Which Skoda Do I keep / Sell? --- NOW KEEPING BOTH!

Multicar insurance renewal time and it's too high to justify keeping 2 cars when I don't need 2. Initially I got a multicar policy to give me time to decide which car to keep and I am still no closer as I like both for different reasons. That said though, one should really go.

Mk1 Octaiva 1.9 TDi(90) 2001:

  • Well above average condition in all respects
  • 61700 miles hit today
  • 5mm tread on all 4 M&S tyres on pristine correct alloys
  • Timing belt full kit and pump changed at 44K miles after I bought it 2 years ago
  • Large size in practicality / flexibility sense
  • Tank average real world normally around 63mpg
  • £130 a year to tax
  • 1 owner from new before me garaged from new (on drive since I bought it)
  • New windscreen recently fitted
  • MOT - Sep 2017
  • It's green!
  • Cost to insure on it's own (GoCompare basic quote) £263.85 (confident I can get this down to under £200 shopping around)

Mk1 Fabia vRS 2006(56):

  • Average condition for age in and out (I am picky) Good stock non molested example though.
  • 82000 miles ish
  • 5.5mm tread on all 4 summer tyres on stock alloys (ideally need a refurb paint only)
  • Timing belt full kit and pump (gates) changed at 78K miles just after I got it a year ago
  • Ok size for my circumstances, but I do like to have some extra space in reserve
  • Tank average real world around 52mpg
  • £145 a year to tax
  • 1 owner from new before me and good service history documented (just serviced a week ago)
  • MOT'd - Jan 2017
  • It's black!
  • Cost to insure on it's own (GoCompare basic quote) £266.90 (should be able to get a bit off this shopping around, but a fairly competitive quote for a vRS these days)

Big thing being is that I HATE selling cars now, I've owned 30 odd cars and bar these 2 sold all the others and I really detest the process now.

If I keep both it will cost me:

  • £500 more for Insurance
  • £130-£145 for VED
  • £37.50 for MOT
  • £50 ish for either cars general servicing costs for the next year

Total £717.50 - £732.50 and that's the basic costs. I don't value to benefits of having both cars that high and it's about £300 more than it cost me this year to do it. The slightly annoying thing is that I spent time and money to put 750 sq ft of parking in place of my front garden for the owning of 2 cars and to help access for bike, which will look silly with 1 car lol

So any ideas which I should go with? If I could put up with selling both I'd just get a nice Superb to replace them both, a 170 estate

From what you've written the Octy seems to suit you better if that makes sense? The added bonus being you would then sell the more expensive car meaning more cash in your hand ;)

The VRs has a bit of a following, the MK1 not so much.

If you have to sell one I would say sell the Fabia and put some money aside for suspension and other bits that will need doing on the MK1 eventually.

TBH the money isn't that much of an important factor when it comes to cars of this value. I still have the money I sold me 2011 Octy vRS for at just uner 3 years old and bang on 23K miles in an ISA for a rainy car day. I'd almost consider SORN'ing the vRS for the winter and split the usage on one policy in that way, I have some space on the drive to give it's wheels a few turns once a week to keep it alive and vice versa for Octy. Could keep one down the side of the house and finally get round to building my carport for it hummmmm. More bloody money on cars! I really am trying to be sensible... In an ideal world I'd prob say keep the vRS as a hack and get something like a 350Z as a purely weekend fun-mobile and summer road tripper, but I am such a proper tight Skoda person now I shudder at the thought of the MPG :o

VRS, could be worth a few ££££ in years to come

My vRS to make it worth being a keeper needs a few wee carpark moron pin dents removed, and while a good machine polish would do it wonders now, it would not be worth considering as a long termer unless fully resprayed IMO. It was initially bought as it came up for sale, I saw it, I wanted it and within 90 minutes I'd been to see it and bought it, Octy would then be sold, but I couldn't bring myself to sell it at time as it was worth more to me than I would have gotten at the time. I have since had my use out of the Octy and put 20K miles on it since I bought it, unlike the Fabia which has done around half the mileage the Octy does. Octy to be a long term keeper, needs nothing more than a polish as it's other than a few swirl marks I never got round to addressing, immaculate and I use it as the work horse LOL

I called Aviva this morning to just go through the normal motions and got the standard line when I asked as to why a 50% increase in premium despite older, still no accidents/claims ever, more NCD etc etc Then as if by magic without doing or changing a single thing suddenly managed to take £60 odd off the quoted price and fairly abruptly didn't want to discuss it any further so I checked to make sure my policy wouldn't auto renew and asked about getting my proof of no claims to take onward as it just wasn't happening. Called Admiral who quoted me about £20 more than my new lower Aviva price and the lassy on the phone was more than helpful and got it down by another £60 odd making them the cheapest. After much discussion the price stopped budging at all. Currently my multicar insurance option has narrowed the gap and is £130 more than last years premium, I don't expect it to drop dramatically, but U'd have liked it to stay roughly the same insurance premium tax went from 6-9% and all that so didn't expect such vast variations.

New set up for running 2 cars looks like this as such:

  • £430 more for Insurance
  • £130-£145 for VED
  • £37.50 for MOT
  • £50 ish for either cars general servicing costs for the next year

Total £647.50 - £662.50

My overall thing last year was that to keep on both cars was only really costing me about £400 for the year for all of the above and it gave me a spare car, a chance to work on one and take it off the road if I ballsed something up and not be left stuck. Walk out last minute in the morning at 4am and a flat tyre, dead battery or a random gremlin, no drama I just jump in the other car :cocktail:  Drive to commute in comfort and economy, or drive more for the pleasure of it.... As I type this I am starting to sell it to myself again :( I did say before I got my renewal that I wouldn't pay more than £600 and current quote is at £680... After the initial and shopping around prices I thought £650 as a new ceiling.

Randomly Aviva sent me my proof of no claims as my full NCD entitlement twice, individually against each car and this was done on the spot while i was talking to her via the phone and she said thats XX years on each car then, I stopped her and pointed out that my earned NCD was used on the vRS and they had 'mirrored' it on the Octavia as opposed to it having another separately earned NCD of it's own. As I was explained to when I took it out, I'd get another years NCD on the vRS and 1 year on the Octavia if I left after the year, or the additional year again mirrored onto Octy if I stayed. Admiral either way on the phone to help lower the price agreed to do exactly the same and checked my NCD entitlement with their shared database and my existing policy No. As my NCD certificate is written it gives me my full NCD to take onward on each car which if I took out 2 separate policies would get my insurance down to about £450 after shopping around on each, but I don't think that could be correct that I would be entitled to it this way?

Ref that NCD thing, I called them up and asked how can that be and to check it for me pointing out I came in with one lot of NCD and they merely mirrored it as an intro offer so how can I have 2 full lots now to take away with me on my travels? She went and looked over my policy confirmed what I brought and where from on which car and said that's how it works with out multi car policies, the first year if we offer to mirror it, it's an introductory offer, but after completing that policy it becomes a full NCD awarded. Told me I can take out 2 different policies with 2 different companies and take my 2 lots of NCD with me and use one on each. She said "I know, it's a great deal isn't it". She even gave me some comparison site to try for comparing levels of cover.

WOW! Plan C = BUY MORE CARS!

Updated rough costings (before insurance haggling begins X2):

  • £250 more for Insurance
  • £130-£145 for VED
  • £37.50 for MOT
  • £50 ish for either cars general servicing costs for the next year

Total £467.50 - £482.50

This is an accurate depiction of FUBAR right now  :cocktail:

  • 2 weeks later...

That video clip is from 'Communication Problems' but strangely enough, on the original BBC audio taped recordings was called 'Mrs Richards'

Bit of trivia for yer :D
