  1. Hi Adam_ Thanks for the post and the 'like' - I'm glad my fix has worked for you too. One month in and my buttons are still attached - looks like it might be permanent, if it proves not, then another tube of silicone is on a few £ ! Cheers Graeme
  2. It's been 10 days since the operation on the Symphony - we've had very hot days, very humid days, very wet days and a few cold nights to test out the fix and I have the following to report : The ersatz vinegar smell given off by the curing disappeared quite quickly after application of the silicone, only lasting ~1 day. The head unit is working completely normally, all the preset buttons [siliconed and 'original'] are operational and are still attached ! I think I can safely say the fix works.
  3. I have seen many posts on this site explaining how the buttons on the front of the Symphony head unit fall off. My Symphony's numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 had all broken the little keeper tags on the back and would fall off just by looking at them. Examining the buttons and head unit, it was clear that the buttons are 'hinged' at the top and push onto two rubbery pads at the bottom. Button illumination is effected by individual leds shining directly onto the middle of the rear side of the button. The fix. I applied a small amount of silicone sealant [used B&Q clear sanitary stuff - cost ~ £2.25] to the top ~1/3 of the inside of the button making sure the silicone did not go outside the edges or over the number. I did this to all 4 'loose' buttons two days ago - after 24 hours of curing, all my buttons stay on the head unit and actuation of the 4 'siliconed' buttons seem to be the same as that of the originally 'captive' buttons 5 and 6. I'll keep you posted as to the longevity of this fix. Cheers Graeme
  4. Thank you for the welcome - I have already added a post detailing my fight with the rear wiper ! I'll add more when I get to them.
  5. Hi Mogwye, The brushes still have enough meat on them to operate the motor. That motor is only used intermittently so I'm hoping will last. Graeme
  6. Hi all, I thought I would relay some hopefully useful information about my recently acquired 1.4TDi Ambient h/b. After purchasing the car and getting it home earlier this week, I did another test of all the functions and then noticed the rear wiper did not move. I checked the fuses - the 10A mini fuse F32 in the 'end of dash' fusebox was blown. The Haynes manual was consulted [the electrical schematics for the rear wiper are incorrect - pins 2 and 3 are swapped] - I then tried injecting 12V and a 'start' signal to the relevant pins - no joy and a lot of sparking. I tried to removed the wiper arm - stuck fast onto the spindle, however it was removed after a lot of swearing and a modicum of hacksawing. Next, to the wiper motor - removing the trim from the inside of the hatch revealed the motor/gearbox assembly. This dropped out remarkably easily, however whilst manhandling it at the end of the washer pipe I noticed a rattling noise. I removed the motor from the motor/gearbox assembly and out dropped two bits of the motor brushes ! I replaced the motor rotor assembly and what was left of the brushes were touching the armature contacts. The motor assembly was bench tested with 12v - it worked ! It was refitted back in the car along with a new fuse 32 [10A] and now all is well. Happy rear wiping Graeme
  7. Hi all Skoda enthusiasts, New 'owner' of a 2005 Fabia Ambient 1.4 TDi - purchased for daughter as it's the cheapest thing to ensure for a 17 year old. Looking forward to a mutually useful knowledge sharing site. Graeme
