2.0TDI 170bhp - chirp sound under boost

Hi all,

I mentioned this problem in another thread, but more to see if it was an inbuilt characteristic of the derv unit to "chirp" when under load.  It appears not.  This kind of mirrors my own first assumption, which means there is something amiss.

My car is a 2014 Yeti Outdoor 4x4 L&K with the 170 2.0TDI.  It's a manual with 24k on the clock and recently bought from Caffyn's Tunbridge Wells.

Basically, the car exhibits a "chirp" or beginning of a whistle once boost pressure builds.  Either from around 1.5k rpm or higher in the range if you make a demand for power (and thus significant boost under load) but the noise stops once boost pressure has been built.  So it seems it's really as the boost initially engages.  As said, it does it under load but also makes the same sound when revved from idle, with the car in neutral.

Both my wife and I believe it's coming from the centre of the car, from behind the firewall.  A quick look yesterday notes that the turbo is located there.

I've had a brief look for loose, split or missing hoses, but can't see anything.

Otherwise once the car is "on boost" it pulls hard.  But I haven't driven any other 170s with which to compare it.  I don't believe there's any performance missing at the mid-high range, although I have been surprised at how unwilling it is at lower rpms to get going and feels like it has a bit of turbo lag.  Not sure if this is a characteristic of the engine or whether this points to an issue with boosting?

The car is still under warranty under May and then topped up with Approved Used warranty until the end of Sept 2017 and is booked in with Vindis Cambs (my local dealer) to be investigated on 10/11th October.

- Question for you guys and girls - has anyone come across anything like this before?

- If so, what is it?

- Any mechanics on here like to hazard a guess?

- Should I continue driving it, in your opinion?

Many thanks! :)

Nor mine, but having previously come from an Audi PD140 I found the 170CR to need more revs. Initially I thought I was driving a petrol car in comparison.

My old Fabia vRS did this, when the turbo is under max boost, accelerating though about 2000-2500rpm it would whistle and then subside. It is down to the turbo providing max boost which does go down as the revs rise.

I think the technicians will say no problem there sir, a lot of them do that.
