Headlight improvements?

Recommended Posts

The headlight brightness both on dip and mainbeam on my wife's 2014 Rapid Spaceback is quite poor compared to my year older Superb.

Is this a characteristic of the model or are there any recommended improvements such as uprated bulbs?

My '14 Toledo has long-life bulbs as standard - the dips are really dim and the mains and dip beams are too low - even though the dealer says any higher is illegal and they won't adjust them up there!

Lots of threads on here about alternative bulbs - and whether they're easy/hard to fit.

Plenty of options for the h7 (dip) bulbs. I'm happy with the nightbreakers I fitted to my wife's Rapid. Main beam uses an H15 bulb, so that the daylight running filament and the main beam are in the same envelope, it's almost impossible to find an H15 bulb with improved light output. Osram do a 20% increased output bulb but I'm unconvinced there'd be much difference perceived on the road.

Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited for me, although they do have a limited lifespan (a few months).

Appreciable difference in light output and certainly a good deal of improvement on poorly lit roads.

I tend to buy them when Eurocarparts have a sale on - the last 2 sets came in at £12 (pair), although I see they are currently £11.55 on Amazon.

Understand that there is an after market product, cost approx £100, which can be fitted.

Apparently this increases range and clarity of the headlights and the bulbs can be ordered in different shades

Anyone know anything about this?

With the previous Spaceback I put nightbreakers in the dipped beam and adjusted the lights up a turn and a half myself. No one flashed me so obviously the DIY approach didn't blind anyone.

Haven't changed the bulbs on the Toledo but they did get a turn up. Still not great, particularly on dipped but the access to the dipped bulbs on the TDI model is difficult to say the least. Although thankfully the Toledo doesn't use H15 bulbs, having H7's for high beam and separate DRL bulbs.

Although I haven't looked under the bonnet yet - are the Toledo headlamp adjusters easy to get at?
