rough running and codes displaying

Recommended Posts

Hi guys im alittle sore headed after doing the head gasket on my mpi ive since got it running and now out of the blue have 4 different codes my gas peddle works one minute then goes into limp mode it can run fine for a day then starts miss behaving. My timing chain is rattling like a good one but i dont think this is the cause as i only bought the car about a week ago so i dont know if this is why it was sold in the first place.

The codes are P0342 p0101 p0141 p0107 ive just never came across this type of fault before.

Hopefully you guys can help.

Thanks

Wow, MAF, MAP, Lambda heater and cam position sensor all in one hit.

I'd clear the lot then see what comes back, it does sound like a wiring loom issue due to the intermittent nature though.

No MAF sensor on a 1.4 mpi.

Im starting to wounder if its the wiring loom as its been running fine today it only happens if i hit small puddles or if its raining. I have to admit it is the first skoda ive owned all my previous cars have not came close to being built as well it took me ages to find the diagnostic plug. Still struggling to find the fuse box so maybe thats my next thing to check.

I have found one strange thing on the coolant bottle sensor it looks like its got a plastic splice on one of the wires if would this cause the problem if the wire is not connected properly.

Omg i sound like a newbie infact ive been working on cars since i was 18 im now 28 but looks like im still learning. It must be because its my first german engineered car. Anyway its a 2002 model classic 1.4 mpi. I should of never bought it from the garage round the corner or should i say con artists. First blown head then this electrical problem, timing chain needs doing, clutch slipping, exhaust blown, suspension knocking on front and back i really have been conned and because stupid me paid cash they handed the keys over then locked the door behind me, i rang them up when i got home and they said do you have a receipt i went you never gave me one, they said not our problem. Robbing con-artists

Ok i think ive fixed it. Stupid me forgot to disconnect the battery when i done the headgasket and then forgot all about it so all i can think is the ecu needed resetting. Seems to be driving fine now.

So upto now head seems to be holding well no pressure build up in coolant infact theres no pressure at all even after a long run which i was shocked and no sludge on oil cap or coolant cap. Ive now sorted the sensor problem i think.

So my last problem is timing chain something i dont want to touch so anyone know how much it would cost to replace by a mechanic or if anyone on the forum knows how to do it and fancys helping me out. ???? last time i done a timing belt i done everything by the haynes manual including locking the flywheel and yet when i placed the timing belt back on i blew my hole engine up i promised myself never to touch one again although im sure my ex mate done something to it when i made him a cuppa as im sure i had it all timed up correctly.

Don't worry too much about the timing chain. They always rattle on these engines. A new one will last around another 20,000 miles before it starts doing it again. The reason they rattle is that there is no chain tensioner in the design. As soon as the chain stretches it starts to rattle. Never ever heard of one snapping.

I honistly think it needs replacing its very loud infact to put it into prospective a corsa pulled up next to me and i know they have that distinctive chain rattle my skoda is around 4 times louder. The previous owner ive just recieved the v5 was a woman and if i can go by the oil change that i done i dont think it had been done in years i was like clumps of tar. The chain is starting to get alittle quiter but still if this is normal for the mpi im gob smaked.

How many miles has it done?

The truth is ive noticed the current mot states water leak and you know when you just get that feeling it was the headgasket pressurising the coolant and that was at 74k so to me it looks like the previous owner has drove it for 1000 miles even the coolant was just plain water. Since doing the headgasket no leaks at all. No pressure in the coolant bottle even after a long run so i must of done something right.

Nice job on tidying it up :)

If the noise of the chain bothers you (and I admit they sound seriously annoying) might be best to get it done. I don't use garages so have no idea how much it would be.

Thanks im getting there ive now sorted out the interior light, wired a touch screen stereo the right way the wires were in a mess, ive fixed the central locking, just need to buy a new drivers side mirror as it was ductaped onto the car, a new rear boot lid and its rusty, new drivers side panel, and passengers door as god knows how but the laquor on the hole door is non existent and also a new backbox as the current one ive never seen such a rusty half eaten backbox in my life but as ive already insured the car with a sports exhaust system i might aswell replace it with one then all thats left is the electrical problem. What a bliming lemon cant believe this was sold from a garage as ready to drive away. Total con artists.
