1.8tsi oil consumption

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have an 11 reg 1.8tsi with £68k on the clock using silly amounts of oil. It's been to the dealer (from whom I purchased the car as an 18mth old approved used and who has carried out all services) and they have advised new pistons, piston rings and various other bits and pieces. They have quoted £1500 parts and 26hrs labour and are currently contacting Skoda about a contribution.

I have two questions, I suppose:

Is that quote reasonable?

And what sort of contribution should I be looking for from Skoda?

I'm aware that this oil consumption issue has cropped up before and am hoping someone can give me a steer on cost to me to put right.

Many thanks,

Unless it needs a rebore rather than just bore honing (sorry; suggest using Wikipedia if you don't understand the terms) I see no reason why it would need new pistons rather than just new rings.

A well known and well documented issue. Skoda UK are only too aware of the issue.

Push for a 100% contribution to the repair. The issue is down to a manufacturing defect.

Wait to see how much Skoda are going to contribute, then compare the reduced bill to an indepedant garage quote. Bear in mind you'll get a warranty on the repair if you go via Skoda, but this normally comes at a cost.

Buying approved used together with a full main dealer service history should see an offer of goodwill from Skoda. Is this your first Skoda or can you prove loyalty to the brand too?

I assume the dealer is pursuing the goodwill for you? Sometimes it works in your favour if you also contact Skoda UK too. The dealer might plead your case but he won't be as determined as you might be. Give Skoda a call and ask them to open a case...

See here, an unhealthy combination of failing tensioners and excessive oil consumption...

Play nicely with Skoda UK, but if they start pushing back pursue legal action. A £50 letter from your solicitor might well work a treat. Hopefully it won't come to this.

Take some time and research this site, there are more than enough threads on the oil consumption concerns.

Here are a few to get you started...

Skoda might try and give you the default "this is the first case we've come across sir" but don't sit down and roll over. Make it clear that you are more than aware of numerous complaints. Also note that these links are specific to the Superb. Venture over into the MkII Octavia forum and the real scale of the issue becomes clear.

Good luck.

Thank you Silver1011, that's very helpful. It's my first Skoda, but I hope having followed the rules with regard to servicing will count in my favour. The dealer has been fair so far, there has been no obfuscation, they just said this is the problem and offered to contact Skoda on my behalf. I will wait to see what they come back with.

Also thank you KenONeill, with luck Skoda will offer to fund the repair, if not I'll pursue that piston point further.

Try and push for a new engine.

That option will guarantee a first time fix, I'd be a bit dubious about the piston replacement with the car at almost 70k.

it will be a higher parts cost but a lower labour cost.

I've just done one and skoda were very helpful with it.

Many thanks all,

So. Two weeks later Skoda have still not replied. The dealer, after prompting, has said he thinks the best offer could be 70% towards parts only.

My reply was to point out that this is a known issue and that Audi have been repairing their vehicles for free. The dealer claimed that they had not seen such an issue before. I explained that I found that surprising.

We'll see what happens in the next 48hrs.

Brilliant  response from the dealer.

Maybe even Skoda UK have never heard of this.      No No we know nothing.......

  • 1 month later...

Hi All.

I am also a owner of the 1.8 TSI . Mine is at 85000km and still ok.

I am a serious motorhead that do all the mechanics fixing myself on cars and motorcycles. Including service etc.

It seems after some research that the oil scraping ring on the pistons is a very embarrasingly bad design with to small oil holes for returning oil that clogg really easy over time.

Not much one can do probably to prevent except perhaps delay with 10000 km oil changes and use really good oil and use a better car for the short runs.

The massive fix kit from VAG has a redesigned oil ring on the new pistons that seem to work well and cost massive amounts of money since they update a lot of connecting

stuff to latest revision when they do the massive job. 20+ hours. Not one you would want to pay for.

I personally am planning on if needed Installing a kit that fix some other issues with this motor that are not good but do not change not needed stuff. Such kits exist.

That kit costs about 1150£ and about 40+ hours of “interesting” DIY not for the faint of heart. Some special tools, Motor out, empty AC etc seem to be recommended.
I would perhaps consider only to modify original pistons. Perhaps could be done motor in. perhaps 600£ and less hours.
