Rusting rear brake discs

Recommended Posts

With the colder wet weather and mud covered rural roads round here, I've noticed the rear discs on the Toledo were going rusty, as was the case on a number previous Skoda's. However I had a hunch from observations while I had the Spaceback and jet washed the rear calipers; handbrake off  :o

Result was quite a noticeable amount of dirt and grit being washed out and now the brake pads seem to be cleaning up the discs nicely. The rear brakes appear to be prone to collecting road dirt, which is stopping the pads making proper contact with the discs.

Posting in case anyone else is having a similar issue.

A lot of the problem is the pads don't sweep the full disc and the rusting starts on the outer edge and works its way down, if yours were rusting inside this area then its worth checking you dont have tight pistons in the caliper ?

The original equipment are truly terrible quality. I'd noticed they were ridging up and rusting in from the outer edge within 12 months. I replaced them myself with Mintex pads and discs which are not going the same way after 7K miles as we approach the first MoT. On closer inspection the outer edges were delaminating  - shockingly poor quality. The new discs are being swept by the pads and are clear to the edge.

Whilst parked up through winter '15 my rear discs rusted so badly that  the hubs and centres of the alloys are covered with rust stains.

I must thank SWMBO for not driving it from January through April (when she had promised to use it every week).

I was gutted when I saw the condition of the (15 month old) car when I came back in June!

Having said that, the discs cleaned up OK and are still in use now 18 months later.
