  1. The radio/cd player is a SkodaAuto Symphony connected to the cd changer in the boot. I had to put the code in to get the radio back on after I shifted it. The system was ok until I moved it.
  2. Can anyone tell me if the standard Octavia radio / cd changer has separate codes for each part. I moved mine from one car to another and only had a radio code. Now the cd changer is not working.
  3. I did exactly the same to mine and the result is exactly the same. Checked all the pipes for air leaks. Nothing on the forum tells how to correct it. I'm baffled!
  4. The cleaner was the wynns one that you spray into the pipe from the air filter box. I blame this for the runaway as I think it had left a residue in the pipe which got gulped in in one lot! Just to update I fitted a new turbo core which works OK but must be set up wrong. The old one had a broken shaft. Now there is a loud howling noise from the turbo region until it kicks in at around 2000 rpm and it smokes like mad when starting after standing overnight but not once up and running.
  5. Thanks folks, it was the thermostat. Picked one up from Motorcount for about £7 and fitting it to the tdi was dead easy. Interesting what you said micmac about the engine temp. I have been worrying about mine since I noticed the fans were never on when I looked. Got to leaping out when I got back from the shop and having a look. However I still worry a little that although changing the thermostat has stabilised the reading at 90, the hose from the thermostat housing is often still cool when I've done 10 to 20 miles, although it does warm up after a longer journey.
  6. My Octavia 1.9tdi has reached 200,000 miles with very few problems but one ongoing mystery is why the coolant temp on the dash shows it at mid point (normal) for most of the time but occasionally drops back a bit. I'm no expert but I can't see how the engine gets cooler for a bit then heats up again! The coolant sensor has been changed but it still happens. Could it be the thermostat?
  7. I need to change the map sensor on my 53 plate octy 1.9tdi but can't for the life of me see whether the fixings are torx screws or what. Got the headlight out for access but wondering if I may not be able to remove the map sensor. Has anyone else changed theirs?
  8. Thanks Paul. Just ran the missus to the shops about 6 miles. Although a bit reluctant to start it ran great until I stopped at a road end when it just would not rev to pull away. Fiddled with the throttle a bit and suddenly all was well and there was plenty of power again. Same thing happened on the way home. If it was an old fashioned petrol engine you would be fiddling with the choke cos it feels like it's flooding itself. I've not touched the fuel system by the way, just replaced the turbo core. Is it possible I have not got the variable vane actuator lined up right?

  10. Anybody had this problem after fitting a new turbo. Nothing in the Haynes manual to give a clue. I suspect garages would not be too interested as I did the replacement myself, but funds are short so needs must.
  11. No, the engine sounds fine. Starts ok, ticks over ok, turbo feels like it kicks in ok once you're rolling at 30 plus. Just doesn't pull away from a standing start very well as it doesn't rev properly.
  12. Just replaced the turbo & flushed out the intercooler. Had some smoke but it went away after a short run out. The car runs now nicely in higher gears once rolling but is rough in first and second with a reluctance to rev up. Occasionally smokes a little in those gears. Ticks over OK. So I'm wondering what's wrong now, can it be oil in the intercooler still or something more serious. Any advice gratefully received.
  13. Took the pipe off the intercooler (again) to see if oil runs out (again). Yep!
  14. I'm thinking of using wd40 to flush the oil out of my Octavia intercooler following a bust turbo (now replaced). If I spray plenty in the outlet hole will it wash the oil through and what are the problems if any? If anybody has tried it can you say how it went.
  15. Thanks for your advice gents. I'm still not sure where to start. I don't think there Is engine damage because it starts and runs without noise, although it certainly churns out a lot of blue smoke. Before I started to "mend" it the car ran smoothly and economically and I did plenty of miles like that. The engine can't be too bad as it passed the MOT emissions test a few weeks ago. The only problem was loss of power climbing sleep hills, hence the turbo cleaner. Is it possible that the cleaner has damaged the turbo oil seals? I took the pipe off the EGR and it is pretty oily in there too. Why would that be? Trying to avoid buying a new turbo due to cost but concede there will be cash spent somewhere - just need to be sure I spend it right if possible.
