New Octavia tips and tricks

Recommended Posts

Some of this is well known, a lot is in the manual, but it is always asked so to save threads post any useful tips and tricks here.

Remote Window Closure / Opening

When you lock/unlock the car, keep the button pressed on the fob and the window will raise/lower. take finger off button to stop

Windscreen Wiper Access

To get to the wiperblades, after having the ignition on, turn the ignition into the off position and pull down the wiper stalk. The wiper arms will move and stay in the full sweep position for you to clean/change the wipers. Putting the ignition back on and pushing the wiper switch down again sends the wipers back into their park position

Automatic Rear Screen Wipe

With the windscreen wipers on, selecting reverse will cause the rear screen wiper to wipe once.

Headlamp Washers (if fitted)

Headlamp washers only work with the lights on, and performs it's action the firstime you clean the windscreen and then every 5th time the windscreen is cleaned. Turning off the headlamps or ignition resets the counter.

Duel Zone Climattronic Synchronization

After a passenger has played around with their temperature settings, press the AUTO button for 3 seconds to re-sychronise

Coming Home Lights

The headlights only stay on for the 30seconds or so if you have put just taken the key out of the ignition. If you dont want them to stay on when youve parked up then lock the car, unlock and lock again.

(Save that oh too familiar "you've left your lights on mate!")

Duel zone climatronc switching between Celcius and Farenheit

Pressing and holding the Auto and Econ Buttons at the same time will swap the temperature from oC to oF and back again (can also be done on in trhe temperature settings if you have Maxidot.

maxidot

The MFD lights up when you open a door but will go out after about 30 seconds unless you do something. Just press briefly the trip button and the display will light back up.

Three blink indicator

IF you have maxi dot, this can be turned on and off in the options screen under ‘comfort coding’

Duel zone Climatronic settings

Like the previous version there are a ton of settings and information hidden in the climatronic computer.

To get this, press the ECON and the top right air direction button (next to recirc) simultaneously. To get back to temperature control press AUTO and ECON simultaneously

The passenger side temp control dial sets the section (1-30)

The fan speed dial sets the subsection and is shown in the passenger side LCD screen to the right of the main number.

The one that everyone wants is true speed, whis can be found in section 19.

Subsection 0 shows Kmh, subsection 1 shows Mph.

Subsection 3 shows the revs to the nearest 100 (tickover is about 870rpm and shows up as 08 on the display)

A little radio trick

If you hold down the MENU button whilst on FM or AM, until the radio emits a 'beep' the display will then alter to show a signal meter for the station you are listening to and some other useless stuff.

Auto shut off light

IF you forget to turn the lights off when you get out and lock the car, don't worry as the lights will turn themselves off after about 1 minute of the door being locked.

VIN numbers

Hold the info button on the radio and a list of VIN numbers come up.

Climate control recirc

When the car is put into reverse gear, the climnate control goes into recirculation mode to prevent fumes from getting into the cabin.

Low oil light

If you get a low oil level warning and then top up the oil but not by a sufficient amount, the low oil level warning light will go out anyway and stay off for 100 miles before coming on again.

Disabling of motion sensors for leaving window open

there are 2 ways

1) If you are by the car, there is a button in by the 'b' pillar on the drivers side, press that before locking

2) Press lock on the remote twice. This will also disables the deadlocks.

here are all the climate contol settings. Now these have been translated by someone else from Spanish. The translation is not brilliant and where I have been able to, I have made it easier to understand (so most of it has been left alone)

To enter the climate settings, press ECON and the top right button in the middle cluster of 4 buttons.

To change the main channel (large number on passenger side LCD), use the passenger side temp dial. To change the sub channel (the small number to the top right of the main number), use the fan speed dial.

To exit press AUTO and ECO simultaniously.

LED bulbs don't work in the tail lights of the octy as the stop and tail lamps are duty cycled. In the event that a tail lamp fails, the car simply reduces the voltage supplied to a brake light element so it acts like a tail lamp. It also warns you with a lamp failure indicator on the dash.

Reversing lights, front side lights and indicators are not duty cycled but if you want to use leds for these then you need shunt resistors across the lamps to emulate the load of a standard bulb otherwise the lamp failure warning comes on and the supply to the lamp in question is turned off until you present the correct load and turn the ignition off and on again. Some led lamps come with the shunt resistor built-in.

How to adjust fitting position of the main beam:

For those who have one or both beams not perfectly fittied (like I've had):

First, you have to take the beam out by unscrewing one white plastic nut on the back of it (on the top, closer to the center of the front of the car). Then you need to unclip the big hook-clip that is at the front of the beam, area that is covered by hood when closed. You'll se black plastic hook (front, bottom of the beam, closer to the central grill). That hook has a little square tip on it, it looks like a small pedal. Gently lift up that pedal and the hook is free to be pulled towards the center of the car. After the hook doesn't go out more, the beam is free to get out. push it from the inside of the engine compartment. That technique is also used when you need to change any bulb from the beam.

Unplug the cable on the back of the beam.

Now, be very careful not to drop the beam unit or scratch the glass.

Put the beam away.

Now you can see the big black base on the same level as the hook (where bottom of the beam goes). That base has two TORX screws. You'll need torx-25 key to do the adjustment. Screws are close to each side, each one of them. I've done it by unscrewing just one, not completely, just a little bit, so the base on that side moves front-back. If you need to move whole the base left-right then you need to release both screws. Unscrewing one screw is for adjusting each side of the beam in direction front-back, or both screws for moving left-right whole the thing.

If you need to adjust the hight of one side of the beam or hight of whole the beam, you'll see arround each screw one big plastic ring. You have to release the screw and with help of the pin that each ring has, turn the ring. You'll see if you turn one way, the base on that side goes up. The other way it goes down. Attention, if you release the screw just a bit and base needs to go up, by turning the ring it will touch the head of the screw so you'll need to release a bit more.

Whole the work is done by moving tha black base milimiter by milimiter and then putting the beam back to see if it now sits the right way. When checking, put the beam back and just clip the hook whole the way (make sure it's in whole the way). No need to plug the cable and screw the white plastic nut back. After everything is adjusted the way you like, do the last check by putting the beam in, clipping the hook and close the engine hood. Look carefuly and touch all ends of the beam to see if it's on the right place.

If everything is OK, take the beam out, plug the cable, put it back in, clip the hook and screw the white plastic nut.

Job done

And yes, you'll need to adjust the beams pointing after that as it's changed.

Rain Closing

I tried it out on a newer spec vRS than mine....a vRS TDi ;) , works great, this car had a sunroof but I also tried it on a mates one without a sunroof and BOTH worked.

Set it on the Maxi Dot, put all windows & sunroof down, locked car, then poured water over the rain sensor, hey presto the windows and sunroof closed.

So can anyone find out what setting needs to be cahnges in Vag-Com...for us with the original Maxi Dot ?

Its a neat feature.

Hi guys,

With the Light Assist is there anyway of preventing the car from turning the h/lights on if you reach 84mph.

I can't help thinking it could give other drivers the impression you're being an impatient git !

(other than by turning Light Assist off altogether)

One thing I have noticed with the auto rain sensing wipers is that if you have it enabled and just want a quick single wipe then move the sensitivity switch one position and back again.

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but if you have cruise control, there is no need to either brake or de-clutch to switch it off and keep your speed setting.

Simply move the switch over to the right, but not past the 'click' point. Then when you want cruise back on, press the speed up button.

Coming Home Lights

The headlights only stay on for the 30seconds or so if you have put just taken the key out of the ignition. If you dont want them to stay on when youve parked up then lock the car, unlock and lock again.

(Save that oh too familiar "you've left your lights on mate!")

You can also move the light switch, and return to it's original position if you have the auto light feature. Lights will be off when you leave the car, but back on if dark.

Saves wearing the fob battery/lock motors ;)

Was looking to hard wire my Snooper, and investigated where to take a permanent feed from without dismantling the dash. Outcome was that I used a flat spade connector plugged into one of the vacant fuse holders that are only part installed, the one I used was towards rear and top as this one was controlled by ignition key, there are others but not all are key controlled - when using this method a fused link must be used! As the Snooper was to be mounted on top of dash to right it was a simple job to route and hide wiring before fitting fuse cover - much simpler job than expected!

Here's a really weird one I discovered tonight - if you come to a stop and turn off the engine, leaving either of your indicators flashing, when you open the driver's door you'll hear the "boing" noise as if you've left your lights on... in fact you have!

Leaving the indicator stalk "on" enables the sidelights on just that side of the car, as parking lights... why would you ever want just one side?!:rubchin:

i only found that out today on my mk1 octavia vrs...its for when you park your car up and its sticking out onto a road somewhere or parked close to a road or parked in an estate...just so people can see it...and beleive me it does work...

hi guys, i am a new octy user and not aware of thw many functions it has, i came across this option of activating a digitall speedometer, i would like to know how to use this, thanks

Post #1 in this thread tells you how to do this!!

Dual zone Climatronic settings

Post #2 gives you lots of information on other stuff you can do.
