Airbag replacement confusion

Hello all

This is my first post here. I can't seem to find the answer to my particular query using the forum search so I thought I would ask here. My apologies in advance if it has been covered elsewhere. If anyone has a link to a definitive post/thread with the answer then I would appreciate any pointers :)

My wife has a 2008 Fabia 2, 1.2 Petrol.

Yesterday, she hit a traffic island and an illuminated plastic bollard at low speed (~5MPH) whilst trying to avoid a 6 year old on his bike who suddenly and inexplicably decided to wander into the road!

Luckily, the child and my wife were both unharmed.

The upshot is that, upon inspection, the car has minor cosmetic damage to the bumper and o/s wing, and the car needs to be re-tracked. These are easy problems to sort and I have already sourced these parts to repair it.

However, the bit I'm not so sure about is that the two front (passenger dashboard and steering wheel) airbags (but not seat or curtain airbags) have deployed, the seatbelt pre-tensioners have also fired, and the EPS (electric power steering) indicator is now also illuminated.

I have tried asking around as to what I need to replace but keep getting conflicting answers. Some say that in addition to the airbags, the ECU and the seatbelts/pre-tensioners I'll also need to replace the slip ring/steering angle sensor for the steering wheel, others say not. Some also say that I'll need to replace the collision sensor.

I'm completely confused...Do I or don't I need any thing else other than the pre-tensioners, airbags , and airbag ECU?

Any help in shedding any light on this is most appreciated.

Thanks,

Niall

something don't sound right

I didn't think the airbags were supposed to deploy below ~20mph, I had a full width front impact in my old roomster at about 15mph and no airbag deployment

I would also check the front crash bar etc as you may find more damage hidden behind the bumper cover, look inside the engine bay and check all the inner wing structures for any ripples or distortion

even 2nd hand you will be in three hundred or more just for parts

Given the safety aspects of this problem, I'd not mess with the vehicle yourself. It needs to be assessed professionally by your dealer. If you don't get the repairs right, there could be considerable detrimental consequences for anyone using the vehicle. I've worked on vehicles that have had very minor collisions with kerbs etc where no apparent damage has been noted. But the reality has been the damage has all been underneath and in the engine bay, and has been quite costly to repair. I hope it's an easy job though and wish you lots of luck with this.
