OEM L&K Xenon retrofit

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As part of a project car that I'm in the process of planning, I intend to fit the OEM xenons from a Mk1 L&K to a standard halogen-equipped Mk1. This will entail swapping the whole system including level sensors, looms, switch etc.

Has anyone done this?

The reason I ask is just to get a bit of advice in terms of removing the looms etc. I'm more than happy to strip the interior out of the car, take the dashboard out etc to improve access to wiring but would just like to be pre-warned of any sticking points before I begin. I've worked on mk4 platform stuff before and in comparison to the earlier VAG stuff I found that much of the wiring is integrated and not easy to remove in individual looms - instead it's all wrapped up neatly in one or two large bundles that make fault finding and wire removal an unpleasant task!

I actually already have the L&K and in addition will also be fitting the heated leather interior. I'll start a project thread once I begin!

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Tom

Personally I'd say getting the whole self levelling thing working would be a lot more faff than result to be honest.

I have OEM xenons adapted to work off the normal halogen connectors with no self levelling and other than having to aim them manually there's no issues at all.

To remain MOT legal it should have self-levelling & washers :)

Nope - to be MOT legal it should have self levelling & washers that work if fitted.

If they aren't fitted and the beam pattern is ok (just as with halogen) then they are fine.

Converted halogen units will fail because their beam pattern is always hilariously bad and blinding.

The car I'm fitting them to will have headlight washers already installed - I'm aware of the issues around the legality which is partly why I'd like to a complete swap of the system.

The main issue and purpose of this thread is just to get any advice regarding the removal of the loom/s for the Xenons - if anyone has actually done it and if they can offer and helpful advice prior to me taking it on. If not, I'll just do it myself anyway.

Thanks

Tom

What Xenons are you using? This winter has made me realise just how bad my 'normal' lights are.

I'd just like to add to this post to say that I have now completed the OEM Xenon retrofit on a 2001 Octavia 4x4, using as much of the original wiring as possible, original plugs and original level sensors.

All now works as it should with full diagnostics and no issues.  It was pretty straightforward once I'd sussed all of the wiring out and if anyone is interested I will have another retrofit kit as removed from an L&K Octavia for sale in the near future.

Thanks

Tom
