Amundsen woes after 1 day!

We collected our brand spanking new Yeti on Monday, only to find the Amunsden unit threw a total wobbler the next day.

It basically gets stuck in a freeze and reboot cycle all the time. Sometimes it won't even accept a hard restart from holding down the power button for 10 seconds.

It all started when the SmartLink/Apple CarPlay was initiated. It also means the DAB, reversing camera and front/rear park sensor graphics aren't working.

It's going back in for the day on Monday. By all accounts, they have to reload the SmartLink software onto the head unit. This can apparently take up to 5 hours to complete!

I wonder if they'll load some updated software, or reload the original in case the factory load was borked in some way?

Pretty disappointing on a brand new car after 24 hours of ownership, wouldn't you say?  :|

Absolutely. 5 hrs seems a long time to reinstal the software. Presumably they've got to be given that option, before they then consider replacing the complete Amundsen unit.

Hope they sort it.

The chap at the service desk said they'd had a few with issues and that some load faster than others. Hopefully it's just a bad software install on a batch of them.

Maybe there's a more comprehensive software update/flash/whatever else than the updates we are all familiar with? I'm speculating of course.

You can update all the software and maps at the update.skoda Portal. You'll need yor VIN number and then it sorts out what's available.

Mine needed a 12Gb download the first day I got mine to gets the maps up to speed.

Still struggling with the POI upload for my speed cameras.

It will be interesting to se how you get on, hope it all goes OK.

Can I ask, did you do the update on a supplied sd card or one you supplied yourself.

Looking forward to getting my new yeti and just looking at things I need to do when I get it.

I'm sure you can only do the maps on the supplied card, as the Amundsen II head unit checks the serial number of the SD cards internal controller and matches that to the one it has stored, rejecting the non Skoda card as invalid/unauthorised media and will not load the maps.

I am unsure about other firmware/software as I have never needed to do it yet as mine was up-to-date at delivery, but I would guess that a std SD card would work for the other updates .... maybe someone who has done the updates on a Amundsen II can comment.

This is well beyond a mapping problem. This is a problem the firmware/operating system that runs the whole show. It could be something as stupid as a corrupt smartlink driver, as the problems only started when SWMBO attempted to fire up Apple CarPlay. An iffy software install at the factory could be enough to wreak havoc.

I removed the mapping SD card, disabled Bluetooth, did various factory resets but the locking up and rebooting cycle persists. The low fuel warning light came on and the fuel assist message came up on the screen. It then decided to freeze on at that message for the rest of the journey.

I was tempted to find the appropriate firmware and reload it myself, but the car is less than a week old so why the hell should I?

+1, it has to be the supplied SD which is linked to the particular Head Unit. You'll need to delete the current data, I copied mine onto a folder I set up on my PC in case it all went wrong. The map upadates are released every 6 months so worth while doing an update.

I've found that some of the new roads are very much correct but some of the old ones are not. The speed indications also seem to be off on a number of roads. Things change and I guess it takes time to update. I've not found a way of feeding back incorrect data to Skoda.

did you try a complete reboot? ie taking out fuse 8(i think) in the fuse box under the bonnet - some time ago i had probs with an earlier amundsen, got it rebooted taking out said fuse for 30secs - 1 min!

You can only use the Skoda supplied SD card, as it is coded to the machine. A 3rd party card will be rejected.

Safest way is to back-up the card first, then download the up-dates to the card.

(Must do mine!!)

Yep, I tried pulling the fuse (forgot to mention that) and it went straight back into a reboot cycle again

The smart link installation only takes about 15 minutes to complete so I'm not sure what they're doing for the other 4 3/4 hours!?

I would think if it's a 15 minute  job it'll be for free, if they say it takes 4 hours thats four hours at £xxx per hour, thank you very much...............

It's a "brand, spanking" new Yeti, one day old ! It'll be done under warranty surely ?

TBH, I don't know why it's quoted as taking so long to sort. I've been loading firmware updates onto Skoda head units ever since I retrofitted a Columbus to my 2007 Octavia. It has never taken more than an hour, maybe 90 minutes?

Apart from nosing around in the Columbus and 5F on my Superb, my knowledge of Smartlink enabled units is limited. Is updating them any more complicated than the pre MIB units? Or is there a deeper form of software update of these units that only a dealer's system can perform?

It's basically the same process to install new firmware but you load the data from DVD to sd card then onto the unit. The only part the diag machine is required for is to confirm the update and remove the fault code.

Coding, calibration, parameterisation and component protection all require the use of the diag machine.

Nothing takes 5 hours. Even to install a new unit and code it takes less than an hour.

If it's an Amundsen II then there are two types of updates:-

1. Map updates - DIY from the Skoda update portal onto the supplied Skoda SD card containing the maps.

2. Software/firmware updates - Done by the dealer and not available on the update portal.

FYI:- Mine has been in twice for #2 without success, although others have had it done. I think the time quoted must include download time (several Gb), then apparently the car has to be hooked up to an external power source in case the battery dies half way through updating and corrupts the whole thing - or so I was told. Never the less they failed to do it...

+1,

Updates available for Amundsen infotainment navigation:

  • Bluetooth®
  • Maps
  • Radio station logos
  • MirrorLink®

You can also use the Amundsen infotainment system to access the MyDestinations web application, which lets you generate Special Destinations (vCard), an Image with GPS coordinates (where you can use the navigation) as well as the option of preparing particular points of interest (PPOIS) for putting in your GPS.

Should the PDI ensure the tech systems are operating correctly?.

In fairness to the PDI, the unit worked fine on the drive home, it was only pairing SWMBO's iPhone the next morning that sent it on a wobble.

It's now at the dealership and they've said they'll reload everything and if it doesn't sort it, they'll just replace the entire head unit.

Skoda have to pay Google and Apple for the licensing associated with Android Auto and Carplay apparently.
