Car running 6 degrees cooler after service - wondering why?

Guys - I had the car serviced a few weeks ago. Have done a few regular long runs and my usual short runs and have noticed that the car (2014 FL, 1.6 CR, manual) is consistently running 6-7 degrees cooler than pre-service

For example, on long hill climbs I used to hit 110 degrees, now the highest is 104. When I used to motorway cruise at 104 degrees, I know sit around 98 degrees.  It is like this across the range of use and the car also takes a little longer to warm up. I noticed it the day after service (same weather and air temps) and it has remained consistent.

She runs as well and as economically as it ever did (no change to mpg or smoothness etc over 1200 km since). I'm just intrigued as to explanations...? Can a new/clean air filter on a car that had only done 12,000 miles have this effect?

The service performed was a full one (oil and filter, air filter etc) and the dealer summary has something along the lines of "diagnostics and any required updates").

Factory oil out and new oil in.

What oil went in, Maybe it was something better than 'Castrol / Quantum' , some decent oils have a car running lower indicated oil temps and also more efficiently, and also this can mean better fuel economy,

because cooling oil takes energy.

Then was a Software Update carried out, not 'the Fix',  but an Update ,  or even 'The Fix'.

There could have been an update - but being a 1.6 - it wont have been "The Fix", we wont be seeing that here for my car until the end of the year at the earliest....

I must admit, I don't know exactly which oil "brand" went in - as it was a main dealer, I would assume Castrol  or Quantum, 507 compliant. Castrol Edge was on sale at the parts desk....

I'd say it's down to the oil change. Even just new oil will show an improvement if the old oil was starting to break down or carry a lot of deposits.

Thanks chimaera. This is my first VAG diesel - I've been on large BMW straight six diesels (last was a 2007) before the Superb. I'd have seen 1 or 2 degree differences on those after an oil change. That said, they didn't work too hard or mess with half the emissions overheads/economy toys / start stop etc that my 1.6 does (didn't get  close to my current mpg either!).

Assuming you are referring to the oil temperature display on the central display then of course the oil will be cooler.

It is brand new, fresh oil performing it's lubricating and cooling function far more efficiently.

Remember fresh oil is the lifeblood of the engine and turbo.

Yes, you're right - I was referring to the oil temp on the central display. With you on the lifeblood aspect - the car was set for variable servicing but i switched to annual (not a great believer in saving on oil and air filters!)

What I wasn't used to was the size of the temp change (i was used to a couple of degrees on BMW diesels). The oil in it was just a year old and I had only put about 6000 miles on it - hence i was intrigued by the 6 degrees difference. Of course, I only have the original source dealers (I used a different one for this service) word that the oil was changed when i got the car at 11 months old and 5000 miles.

He could have just ticked the service booklet and reckoned the existing oil was OK....so its also possible that the oil was 2 years old despite the service booklet box ticks.

I would be surprised if they changed the air filter at 12K, not unless you held one of the receptionists at gun point.

Or did you pay extra for it?

TheRobinK,

Did you get an invoice with the parts and parts numbers of components and oil used?

How much did the Service cost or do you have a Service Plan.  The Parts Invoice should still be provided and the Health Check list.

Did they inflate the tyres at the service and were they higher after the service than before?

They changed it - I checked!

They are a good outfit and i didn't need to take my guns out.  As this is my first Skoda and my first visit to the local dealership, I asked to see the Service Manager. I told him that I would give him my business if he promised me that anything that is listed as "if necessary" - like the air filter - gets done regardless. If he did that, then i would keep using them. I also didn't mention a few things that i thought should be done (handbrake needed tightening - spare was flat - engine shield was missing a plastic screw) that was all on their checklist.

Brought the car home. Everything was done and I went into the airbox to check the filter was too. Door hinges regreased and all. I've ripped new ones for dealers in my time but these guys did what they said on the tin.

Just as an aside - I've been in three Skoda dealers.

(1) The dealer I found the car at - who i had to, ahem,  "remind" to install a new battery (car was in the showroom and you just know the battery has been run down too often). OK showroom, ok coffee, pretty friendly.

(2) A dealer closer to me who had to do a warranty fix on the rear heated seat. Excellent fancy showroom, very friendly pleasant staff dressed like operating room medics, washed the car, bloody useless at maintenance, forgot to reset airbags.

(3) New local dealer. Half arsed showroom, god-awful coffee, mechanics with dirty hands and overalls, work done right and better than asked.

See a pattern there?

I did - going to have to go locate it now as I thought I left it in the service book after I checked that it had been filled out. Not there.

No service plan for me, fixed price servicing, €189 is the current special.

FYI - It's an official Skoda dealership, so the service book was dealer stamped and the body damage/health checks etc noted and the relevant boxes ticked in that and also stamped.

The printout showed the diagnostics were clear as well as a the usual system printout with the parts descriptions on the left and the part numbers/quantities on the right.

I didn't check the road tyres so I'm not sure if they put air in them. Before the service they were at 2.2 bar front and back (as pert he fuel cover sticker). I checked them before driving across the country on Thurs/Fri and they were still at 2.2 bar (3 weeks after service). If they put air in, then they did it to 2.2 bar (32 PSI). They did put air in the spare to the right bar.

In that case the Fuel filter should have been changed also but you would be hard pressed to tell whether that was done or not unless they left some dirty fingerprints on the housing.

Glad to hear somebody is pleased with the service they are getting though  :D
