  1. I think I'll just go to the auctions, cut out the middle man. Let's face it, you'd have to be extremely unlucky (2 major component failures) before you'd have spent out the same as buying from a dealer. I'd also buy slightly older so being shafted on dealer servicing won't come in to it either.
  2. Those who believe in and defend the capitalist market, stop reading here, or else contact me to make a payment to recompense me for the work I have put in, should you benefit from it. Those of a more left persuasion, based on the particular car I was looking at, entering the postcode of every uk dealer into the used car finder reveals Harrogate as the cheapest place to purchase a skoda uk car. Useful for negotiation with your local dealer. Unfortunately I haven't been able to benefit from this yet: one wasted 100+ mile journey to see a damaged car; lack of interest from my local dealer, including a missed appointment with no phone call.
  3. Already underway with that approach, but is the cheapest I've found the cheapest price? I'll see what the local dealership comes back with.
  4. Fair enough it's what the local market will stand and charging people more for goods & services in areas of higher wealth is the modern world. Many of the higher prices are in low wealth areas however, let's take more money off of those less able to afford it because they've bought into our 'good value, reliable, we'll look after you' brand. I can't agree with that.
  5. My thoughts exactly. I know its the way of the world but that kind of behaviour puts me off buying. If anyone does want to play along them I'm particularly looking at the 1.8 TSI SE twindoor in black with 18" wheels, reg: DG61CKP, 7681 miles. The cheapest price I've found so far is:£14935. It'd be great if you could pop your own postcode in and post on here what price it comes up with! Alternatively, I might ring Skoda UK on Tues and ask them where the cheapest place to buy the car is .
  6. If a used car is coming from Skoda UK stock, it shows up on the used car locator as at your local dealership. Fair enough as your local dealer can sell it to you and have it delivered. However, the price varies dependent on where in the country you are, not by a bit either, we're talking less than 15k to over 17k for the same car! Not exactly cricket! So the question is, anyone know where the cheapest place in the uk is? I presume this would be the minimum Skoda would be willing to accept and therefore I could just use this figure at my local dealership. Have a look at 61 plate superb 1.8 se s if you want to play!
  7. Hello all, I (might) be back! Long story short: 2003 Octavia 1.8T 4x4 owned from 2004 to 2007, bought standard, sold with Revo 4bar KW coilovers 18's big brakes etc. I enjoyed my time on here, attended a view events, made friends, but ended up swapping the Octavia for a Mondeo tdci. Its in no way exciting, but is nice to drive and has been very reliable (more so than the Skoda!). Another 5 years and 60k miles on (74k total), I'm wondering whether a change is on the cards. I've spotted a nice year old, 13k miles 1.8tsi Octavia II for £11k, the question is do I or don't i??!! What do you reckon? Any insightful comments for me?
  8. House will be a 3 bed detached by the time we have finished, just a bog standard house really. I was only considering a rewire as the whole house needs decorating and it seemed a sensible time. I was expecting £1.5 to 2k, not £4.5k! It doesn't really need doing, it was done in 1970 however its PVC cable which is physcially in good condition and breezed a Mega test when my dad and myself tested it a year ago (he's a retired electrician). Seems like the secret is not to change the consumer unit!! I'm quite capable of doing the work myself but its not easy to do that anymore. Wouldn't Sheffield be a bit of a trip for 'your mate' ?
  9. If so a quick question if i may. We're presently having some building work done, new bathroom, new bedroom, old bathroom split into a toilet and study. My question is how far reaching are the regulations? Is it just the new bits of wiring that have to comply or since we're now altering things, the whole house including existing wiring. A couple of examples: presently the house has a single ring for all the sockets and a single circuit for all the lighting. Will we now be forced to split the circuits? The gas and water pipework is presently not cross bonded, will we be made to get that done? I've been quoted £4.5k for a full rewire and i'm kinda keen to get this down somewhat!
  10. Just normal Shell diesel. Millers didn't suggest Shell, I did. My question was along the lines of: cheap supermarket fuel with Millers x1 or x2 or a quality fuel e.g. Shell with x1 Millers.
  11. Two things which may be of use: 1) this stuff has a 'best before date', iirc 1 year. A 5 litre can may last beyond this on normal mileages. 2) I asked Millers what was best, cheap fuel (supermarket) with single dose of Millers, cheap fuel (supermarket) with double dose of Millers [thereby giving them the opportunity to suggest a route which would lead to them selling twice as much] or Shell diesel with a single dose. They recommended Shell with a single dose.
  12. Lol. 'Not to drastic' for Eddy = 'You're f*^king joking' for most normal people. Nice one though, should be really nice if it works out. Is the motor running OK?
  13. I thought they'd lost interest in helping me out with problems owing to the fact I was out of warranty, maybe they have just gone down hill from a few years ago. For example, I had a coil pack go up in flames so I took it down to them to get it replaced under the 5 year good will warranty. They said it was the connector that had failed causingd damage to the coilpack so they couldn't help! Absolute rubbish. Some time later as part of the same problem I left a non-running car (when hot) with them for a day. When i collected it they said they tried it twice and it started fine both times - well it would, it was stone cold both times. They suggested I replace a relay (which was actually faulty) but when i asked where the relay was, there reply was "under the bonnet somewhere". Yeah, cheers for that.
  14. Morning mate, just sorted my mailbox now. You going out there in all that rain then?
