Scout HIDs

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Got a 2008 Scout with factory fitted (I presume, as it was bought at 10 months old) HIDs.

Are they easy to replace ? Is it a DIY job ? They look very fragile !  Have seen some DS2 Osram Nightbreakers on Amazon for silly money (any good ?)

Car is over 8 years old and I think the existing bulbs are "wearing out" - light spread close to car not as good as it was.

Any way of checking light output ? no problem passing MOT a few months ago.

Thanks,

Lloyd

When the bulbs start to wear out they generally start to go yellow or go funny purple colours.

What you may find is that the dome projector lens may need cleaning. They sometimes go a bit cloudy and reduce the output and affect the sharpness of the beam.

If the Osram D2S Nightbreakers are less than £50-£80 each they will be fakes. Just google Osram fakes Amazon and eBay are full of them.

Few of ways to check they are factory HID's:

- do they go down/up when starting the car?

- do you have headlight washers?

- is there a headlight range adjustment dial next to the instrument cluster brightness dial?

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

The car has headlight washers, the beams go up & down when you switch on, there is no headlight adjustment.

Yes, they are D1S bulbs (square ballast)

Ok on fakes !! seems that a lot of dodgy sellers are using Amazons good name ?? to sell junk !  Birkenstock have pulled all their footwear off Amazon for that reason.

Will pay the price & get "proper bulbs" from a reputable dealer. Any recommendations ?

Will  have a go at cleaning the projector lens before changing bulbs.

Another question - the bulbs are easy to see (back cover) but hard to remove ? with the headlight unit in place. Do you take the headlight unit out (as BMW -  U Tube video) and if so, has it just got the one retaining hand screw ? can only see one ! If you can, easy life !

Great feedback,

Lloyd

Can recommend hids direct as they sell genuine bulbs.

Best to pop out whole headlight unit, remove the white plastic but, push down on the lever and pull, the whole unit should pop out and then disconnect the wiring. You need some torx bits to remove the back cover and bulb holder.

One of the great designs on the MkII, the headlight is easily removed from the car so that you can work on them from the comfort of your kitchen table...

Hi Guys,

Thank you to all who replied to my post, especially Silver1011's advice, andy2407 for great photos for headlight removal and willydog for info on suppliers of the bulbs.

These forums do work !  Great to know there is so much advice available !

Just need someone now to listen to two odd noises - but that's going to be another post !

Cheers,

Lloyd
