  1. Had BL03OEU up until today, traded it in with 158000 miles on, still in great condition
  2. OK, it wasn't the starter, it was a gummed up throttle body, which after replacement, and a good clean out fixed the problem. Sorry to have lead people in the wrong direction, but even the guy in the garage thought it was the starter! Many thanks for the help Neil
  3. Just happened to mine, wish I'd read this before I called out the RAC man though lol, I'd thought it was the blooming ring gear on the flywheel, as it was spinning so freely. thanks Neil
  4. Do you think the cambelt has gone? Or do you mean it is like when you change the cambelt you change other stuff at the same time? Will be surprised and equally gutted if it is the cam belt!
  5. In which case, I might try moving the engine round by pushing it in gear and try again, as previous starting hasn't been an issue so I'm guessing not all of the ring gear will be knackered. Will let you know if this works, as I'd rather know what is wrong, so I can plan to get it sorted Thanks for the help
  6. Got the same issue, starter tries to catch for a second, then spins without turning the engine over. Worked fine last night, and then this morning it plays up! Changed the starter today, nice easy job but to no effect, so really interested in hearing what people suggest, as I'm assuming it's something major
  7. I just part exed my 90 tdi with 185000 miles, and I used to tow a car trailer with it. I would guess that it is an adjustment issue, or the cable sticking as I reckon the clutch should be good for 200k
  8. I've got the same thing but my cam belt and fuel filter were recently changed, and it was ok after the change of belt, so I don't think this is the problem. I have also got a hesitation from start up that disappears until i get revs over 2500, and then it is gone for the rest of the journey, unless i switch off and then it's back straight away. I thought it was the maf sensor, so i will try changing that soon
  9. Managed to get it back together last night (mostly). The alternator I was given did not want to go straight in, as the gap between the mountings on the alt were smaller than the distance on the engine, so I had to use a socket and G Clamp to pull the threaded parts through the casting on the alt, after that it went on fine. It took me ages to work out what to do with the belt and tensioner, so another visit to the Briskoda website was called for, which told me that I could move the tensioner with a 19mm spanner, so with a bit of tube on the end of the spanner, and the belt on all the pulleys except the a/c one, which was nearest to me underneath, I pulled the tensioner load off and slipped the belt over the last pulley, no bother. One tip I can give is to protect the radiator when your are getting the alt in place, as the fins will take a bashing if you don't, assuming like me you have removed the o/s fan. If you have the time, it is definitely worth doing the job yourself, given the cost, it is fairly straight forward, just allow plenty of time, and get some thin gloves, as the plastics cut your hands to hell when your spannering the bolts. All I have to do tonight is get the covers back on, and fingers crossed, start it! Hope this helps Neil
  10. I hope this is of some use to somebody, but I have just had my alternator fail on my 160,000 TDI Octavia. I was just pulling on to the carpark at a customers, when there was a clunk (the freewheel pulley had seized and come off!) and the battery light came on, and steering got heavy. Anyway, after much searching to locate a replacement alternator, (they can't get them at Halfords, and Skoda want £270! even recon ones are £170.) I had to remove the old one. The way I did it was to undo the earth lead on the battery first, remove the engine cover, then undo the power steering pump and the bracket which holds the rigid pipe (makes it more moveable) to move it out of the way, undo the tensioner, removing the pulley first (easy job, just 3 x 6mm allen bolts). I pulled the belt out of the way from underneath, having first removed the undertray, and disconnected the alternator wiring. I undid the radiator fan, so it would give me more clearance, and having undone all the bolts for the alternator, was able to squeeze the alternator up through the gap, bending the radiator hose out of the way. This all sounds simple, but as it was trial and error, it took me about an hour. I think you could do it easier by removing the a/c pump and dropping the alt out through the bottom, but I thought it looked trickier to locate the bolts. I am still to put the new one back in, so if I find any problems I will add to this thread Cheers Neil
  11. I had the same fault, it told me the rear wiper fuse had gone Neil
  12. Mine did the same about a year ago, ie front wipers going when not switched on, back wiper starting when front one switched etc. It went away after about a week, and hasn't come back again. Not much help sorry Neil
  13. Mine does this also, I changed the glow plugs to no effect. Mine has 155k miles though, and is currently playing up with it starting in limp mode until I get over 2.5k revs, then it's ok again Neil
  14. Thanks for the post Niall, Even though it was a long time ago, I am going to use the info. I also did a filter change and service and a week later have got some strange behaviour. When I first start the car it has like a revs cieling of 2000 rpm. Once I push through this once the car goes ok, although it is down/up on power intermittently. I was thinking the MAF as the car will still comfortably pull to 90 if I use the revs, so I guees the turbo is ok. I will have a look at the MAF and the hoses and see if that is the problem. 1.9 tdi 90 155000 miles Cheers Neil
  15. I use All Electric in Kings Heath, Birmingham, service is excellent, but sales leave a lot to be desired, totally wrong attitude. Like I said, I definitely trust the guys who do my services Neil
