  1. My 1.8 tsi Octavia 2 needs to go but what engine should I go for to tow my little Eriba Troll (correct name for this Germanic pop top caravan ) 1500 kg all up so any Octavia 3 apart from GreenLine is recommended. No one allows a test drive with a caravan tow ! Unsurprisingly. The easy answer is the biggest engine which is how I got a 160 bhp petrol car that pulls like a train and gives 25 mpg when towing , no one ever got stuck behind me even on the long m5 hill out of Exeter but more mpg is needed and I do drive like a nun . so 1.6 diesel or the 2 litre diesel ? our 80 bhp 1.3 petrol Jimny just tows it but not up hills fast . So is a larger 110 bhp diesel with that diesel low down torque good enough . Any ideas or anicdotes welcome .
  2. Well the master cylinder is fitted without too much of a problem mainly because of the workshop manual information , I would not have guessed a 40mm spacer would allow it to be removed with an anti-clockwise turn and pressure on two lugs at once. Thanks also to MicMac for the ezibleed which worked well as I have no mates to help and the manual recommends it also. The pedal feels a little different (weak) and the clutch bites high up but then we have 140,000 on the clock and it may still need another bleed if I get the energy to take the air box off again . Great help briskoda Thank you.
  3. Thanks MicMac great information I have ordered a new master cylinder and will have a go on Monday keith_the
  4. Tsi 1.8 manual est 2007 140000 miles clutch pedal does not disengage clutch. Pedal goes to floor very easy and stays there.master cylinder a little damp on engine side . Lower dash off pedal nuts undone. question how do I remove metal hydraulic pipe . How does pedal return to position, is it pressure from slave cylinder? any advice about this situation is needed
  5. 2007 Octavia 2 1.8 tsi manual I am not good at finding things in forums so this may have an answers already , I found an excellent piece on the Oct 1 clutch mech. My clutch does not work , the pedal is either up or down and stays in either position with no resistance in between . the master cylinder is a little damp on the engine side .I have taken lower dash off and removed the three nuts . questions how do I undo the hydraulic pipe , the fill tube looks easy . What checks can I do so I only replace what is Brocken
  6. Well thank you all for your time and advice I will have a think tonight . Regards Keith
  7. Was just going to replace a rear wheel bearing on Octavia II est 1.8 tsi 1Z5 (130K miles) when I read this forum about tyres that can cause the rumble. With the wheel off the hub seemed okay. I have had three tyres ruined by pot holes over the winter so now have two new matched Michelins up front with a Pirelli and Firestone at back it rumbled a little .I put the a spare Michelin in place of the Firestone and no rumble. Question is :- is it a fault in the car spoiling the tyres ? Is it a bad tyre mix on a sensitive chassis ? Do I chuck two legal tyres and buy a pair of michelins and keep out of the pot holes ? I am not used to writing in Forums so I maybe have put this in the wrong place , any help will be greatly received . Thanks Keith
  8. The engine looks like the tsi in the pictures on this forum The code from the vehicle sticker is :- JWX 9572 CA 118KW BZB delivered 11/08/2007 As I have been looking I found QG1 now is this the way the car is treated ie type of oil etc or is there a change of hardware or software fitted .I like to service once a year in the warm (based on under 10000 per year at present) and I have been using quite good but not the highest spec parts. Also does it have a dual mass flywheel as I have heard expensive things about these on this Forum. All the best Keith
  9. Hi Thanks for the replies. It is a 2007 elegance tsi estate with 94000.So far a 250 mile trip mostly motorway and then pootling around mostly.Morning run on country roads 8 miles so all on choke. However 40 mpg on a 15 mile trip this afternoon with a couple of overtakes and not looking at the computer until I got there. So I do not know , I may look at the spark plugs this weekend if I can find them ! Cheers Keith
  10. Hi I have just bought a 1.8 tsi and it seems to have a sports car engine in it , coming from a Fabia 1.9 tdi I expected change BUT I get 31 mpg and even when I drive like a nun i can only manage 38.The 6 speed gearbox does not have much difference between 4,5,6 and with such a powerfull engine (160 it says in the friendly manual) gear changes are not needed on A roads. Is there a problem maybe or should I just stop looking at the MPG and enjoy the new VAG power !
  11. Hi I am in the middle of renewing cambelt and was wondering if anyone had not replaced the strecher bolts holding the engine mount .your thoughts please. Keith
  12. Thanks for that I do not use the site much so put it in the wrong place thanks for correcting it.
  13. Hi well I have done research on "you tube" and read a manual (a Golf one I was given) and read the excellent "How To " guide from Scud missile (the best research by far). But I have the car to bits but cannot remove the Aluminium cambelt cover from the engine bay to continue the job , it is the one that has three 16mm hex bolts into the block and three bolts through the top that goes to the mounting. All the bolts out and the engine all flopping around on jack and stands. Can anyone give me clue as to what I have done wrong. Also how can I tell exactly which engine I have it is 1.9 diesel PD 2003.6Y2364 Fabia.EWT 9151 EC 74KW ADT.from the owners schedule and then loads of sets of three digit numbers and letters. Thanks from Keith_the
  14. I get 55-60 on my comute of 30miles on A303 and country roads according to the trip readout. What will increase it ? tyres ? Chips ? or is it all down to driving style keeping the throtle light and the turbo off and crusing at 60mph. Any ideas will be good. Also I changed the oil and paid loads for the oil as the man in the shop said it has to be this but it lasts for 20,000 miles (in a diesel really !!!) I will do the old rub between the fingers test and when it feels gritty I get some new stuff. Look forward to doing a cam belt before not too long (the last one was a Renault Espace which had most of my knukle skin around it in the end). Well had the car a week and impressed so far.
