Heated mirrors speed

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

The following pics are taken 4 minutes into my trip this morning.

How fast are those heated mirrors supposed to heat up?

I have a friend with a 2007 3 series and his mirrors had heated up and defogged in like 1 minute.... even faster actually.

Mine are exactly the same. Stone cold when i got to work. So I'll test the wiring today make sure they are getting power. If i need to replace the glass does anyone have a P/N ? Aftermarket ones on ebay seem cheap enough but not sure about quality.

Don't go for the cheap ones from eBay, I bought a pair for my car, and the glass fell off the plastic backing piece after a few weeks. Some of them may great and I may have got a bad supplier, but mine just didn't work for me.

I suppose it comes back to the old adage "Get what you pay for!"  :D

I've had ebay cheapies on my old Fabia and the Civic and they've been fine - you just need to pick carefully...

Can you remember the seller you used? And roughly how much they cost?

I ordered mine from here:

http://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/

It's a german retailer based in Berlin. I will post a response here when I get the part and give it a bit of feedback.

I ordered the most expensive mirror glass I could find because some time ago I had bought from them a cheap headlight assembly for my old Hyundai and the reflectors were s***.... there was no light cutoff.

Proper ones from Skoda are £50 each.

Tested my wires going to the heater elements. The heaters come on only when the switch is turned to the demist position. I had read they only come on when the rear demister is switched on. All is well with the electrics. I've ordered two new mirrors from ebay round about 10 quid each. Not the whole mirror just the glass. If they work ok I'll try post a link up to the seller i used.

Recieved my heated mirrors today and fitted now. All seems ok for now they clipped into the housing no bother. Only difference from the original ones is there isn't any of the metal tabs or guides at the side and bottom. Fit seems ok. The heater elements are working but i have to say they are luke warm at best definitely not hot. This might be normal though as my original ones weren't working when i bought the car so I've had nothing to compare them with. The seller was called Benepits on ebay. Really quick postage. So for now all seems well.

I just took the metal tabs off the original mirrors and fitted them to the new ones.

The backs on the ones I got from eBay where the same as the original ones and had the slots.

Ok. I'll pop one back off tomorrow and take another look. I might have missed it. Just out of interest, how warm are they supposed to get? Just warm or hot.

Assuming you get the metal bits on. They are a bit tricky to get into the slots in the mirror body, if you don't get them right in the mirror tends to jam.

Heat wise I think they only get warmish, not hot.

Got mine today and installed it - Warms up just as fast and just as much as the left OEM mirror.

Quality wise.... not very good... feels like the build is really bad and it's not exactly the same as the OEM.... (brand name: DIEDERICHS)

The plastic parts that are supposed to hold the metal bits in are too small to fit the metals in.... I had to force them in as much as I could... making sure they won't fall out while still fitting in the mirror housing. The bottom plastic bit that is supposed to keep the metal in place is totally missing as you can see...

The mirror hardly fit back in and it looks a little out of place.... The glass itself has some rough edges as if it's freshly cut off a bigger piece and the heating surface is clearly smaller than the OEM (Too bad I broke the OEM glass in half when trying to take it off....I would have rather spent some time trying to fix it first)

Have a look for yourself:

New DIEDERICHS:

Basically it's an OK replacement - works well and it does what its supposed to....only time will tell for how long and how it will last....

That looks ok. At least the slots are there for the metal tabs. The ones i bought had no slots at all. They clip onto the motor mech really well though and they move ok. Heat wise I'm not sure what's going on. I've read various posts saying the mirrors won't heat up if the outside temperature is too high and apart from a few cold freezing mornings it has gone fairly mild for now. So at the moment i can't feel any heat from them.

Yeah - I think I've read that in the book too - Don't take my word for it but if I remember well, they would not work above 10 degrees.

When you say 'the book' is that the owners manual ? I'll have a look.
