One of the last buses to have the real "Leyland bark" from the exhaust when accelerating. And I lived the right sort of distance from a stop each way, with a total of 10 of them each way per hour, back in the day.

The sound of hard working diesel engines ... .yummy,

All these petrolheads are just wrong!

My S110R is now on the road:

Nice to have it on my own drive!

This is what it looked like 3 years ago:

Looking good, and the bright green suits it.

That is gorgeous! Those wheels suit it really well.

Thanks! The colour is the one the car was originally supplied in, and the wheels are geniune S110R period alloys from Skoda.

Do I have bad taste? because I want one of these.... badly...

Nothing wrong with a bit of Tatra lust!

That particular Tatra 613 always looks one of the best: powerful quad-cam V8, aggressive stance, and a really good (and quick) drive!

I'm never entirely sure whether I prefer the 613, or the older 603. I think it depends what sort of mood I'm in on the day.

603s are generally more "classic" but are still very driveable - mine will cruise all day at 80 - sorry, office, I mean 70), and does not hang about getting up there. Plus you will never drive anything that grabs more attention - at car shows I have had more people looking at my car than various Ferraris, Lamborghinis and "classic" yanks.

Good to see the S110R is back, & it looks gorgeous!!!

Will you be heading to Matlock Bath in it on Sunday?

I've ordered a full stainless system for the Blue Octy,

fabrication & fitting booked for next Friday, will arrange MOT for same day.

cheers... Darren

A bit of blatant thread resurrection here ....

but if you've looked at this thread before,

you'll actually understand what I'm talking about

I'm in Erfurt at the moment & whilst walking about the other day,

I noticed a show condition Routemaster bus sat in the yard of a "back street garage".

Now I have a little unwritten rule that says, always look into garages that have Routemasters parked in the yard, especially if you're not very near London.

So what else did my little visit uncover, an Ikarus bus & a Robur bus both in tidy condition.

Then with "Zu Verkaufen" signs in the windows ...

a Wartburg 311 4 door saloon & a 2 door coupe (me want me want)!

Also listed in the windscreen was a picture of a full Volkspolizei livery 353 with blue lights & a pair of MZ 250 motorbikes to match.

Part of the yard held some scrappers, a pair of 353s (handy for parts if you bought the Polizei one) and a Zapper (see post #6 above)

mit freundlichen Gruessen ... Darren

I'll post some pix when I work out how to use SWMBO's PC, (the internet is plugged into her laptop), whereas the card reader is built-in to the PC.

cheers ... Darren

I applaud the thread revival!

However, I must confess that I don't really understand what you just said... but could you tell me more about the car in No:6? The one that looks a bit like a BMW 1602? ...actually, is that a BMW behind it?

  • Author
No. 6 is a Zaporozhets! Soviet copy of the NSU Prinz which was not uncommon in Sweden when I was a kid. And a Skoda connection - NSU merged with Auto Union in the 60's = AUDI (VAG)

Well firstly I'll quote Swedish skoda, as my book of all things "commie" is back in England. Additionally, I can say SWMBO's ex boyfriend had one back in the old DDR times & it's unreliability was legendary! By contrast Skoda Estelles were regarded as Rolls Royces (unlike the contemporary UK view). The only thing they have in common is a rear engine layout, Skoda opted for water cooling, the Zaporozhets was air-cooled, but had a petrol heater, however, that did cause a few to catch fire!.

I took picture 6 at the NEC classic show in 2007.

The car behind is a Zastava Yugo 311 (built in Yugoslavia), these were imported into the UK & sold in right hand drive. .

I think I need to direct you to flickr (a huge photo sharing site) and search for SALT (Soviet Auto Luxury Tours), also I'd suggest you look up IFA (the parent company of Wartburg & Trabant), as well as all the names used above. Some of the largest commie gatherings in recent years have been at Stanford Hall (until 2007), Crich (Red October event) & Cosford Cold War museum (from 2008) .

We'll soon have you converted from these modern decedant western ways comrade!

I'm sure some of the usual suspects will be along shortly with some more gems

cheers ... Agent Darrenski

Look at post #18, bottom picture grey 4 door saloon in foreground,

that's a Wartburg 311 & the red car on the right is a Zastava Yugo 311.

(At a guess the same one that was at NEC)

This commie era stuff is pretty exclusive now.

I want a Zaporozhets sooooo much! I recently bought the Haynes book 'cars of the Soviet Union' and it is a fascinating read and got me thinking about all the juicy communist era cars I could buy. Ive also met the author in a local garage......turns out he lives about 2 miles away from me!

Oooh, I didn't know about that Haynes book, my book is in German.

Good luck with finding a Zapper, I'm still in single figures for the number that I've seen. Only one of which was in the UK.

This is it -

Cars of the Soviet Union: Amazon.co.uk: Andrew Thompson: Books

as for the Zaz - there was one on ebay a while back, late model (1990s) from Hungary. Think it went for £1500 in the end.

There is a Polish guy where I work and he reckons old Zazs are almost worthless because they have such a bad reputation over there. I challenged him to bring me one back when he went home the next time......I'm still waiting!

Thanks for the link to the book, worth investigating me thinks.

They had the same reputation in DDR too, I've never seen one moving & I'm always looking out for such oddities. SWMBO says that whenever they went anywhere, there has hardly any room for luggage as the front boot was full of spare parts & oil cans!

In contrast, I've been into town today & seen 3 Trabants, still doing exactly the job they were built for!

Do I have bad taste? because I want one of these.... badly...

You have excellent taste mate. There was a guy in the UK who converted a few of these to RHD in the late 90s. I believe his name was Tim Bishop (from an old copy of Top Gear) but sadly the project came to nothing. People stuck to their 5 series BMWs. I would dearly love one of these. Skofast sent me a link to a Tatra dealer in Czech though and they were all up at ridiculous money £35-£40K: Popular with wealthy yanks apparently.

Anyway a great collection of Eastern machinery here. As for the OPs 110 Coupe, what a jewel! I thinkt these are the prettiest little coupes ever made personally:thumbup::thumbup:

I'd suggest a look on Tatra Register UKs site for any cars already in the UK for sale.

Sadly, the S110R isn't mine, I've just got to make do with 3 Octavias, a hatch, a saloon & a combi.

Oh dear. I want a 613 too. Look forward to bidding against you when one appears on E-Bay! Hints as to any for sale at sensible prices welcome ...

I even re-joined Tatra Register UK recently ... suggest you may wish to do the same.

If I can work out how to do it, I'll post a pic of the 130 on an AutoTest from a week ago ... on three wheels ... it's fun competing against the modern cars ...

I'm distinctly non-techie but even I've managed it ...

Firstly open a FREE account with a photo sharing site

(Flickr, Photobucket etc ...)

Second, rename a copy of your picture on your PC

(I just type "web" in front of the existing file number)

I resize mine to 640 x 428 pixels (as it makes them quicker to upload).

Please remember to try to blank out any number plates using a paintbrush type tool,

this is more critical for modern cars that are likely to be cloned,

after all anyone with an Estelle or Rapid is unlikely to be a villian

Thirdly,Upload your edited photo onto your online account.

Fourthly, with two browser windows open, copy & paste the exact picture address into a post. Theres an insert image button that puts IMG tags around the URL.

(URL is the really long gooblelygook internet address, the IMG gubbins means that the forum knows to automatically open the picture)

To quote a popular meerkat "Simples"

cheers ... Darren

My two stroke friend has a few Warties.
