt change.

Thanks guys. I asked him about what's in the price and £400 is for the full kit, the belt tensioner and the water pump, even anti-freeze he says. What say you guys about that price?

I'll also get the auxiliary belt done as well, thanks.

I am not a fan of main dealers but check up on the warranty offered by Skoda on the work and water pump. I recall there is a two year warranty that the independent may not match.

There are tangible benefits to Skoda approved servicing. I've had goodwill from Skoda UK when the parking sensors failed (again) on our Superb mk1 at 6-7 years so well out of warranty. Our dealer argued that we were good customers, full service history (only 3 due to variable) and we got 50% goodwill. Of course YMMV.

£485 at the Skoda garage includes the belt tensioner, so for the warranty, I think another £85 is well worth it.

The servicing is a bit of a pain as it'll need a major service. The reward being further peace of mind and a stamp, but it does then make it a hefty £754.

If like you say it does result in the possibility of goodwill gestures, then that's an added bonus.

I will be speaking to them on Monday about the service plan, where by ~£21 a month gets you a major and minor service (at most). I'm not sure if that makes sense or not, given our mileage. Would it mean that I'd potentially be paying more for a minor and major service if the car is on variable servicing and we treat it kindly?

Dealer wants £380 without pump and £480 with ( without aux) . I've had a quote from local garage for £380 + v ,all inclusive with  aux belt.

 

Dealer did say it's ok until 140 k , which is good as I'm only at 120 k

My Indie quote (£442 inc vat) was Cambelt/w,pump+all filters+oil+brake fluid change

Dealer told me 140,000 .... do any of them sing off the same hymn sheet?

I not sure that they've even got the same hymn sheet!!!

My local indie (C&R Enterprises, Nottm) who really DOES know VAG vehicles like the back of his hand says 5 years for my Superb. I've owned Skodas since 1998 .. 2 Octavias prior to my current Superb and always had the belt changed at time rather than mileage intervals - 4 yrs for the Octys and 5 yrs for the Superb.

In the end though it's your choice - I will stick with my specialist Indie's recommendations.

It varies with different engines and the date of their manufacture.

 

For the engine in question the cam BELT replacement period is 5 years or 140,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I have read that it's 4 years / 120k miles. I'll check with Skoda for the official line.

It was and it was changed for some cars - in my (Irish) cars case to 140,000 or 5 years, whichever is soonest.

 

The reason to ask Skoda, if you are in any way unsure, is that the rules for your belt will change depending on the year of manufacture, engine and the country is which the belt is used (climate, air pollution and dust levels affect the belts lifetime). 

 

My 2014 1.6 diesel is 140k miles and/or 5 years in Ireland - but it could be 3 years and/or 80k miles if it was bought in Saudi.
