oh s $-!t someone tell me it's not!

Right guys I'm really needing some advice. I'm chuffed but nervous at the same time. I've collected my Octavia vrs tdi today. The drive home was lovely really nice to be back in one i love em! However, the car has a few issues. Airbag light is on which happily will be the easy fix i suspected. It's been a family car so we've got the usual crisps m and m's malteser syndrome that will be sorted tomorrow. The major problem is a suspected slipping clutch however I'm not so sure it's that simple. Gearbox feels lovely changes gear nice and bite point feels about just under half pedal travel. But pressing the accelerator in 5th it revved right up without motion twice then never done it again. Just nipped out again to run an errand no slip. I'm kind of suspecting it might either be needing bled up or a slave cylinder but that might be wishful thinking. Help!!

You've just bought a car with a possible slipping clutch and warning lights on the dash? Where did you get it and was it cheap? Did you know about the problems?

Test the clutch by putting in 4th at 30mph and then put your foot flat on the accelerator. If it's on it's way out it will slip doing that.

Yes i did mate an airbag light. I've bought two vag cars before with the same fault as it's very common. Took a chance i admit but it's a broken wire in the door rubber going to the crash sensor. 10 minute fix hopefully. As for the clutch, no it didn't slip at all on the test drive and i took the car at 5 miles then the same back. So I'm kicking myself a little bit as i know a fair bit. I did get the car cheap and got it 30 miles from me.

Eurocarparts website can be tricky to use and find the correct parts for your car.

If you need any help send me a PM with your registration and I'll send you the correct part numbers back :)

Thanks very much buddy I'll pm you right now. I'll just add here though, i do believe the is a good one. 117k and it drives as good as my Leon and that car only has 55k on the clock. I fixed the airbag light yesterday. The wire had been broken before as you could see where it had been soldered. It's been serviced most of it's life at a BMW main dealer because the owners son was a technician there. I'm just annoyed nothing showed up on the test drive because DMF failure is a common problem on these so i checked for any signs of failure.

I would be checking the external hydraulic circuit first - highly unlikely to get an intermittent clutch slip, unless the pressure plate is "sticky", although that would be highly unusual. It could be a faulty limiter valve in the hydraulic line, it could even be the bleed connection on the end of the line (which have been modified a few times). Try the cheap options first before jumping in on an expensive dmf and clutch, otherwise you could end up with the same problem afterwards and a big bill for no reason

Thanks a lot mate. I'm presuming you mean the plastic slave at the gearbox? Where is the limiter valve? Just took it out before never slipped once!!

Depends a lot on what variety you have, internal or external. If it's an external slave, then quite easy to change, if it's internal, then may as well have the clutch and DMF done while it's apart. A good indication will be the state of the clutch fluid, black and slimy then change the master and the slave, and flush the hydraulic line through as well. The limiter valve is usually somewhere in the line between master and slave, and resembles a silver disc in some cases.

If you have the external cylinder, then the bleed nipple is usually part of that, so no external connector to worry about

There is a DMF guide on here for symptoms etc.

You can get a proper kit from the dealer or GSF that includes the correct DMF and a new clutch plus plates etc.

There are two makes however so make sure you get the correct one.

Also make sure it is the latest design, as the early ones had real problems (I got through 6 DMF changes under warranty, then no problems in 7 years)

Right fellas really appreciate all the help and advice. Checked the fluid, level is ok but it does look quite dark in colour but it does. No leaks in the line so without just changing random parts i can't see how to test. There is a black plastic part half way along sits just behind the bulk head that is probably the limiter valve. But again it looks ok no leaks. As for the slave, the hydraulic line goes to the box then there is a black plastic cylinder with a bleed nipple on it. Again no leaks etc so do i bleed it and see if that improves? Veedubnoodle has gave me the part number i need which includes clutch DMF and an internal slave cylinder which should be changed at the same time. Drove the car again today slipped twice then didn't do it again. Very random!!

Any rattling from the DMF?

This is why I'm so annoyed with myself. I've owned one of these before so know all about DMF issues. I really listened and looked for this and even today the car shows no signs at all of a dmf failure. The test drive was great clutch never slipped once. Only on the way home!!

Mine had no rattling when when the dmf came out it had 1/4 turn before the spring kicked in, ie ****ed.

Airbag light could be a lot of things. Under the drivers seat is a cable, this sometimes gets damaged.

My vrs had an airbag light, garage "fixed" it but within a few hours the light was on again. Ended up needing a new airbag in the seat

Airbag light got sorted yesterday. Scanned for a fault it came back as a crash sensor which i know is in the door. Pulling the rubber boot back i could see the broken wire previously soldered had broken. So, i disconnected battery before sorting that but when i reconnected battery i thought xmas had come early there was that many lights!! They cleared themselves after a short drive so no dash lights at all. As for the DMF it's still p!$^?"g me off i never saw it. No sign at all until after I'd handed over the cash. I still think there is a good car in her though. It's very well specced. Cruise, xenon headlights, reverse sensors, armrest. Wheels need painting mind mirror repeater on passenger side doesn't work. Tyres are fubard!! Stuff like that just a bit of tlc. Dpf funnily enough hasn't been any trouble like someone's taken it off....

Are you sure the clutch pedal is always returning fully, not catching on something e.g carpet

Get some penetrating oil spray and lube the clutch pedal pivot and linkage.

It's funny you mention it as the very first time i noticed it giving some pedal off a roundabout i thought I'd left my foot hovering on the pedal a little. But unfortunately not took my foot away and still does it. It's just starting to go i think which may explain why he sold it. Instead of taking it 5 miles if I'd gone a little further!! Lesson right here. I asked the seller if there was any possible issues he said definately not!! Another lesson for everyone. I'd have still bought it but got it for less.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update. Don't really know whats going on with this car i think its called Christine!! Clutch has now completely stopped slipping. In fact heavy right foot action in various gears for over a week i cannot get the clutch to slip at all. Weird. Rear spring fitted due to it being snapped. Back brakes stripped and freed sticky calipers. Airbag light has returned but now it's a ignitor issue. Drivers side. Is this the block connectors underneath the seat?
