  1. Thanks for all the help! Will keep and eye on this and see if I'm getting lots of lights.
  2. Hi. Learning about DPFs and regens and Itrying to find out when a rergen happens. Is it at every opportunity? So if I did a long drive every day, would a regen cycle happen every day? Or is it only when it's needed? The car is a 2010 1.6TDI 105 Fabia. My missus only does a short run in in every day (~12 miles a low speeds and revs) so I'm making a point of getting it a longer run every couple of weeks. 9 days ago, I took it on a 250 mile trip and 2 days ago it got another 50 mile spin. But today the DPF light comes on! Another quick run this evening got rid of the light but I can't understand why the light would come on so soon after 2 long runs. Any thoughts?
  3. Thought I'd give people an update. Bad weather ... potholes ... damaged alloy :( ... back on steelies ... mpg back up I've driven just under 1000 miles since the wheels were changed and the trip computer is reading 60.2 mpg versus the low 50's reading when on the solids. I guess it will be interesting to see what happens when I eventually replace the Avons.
  4. Yeah AFAIK OEM wheels will maintain a similar circumference when you go up a size. It looks like it might be down to the rubber I'm using. If it is, then it's a massive difference I'll track the mpg using a brim to brim method in the next few weeks and get an exact figure for the usage.
  5. Yeah, I suppose I'll have to see if there's any impact when I change the tyres but that won't be until around the middle of next year. The avons were on the wheels when I got them so I had no say in choosing a tyre. Would there be a ~12% difference due to the rolling resistance? (+5mpg/51mpg)
  6. If it was the cold weather kicking in then I'd have expected a variation in mpg depending on the conditions on that day/week. Instead it's been a very defined change. It's not the end of the world but it's still a little annoying.
  7. It would be way cheaper to buy all right but the Irish government charges Vehicle Registration Tax on all cars imported into the country (new and used) which brings the price up to a similar level as you would have paid in Ireland!! There's still savings to be made (I've imported all my cars from the uk) but not to the extent that you might think.
  8. Thanks for the replies. Previously there were 16" 205/55's on her with 2x Michelin and 2x Pirrelli tyres. The new tyres are Avons and I've been keeping a good eye on the pressures (35 front, 32 back). The tracking seems fine as well with all wear being even. It really was a step change in mpg, not a gradual change which is why I suspected the new wheels. I suppose the different thread pattern could be causing it but I wouldn't have expected such a big change.
  9. I'd been getting around 57mpg (per the trip computer) since I bought the car however since I changed the wheels about 2 months ago, it has dropped off to around 51. The new wheels are 17" Solids (225/50 I think??). The only reason that I can think of for the change in mpg is the new wheels. Has anyone experienced similar? Cheers.
  10. Are there different nuts required for alloys or can I use the ones from my steel wheels? Just picked up some Solids this morning but they didn't come with nuts. I know on Fords that you have to use different ones as they will rust otherwise. Is that the same for all cars? Cheers.
  11. Thanks Simbo. That makes sense all right as there were the little velcro strips from a car kit in the car when I got it. Cheers
  12. While hoovering the car at the weekend I found an audio plug hanging down from behind the glove box. The cable only extended down about 3-4 inches. I grabbed my MP3 player, plugged it in and sure enough sound came from a speaker in the vicinity. I couldn't figure out where the speaker was. It's in the same area though - somewhere up behind the glove box. I didn't have time to do a lot of investigation. Anyone know what this is? Or what it's for? Cheers.
  13. Thanks guys. Picked up a second hand Passat caliper today so hopefully will be back on the road on Wednesday. Cheers.
  14. Hi. What was supposed to be a relaxing afternoon doing the simple job of changing my rear pads has become a right pain in the a$$. On the rear right, the rubber boot protecting the piston was completely gone and the cyclinder was seized. While using my wind-back tool to push the piston back in, I managed to snap the brake union just at the end of the flexible hose So after much bad language a quick look at the piston shows that I will need a new caliper. It's pretty badly scratched all around and even if I fitted a new boot, I don't think it was extend very smoothly. So finally my question .... will a caliper from a passat/A4 etc fit? The caliper on it is marked with an Audi and a VW symbol so I'm guessing its common across the marques, but can anyone confirm exactly what models should have the same caliper. Also what are peoples thoughts about using a second hand caliper? Thanks.
  15. Going to leave it for now and just keep an eye on it. Hopefully it'll not get worse.
