Lifted the gear (watch out for the washer on top) and moved it anticlockwise about 20/25mm so there where good teeth to engage. Turned it by hand to ensure that the valve wasn't stuck. The gear doesn't have to do a full turn to operate the EGR valve. Hopefully will keep me going until I can source a new gear - there is nothing wrong with the EGR itself, so will avoid me paying
