Exhaust gas temperature sender

Recommended Posts

My Fabia 1.6 TDI (105) has thrown up the following error codes.

P247000: exhaust gas temperature sender (bank 1 sensor 4), short to earth

P214600: power supply injection valves (bank 1), open circuit

I was driving back home after a few days from a different office and took a shortcut. This shortcut is up a hill (1,500 above sea level) and cuts about 20 miles off the 85 mile journey. It's a steep and winding road and I was driving the car hard, but not daft. Oil temperature was about 95 degrees.

On the decent into a village the glow plug light flashed, soon followed by the engine management light. I stopped the car and switched off the ignition assuming it may reset. No such luck.

The car didn't go into limp mode and I had full power. I drove the car home and left it for a couple of days. Both the engine management light and glow plug light have gone.

As I can do most things mechanically wise, except access to VCDS, so I put the car to a local garage. They scanned it and it threw up the errors listed above.

The mileage is 62k. It's serviced every 10k miles with Castrol Edge 5w30 oil, and I use genuine parts.

I replaced the glow plugs at 40k. Before I bought the car the EGR cooler valve assembly was renewed under warranty back in 2013.

Before I start replacing anything - any ideas what To look at first? Do I replace the exhaust temperature sensor, or the loom to the injectors?

I had similar symptoms, glow plug light, engine management light, no power loss

Turned out to be the inherent exhaust gas temperature sensor problem, requiring replacement

Without diagnosis it's impossible to say what you need to change.

Short to earth and open circuit faults on two seperate components looks like a wiring fault.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what you mean by diagnosis? That's the faults they pulled. What if anything do I change, or simply run the car until it comes up again?

With error code above for the gas temperature sender (bank 1, sensor 4) can you or anyone else identify which sensor needs replaced please? A screen-grab from ETKA would be useful!

What I mean is it might not be the sensor at fault. There is a chance it is but diagnosis will check to see its not wiring etc.

Temp sensor 4 is actually the third temp sensor in the exhaust system. VAG count the lambda probe as a temp sensor also. The temp sensor is located after the DPF at the back of the engine and connects at the bulkhead. The sensor has been subject to many revisions and technical bulletins as it is prone for issues.

So after the car was scanned, the warning lights for glow plug and engine management light were removed. Couple of days later the flashing glow plug light came back on. Back into my local garage to be fixed. Still not sure what they did as I've been away all week working and the invoice hasn't come in. I picked up the car on Friday and used it for two trips - now the diesel particulate filter warning light has come on. I'm genuinely surprised, as the car does 15,000 miles a year and regular long journeys on the motorway at 60-70mph 2 days every week for an hour.

I took it out for a spirited run tonight to see if that would clear it, but no success. When I got back to the house the car was vibrating slightly at idle, as if the idle was intermittent?

Losing the plot with the continued emmision issues. I'm hoping it's another sensor, and not the DPF given the car is used daily and gets a minimum run of 50 miles per day. Not sure of its worth trying Forte diesel conditioner straight into the fuel filter?
