Recommended Posts

Hi

The discs and pads will need changing shortly on my 06 petrol vrs.

Whats the current favorites ive heard that the mintex and padgid ones are ok.

Do they low pad warning light at all.

Also how much would i be looking at from a garage to change them.

Thanks

Never had any problems with Pagid pads and the rears have no warning lights. It's a fairly easy DIY job if the have the tools and a hour to spare.

Opinions on brake brands is pretty well debated in a number of threads you can search and review.

Quite a bit comes down to personal opinion because a lot of people stick by one brand and believe it is best.  They may have only used the one brand or only in compassion to one other brand ... and often a long time ago and things can change over time.

I fitted Mintex discs and pads because I've used them in the past successfully and they were a good price.  Discs in particular seem to be consumable items regardless of after market brand or even genuine items these days. Gone is the day where you get the discs skimmed 2 or 3 times before replacing.   My feeling was the life is not that different between aftermarket and genuine.

The Mintex set up certainly stops better than the knackered originals I replaced.

I believe Pagid and Mintex are both made by TMD friction anyway (edit and Textar).  One thing that did annoy me a bit is the disc hub with holes for wheel nuts is not coated at all on the mintex so it rusts as soon as you put them on. I understand the pagids may have a coating, had I known I would of put some primer and silver paint on the hub area or considered the pagids, as it is very visible on 18" neptunes.

Genuine dealer charges £275 each end for replacement. An independant with non genuine parts will be some fraction of that. So maybe £150 an end. It depends totally on the parts you go with and their labour rate.

Pagid are really good as is the coating on them just watch you don't use too strong a wheel cleaner or it'll strip it.

Mintex m1144 pads are meant to be really good but they can squeal quite a bit.

I fitted r32/s3 calipers, discs and pads to mine which are pretty decent just using standard pagid pads, I think the old ones I took off were 286mm or 288mm on the rear (06 vrs tfsi) I now have 310mm on the rear.
