Right radio frame for my Yeti?

Hilleri

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a Skoda Yeti TDI 2.0 (year 2010) with autoclimatronic and Swing-radio. Dashboard look like this:

I bought 8" android car head unit. Joying JY-VL130. It looks like this:

JOYING%208%20Inch%20Android%205.1.1%20Lo

Here's dimensions:

JOYING%208%20Inch%20Android%205.1.1%20Lo

Now I need a radio frame. Went and bought this but not quite sure if it fits:

Is there anyone who owns Yeti and Joying 8" HU? I have a hard time to understand what kind of frame do I have to buy?

Llooks like the original suround would be a better fit. Try both over the head unit before you fit it.

Could you post up a little review of the headunit and how well it works when its done?

I certainly can.

And I made this topic kind of proactive way because I don't have HU or frame yet. (and already ordered frame 5L0858069H seems to be wrong anyway so..)

Yes. I'm absolutely sure. And as I said, order one from Briskoda Parts and it'll be here in a few days. Order one from Superskoda and it'll be weeks and also it'll cost more. Go ahead, ask me how I know...

I guess you must have replaced the one I nicked out of your Yeti  :D

Hey guys I know this is BRIskoda forum..but I'm from Finland. So I quess Briskoda Parts doesn't deliver to Finland...

By the way, is 5L0858069L 1QB  same as 5L0858069L without those last three digits? Is it colourcode or something?

For christs sake DO NOT BUY one of these Chinese satnav units.

They have a reputation for catching fire!

There is a reason why they're so cheap.

Buy a used Columbus or Amundsen instead.

Good advice , this is exactly what I did after being guided by Briskoda Members

The same units are manufactured under a whole host of different brand names. But they all originate from sweat-shop Chinese factories and manufactured to a very poor standard.

From my other/previous cars & internet forums I have used I know of about 7 or 8 instances of such Chinese units catching fire - one as recently as last week in a Smart car.

Just do a google search for Chinese car radios catching fire and you'll be horrified at how many reports there are out there.

I'm going to do that, though Joying is already installed. :)

Have been using it just for a couple of days but first impressions are "wow, it really works like a charm". Installation was easy and it's basically plug'n'play. Installed external GPS antenna top of the HU (inside dashboard) and signal is as good as it can be. Sound quality is a bit better than Swing had and sound can be adjusted from HU's amplifier program. For internet access Joying uses hotspot from my phone. Now I can use Spotify etc. straight from HU which was important thing for me. Phone is connected to HU via bluetooth. I did'nt install external microphone because HU has internal microphone. Microphone is in left top corner and when driver sits left side of the car it works great. Don't know what happens when driver sits right side like you guys and girls do. Startup takes about 20seconds and HU shows status of doors (open), parking sensors, and climate control settings. I'm really happy for now. Of course if it sets my car on fire then I won't be but at this moment everything looks and sounds really good.

Hi, I'm new here and came across this thread in web search results.

I've been stuck with very few options to upgrade the stock bolero unit that came with my yeti 103kw 4*4 in 2011. In this India market, there's nothing available at the dealer level either.

These Chinese units are unfortunately all I can go for given the funny shape of the current headunit itself and the corresponding cut out in the fascia.

My question is: in assuming you ( Hilleri) did finally install the trim piece that corresponds with the navigation-capable headunit ( Columbus et al), what is the fitting/ gap between the joying headunit and the new trim piece?

I'm asking because the Amundsen/ Columbus trim seems to have a straight edged cutout.. but these Chinese headunits have a curvature on the sides that decreases the dimension on the lower edge.

I'd really appreciate hearing specifically about this aspect.

I don't have it yet but it (this one) should be here in few days. Then I can take pictures of it.

There are 2 shapes of head unit. The funny shape Bolero style which you currently have fitted, and the more conventional shape Columbus style which could also be an Amundsen.

If you want to replace your Bolero then you can either go for a similar shaped head unit (either another Bolero or an aftermarket unit with the same shape) or the other Columbus shaped unit (either a Columbus, Amundsen / Plus, or again an aftermarket unit) and simply change the fascia to suit the new shape unit.

Either of those options is simple enough. The first one you just replace the unit, and the second one you replace the unit and the fascia trim. It really isn't any more complicated than that. So you could buy an Amundsen or a Columbus, and the correct trim to suit it, and stay OEM.

@Hilleri, @Rustynuts

Thanks again for your inputs!

Some context to my requirements: Indian skoda dealers do not stock any form of OEM head unit, and definitely not the bolero and beyond types. Even when bought new, the newer Octavia is only now coming with the new mirror link bolero unit.

It's got a different shape and I think there are compatibility issues anyway between the earlier MIB 1 units & MIB 2 versions available now. Besides, it's not available for purchase here.

The facelifted yeti in India is still being fitted with the old bolero unit like the one in trying to replace, but with MDI and the Bluetooth module finally added! So that's actually ancient as far as what the rest of the world gets for the same or less money!

Upgradation of hardware from this country is therefore a dead end, and I've been trying to get some decent functionality around navigation and Bluetooth since I picked this car up in February of 2012.

As an android user, Android auto is something I agree with philosophically. Consumers shouldn't be stuck with hardware that doesn't get updated by the local manufacturer arm, and software that's a couple generations behind, even from the more premium auto companies. In Europe, you at least have the choice.

So, long story short, I've been looking at android auto as a way to keep hardware separate from functionality that hopefully can keep up with the times.

Since that too isn't possible in India, especially as OEM, I'm looking at android head units instead. Hence the question.

I do get the bit about matching the trim to head unit shape. My observation was that even for the trim piece meant for use with the straighter head unit, the Chinese likes of joying may not really be an exact fit given they are curved to fit VW vehicles more than Skoda vehicles.

I'm looking forward to Hilleri posting pics after the trim arrives. I'm headed for a three week driving vacation in the bigfoot anyway, so hopefully this will be something to look forward to when I'm back.

Thanks again!

The same Skoda Columbus unit is fitted in VW cars as the RNS510. It's essentially the exact same unit  with a different branding and software for the different makes. The aftermarket have copied this shape and produced head units to the same specifications, and as such the trim for the Columbus will also fit the aftermarket ones. Same with the Amundsen units, these are essentially the VW RNS310/315 units and are the same shape and fitting as the Columbus/RNS510. Unless you choose an aftermarket head unit which has been particularly badly made, or is not suitable for the Columbus/Amundsen fascia, then you should be okay fitment wise.

As an aside, you don't need to buy a head unit specifically from the dealers, you could buy one from another country and have it shipped to your country. However, I don't know if you'd manage to get maps data for India for the Columbus unit, or even the Amundsen. If that happens to be then an Android unit might be the better bet.

Map software for India on the OEM units bought elsewhere is non existent, because there are no maps offered in the country on skoda or vw vehicles for that matter.

And Indian dealers invoke the warranty to avoid any VCDS coding.

I'll take a chance on the trim + aftermarket route and lets see how that goes.
