  2. Our 2yr old daughter has the best manners that she puts even most adults to shame. We havent had to beat it into her, just thank her and remind her to say thanks/sorry etc and we've always spoken to her like an adult - no baby/kid speak. Even if she forgets she'll come back to you and tell you rarely needing prompting. It's not really hard to do, so why are there so many rude kids around?

  3. All of us have our reasons for considering a Yeti and then ordering/buying one with many questions needing answering to inform our decision. We all have different views on things, but a few things have now come to the fore that would be very good for new prospective owners to know BEFORE they order. [Please note: the prices quoted are guideline only since they keep changing and I can't keep updating this - this thread was started in 2010 and some specs have changed in that time, eg. MDI and the door protection foils. The same applies to some of the links. It will help point you the right way and you'll get the gist of my reasoning anyway.] People of varying height have reported that the standard internal rear view mirror is set too low and obscures their vision. This is not the case with cars fitted with rain sensing wipers. Check this when you test drive and tick the rain sensing option if this is not standard with your model (and you feel the standard non-rain sensing wiper mirror is fitted too low). Click here for thread. OR you can just order the "Light assistant" auto headlights option (£65 in the UK) which also has the sensor and higher mirror. Sunroof: This option was deleted in April 2010 but is now available again. If you tick the box for the spare wheel you cannot have an internal bike carrier at the same time unless you remove the whole spare wheel assembly and boot floor as per this thread. Some people have reported stone chips to the side of the vehicle around the front of the rear wheelarches. If you tick the rough road package this area is covered with special protective film. If you regularly do dirt roads (or live in the UK with our current pitted roads!) consider ticking this option. Or order the film from Skoda: Part numbers: 5L0 807 905 B (Protective foil left) 5L0 807 906 B (Protective foil right) EDIT: as of week 45 build 2010 this will be standard on all Yetis. Snowchains. If you must use them check the Yeti manual first before ordering as Yetis and snowchains have issues. Most people suggest winter tyres are a better option. You cannot get MDI as an option in the UK - this is a connector to connect iPods and iPhones to the car's radio via an Apple 30pin connector (also charging the device and giving full functionality through the radio/steering wheel controls). It might be retro fitted later. You cannot get the timber wood finish instead of the silver finish on the dashboard in the UK fitted from factory. You can however retro-fit it. See this thread. You cannot get an electrically adjustable driver's seat in the UK. EDIT: as of September 2010 these are now available as an option. A Jumbo Box is just a central armrest (also cooled by the aircon) with a 3,5mm audio jack inside. Think about your sat-nav cables and other powered devices and how you will route their cables since the Yeti's power socket sits under the handbrake and not on the dashboard as with some other cars. The spare wheel is called a "spacesaver" but is NOT a narrow spacesaver. It is just a standard wheel but slightly smaller than the other wheels but due to that has a speed restriction on it (on higher spec models). On some of the lower spec models the spare and the other wheels are the same with no speed restriction. You cannot order the Alcantara finish on the Elegance trim level in the UK even though on the SE the cost of leather and Alcantara is exactly the same (and leather is standard on the Elegance). Locking wheel nuts are shown in the UK options list for all models but they are in fact standard for most models. The UK brochure does not explain the Columbus sat nav radio's features very well. It has an internal hard drive to which you can permanently copy your music collection via the SD card. The double sunvisors shown in the manual are not fitted to UK Yetis and is not available as an option. The Yeti manual shows a roll up fabric dog guard requiring special factory fitted hooks fitted to the car's ceiling to fit it either behind the front or rear seats. It is unknown how you order this and as such it is impossible to order (in the UK). Click here for thread. The UK Yeti brochure and website does not show the colours very well. This thread shows all the latest colours very well. Here is a link with good pictures of the colours (scroll down a bit first after clicking on link). Or here on the Skoda world website. And here is another link to good Yeti pictures and this one. Click on the 1600x1200 versions. You can download the latest Yeti owner's manual here. You can also find the owner's manuals to all the radios there too. The Yeti exterior rear view mirrors can't electrically fold. Edit: as of sometime in the middle of 2011 all Elegance spec Yeti's now get electrically folding mirrors as standard regardless of you ordering the electric seat or not. If you have a low garage you can fit a shorter stubby aerial. Various ones will fit. See thread here and here and you can buy them from eBay. The spare wheel is a £85 option. If you decide to have a spare later all the bits for it will cost you over £250 from the dealer. Skoda Assist will cover you via the RAC for three years if you get a puncture but be mindful that their small print won't cover you from year 3 if you don't have an actual spare wheel. See post 18 in this thread. Tunnel lights are just Skoda speak for automatic lights. In other words you leave the light switch in the Auto setting and the light sensor in the mirror will be used to decide when it is dark enough to switch the lights on automatically - i.e. when you drive into a tunnel. The price difference between the Elegance and the SE is circa £2,035. Thus adding leather and perhaps one more option to an SE means it is not worth going for the SE and you may as well just get the Elegance (with standard leather seats) as chances are the other options you are picking are standard Elegance features anyway - e.g. cornering foglights or Bi-Xenon headlights. This might help explain why over 50% of all Yetis are Elegance spec. You can fully retro-fit a towbar, right down to the "factory prep" and the access hatch for the removable tow bar in the bumper. Cost vary from about £280 for a non removable towbar with old fashioned (and ugly) external twin sockets to about £700 for the removable Westfalia version. Remember to get your dealer to do a software update on the car as well, since part of the factory towbar prep is to tell the car's computer what to do if you connect something to the system - eg. to switch off the reversing sensors, change the ESP settings and show a trailer on the radio display. This costs circa £50. If you don't do this the reversing sensors will constantly beep when you select reverse (if you have reversing sensors). There are numerous anomalies in the Yeti brochure. If it is confusing you, then have a look at some of these I listed in this thread regarding the August 2010 brochure. Later brochures are a tiny bit better but don't believe everything they say! The standard Yeti seats have height adjustment but this adjust the height of the entire seat base up and down. If you want to alter the pitch of the seat and have the front higher than the back for example, you need to consider the Electric driver's seat with memory function. This allows for the front and back to be adjusted independently via these switches. The round switch is for the electric lumbar control which can be moved up and down as well as in and out. The Yeti diesels come with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). A very green bit of kit but it does put some limitations on your driving style and does not like lots of short trips. Skoda has released some guidance on its use and this can be found in this thread. Thus you might have to think about TDI vs Petrol if your driving style and/or typical trips won't suit a DPF. Some people have started to notice that the Halogen lights are not that good since the Yeti uses one bulb to do both dipped and main beam (so it can do either or but not both at once as most cars do on main beam) - see this thread. So if you live in an area where you need decent lights consider getting the Xenon lights as an option or get the Elegance spec on which they are standard. On models below Elegance you can add the sunglass holder above the rearview mirror for very little cost. See this thread. Edit: changed point 14 as you can't copy music by inserting CDs one by one. Edit: added the Auto lights option to point 1. Edit: added point 21. Edit: added point 22. Edit: Fixed broken link in point 18. Also see this thread for manuals for older Yetis. 4. One night browsing eBay, I stumbled upon some bargain priced matte black vinyl so I thought why not give it a go? It can't be THAT hard. Here's what became of it... I started with the wing mirrors: Then the bonnet: Things became a bit more involved as I decided to tackle the front end. Before applying the vinyl, the car was thoroughly washed, clay barred, and wiped down with some white spirit to remove any contaminants and dust. I also used a mop to lightly wet the floor, this traps any dust to the floor reducing the risk of dust on to the adhesive. At this point I was really happy with how it was coming along, so I thought I'd better carry on. The door handles were removed, as were the wing mirrors and door bump strips. Again the car was cleaned, and with the help of a mate we began to tackle the sides of the car: At this point it had probably taken roughly 4 solid days as I'd done most of the work on my own until attempting the sides. After trimming all the excess and sealing the edges, this is how the car stands now. I still have the door handles, door bump strips and rear spoiler to wrap and put on, but that will be done within the next few days. More pics to come when I'm 100% finished. Thanks for reading!

  7. I can't believe some of you are saying that investing in your own Pension scheme, is deemed as tax avoidance, it's tax efficient. Besides the pension will be invested and in a number of years time you will be paying more tax, as your Pension scheme should have grown. So it is a kind of investment for the Taxman as well. There are plenty outright tax avoidance scams out there that you should be whinging about.

  8. Just to get it straight its a custom version of fedora, not the same as would be required for a x86 box as the requirements above say. Plus, it has HDMI so no display required.. and a massive SD card is less than a tenner. Im going to get one of these as the potential of them is massive. Theres already a development build of XBMC in existence, and using the HW decoding features of the CPU will mean 1080p streaming quite easily. Think of it as a very very cheap yet more powerful AppleTV2

  11. I see loads of kids who lack discipline as I work in a small rugby shop. I would never dream of acting like some do. Both me and my brother have always been polite and brought up to know the difference between right and wrong. We have been smacked in the past but it was a last resort and always worked. My baby cousin is now 2 and she's well behaved most of the time, very bright and sharp and is perfectly polite when playing with others. She does however take no nonsense from people either and she's incredibly forward and strong willed with people even though she's only 2. Nothing gets past her. Both her parents have never been short of confidence so it's rubbed off on her. If she does wrong she's told and if she does have a strop she's sent to bed or stopped from doing what she wants. Discipline is easy and it's amazing how many parents don't get it. If and when I have kids I will be doing the same.

  12. Now that Mr.Hazelwood is on the case things seem to be moving along a little better for some reason. I'm now dealing with the Customer Services Manager who has passed the youtube link and details of the case onto the technical dept. She has just called today to organize taking my car into another local dealer (Henry's) this Friday. They will then have our car for several days and we'll see how they get on trying to fault find this issue. The customer services manager has already said that if it were their car they would not be happy with the issues seen on the video and would want it resolved asap. Thanks again Johann! Oh and I also received a letter from Mr. hazelwood the other day to say that he had received my email and was sorry to hear about my complaint and that he had forwarded it onto the customer services dept.

  20. Hi there I am Stuart and i am the Regional Orginiser for Astra Owners Club (scottish region) I would like to personally appologise to your club for the actions and behaviour of some of our members on Sunday while at our monthly meet. I personally was not there although it has been brought to my attention that "said individuals" we acting like stupid little children, playing loud music and reving there cars. I would like to take this opertunity to point out that this is NOT the normal conduct of AOC meets nor do we accept that type of behaviour at any event or meet arranged by AOC. Once again sorry for there actions. The people involved are being located and action will be taken to prevent this for happening again. Cheers stu

  21. I used to really hate the fact i had only 16gb on my iPhone, and was always shuffling music. I then spent some time looking at my stats on itunes, and found 90% of the music i owned, i never listened to, or skipped straight through. Since then, i've been more effective managing my music collection, and very rarely get above 4gb of music on my phone. To be honest, i wished i'd learnt that lesson, before getting a 16gb iPhone over an 8GB, or before upgrading the drives in my PS3 or NAS, both of which have 100s of GBs of content i'll probably never listen to. And thus money i've wasted upgrading HDDs.

  28. 1.2TSi Manual - 30,000 miles Very best from one tank was 51.8mpg (real, not from in-car display, filled up at same pump on same forecourt from start to finish). To get this was like some kind of Top Gear challenge! I changed up gear just before the dashboard indicator every time (unless there was a hill looming), judged traffic lights like some kind of computer geek and had to read the road ahead for about 2 miles for the slightest source of delay. It was achieved on mixed roads from single track country to town driving. Interesting thing is this though - I did the challenge identically twice except for: On the first occasion going down hill I stayed in gear as normal. The second time I dipped the clutch on descents (where safe - don't tell my Advanced driving instructor!). Now, car expert nowadays (such as Quinten Wilson et. al.) say it uses less fuel to stay in gear on a modern car (as the fuel pump is cut off when coasting) but I found I got 1.9mpg more by dipping the clutch. I can only imagine that by doing so allows the car to roll more freely and thus travel further instead of being inhibited or held-back by the gearbox. Anyway, I'm bored of this game now and will next see how low an mpg I can get. That will be a true Top Gear challenge! Apologies to the drivers of Nairnshire that got held up behind me last week (but just think of the fuel I saved you!).

  32. But i am coming from a bias view here, i have no intention to have children, ever. They are just not for me, yes im only young and maybe ill change my mind one day but there are people the same age as me that have two kids, im just like, what a waste of your life! Dont get me wrong children are little rays of sunshine to the parent but there are alot more things on offer before parenthood comes along. Some of my friends (mainly females obviously) actually see it as a goal to settle down, get married and have kids, that to me is something to do when you have ran out of other things to do. Im too greedy to have children yet, for example i will happily spend (and want) to spend 5 hours cleaning my car, i cant do that if i have a child. I want to see some of the world, im not loaded so only 'some' will do, want spend all my disposable money on my car and myself, not a snotty little kid.

  34. Sporky - enjoy your XF (I take it you are going for the 3.0d V6). Mine is my 3rd Jaguar (after two X-Types) and after 160,000 miles, I have found overall quality and reliability to be better than my experience of both BMW and VW Group products (including the Yeti). The one big problem I have had was the dreaded intermittent "Restricted Performance" warning which now, thankfully, seems to have been sorted. From what I can gather, few manufacturers have avoided some kind of problems when extracting this sort of performance and economy from an engine. Like the Yeti, I think the XF really excels on fast A- and B-roads where the harshly-suspended Germans start to get very untidy. I was very disappointed with the C-Class in just about every respect, it seems you are expected (as with the new 3-and 5-Series) to fork out an extra £2/3000 for their "dynamic suspension" packages (money you won't get back at trade-in). As for the UI, I agree the touchscreen is slow, but I find locating minor controls such as defrost/screen heating much easier than on the Yeti. And I've never had any reliability problems with the "toys". I hope you are getting HID lights - the pre-facelift standard halogens are useless and even my optional HIDs are not as good as the Yeti. Residuals - I have been pleasantly surprised with what I was offered on both X-Types, even with 30k/yr on the clock. I did look at trading the XF for a Superb TFSI Combi now that I am not doing 110 miles a day and could use something more practical - but even as a straight swap for the 2-year-old XF I would have ended up worse off after 3 years. The Superb is still a very impressive car though and I would have one over a C-Class any day. Oh, and I think the Evoque looks OK but it is way, way overpriced for a 4-cylinder smallish SUV. Mark

  35. Personally I think the drink drive limit should be zero, as it is in Australia. There should also be random check points all year round and not just at Christmas. The law is already in place so the police should use it. If you drink you do not drive. Simples. We have had the current limit for too long and it is about time it is reduced to nil. As with the current system, if you fail the roadside test you should be arrested, taken to a police station which takes time. If you have had that one shandy and you were just over for the roadside test, chances are you will pass the alcometer test as the alcohol level would have dropped below the limit. This builds in a small margin to cater for those circumstances. Oh and bloody well done for reporting him. If only more people did so.

  37. Oh, please, don't get me started. The one thing I can't stand is misbehaving children, as the previous posts have said, the parents have no control over their kids. Discipline doesn't come in to their vocabulary. I work in a hospital, and the kids run about screaming and have no respect to the fact that we deal with sick people, many of whom are very elderly, and unsure on their feet. The parents just let them do it and say nothing, but I do say something to the kids and give them one of my looks and then they sit down quietly, which is as it should be. The parents don"t like it when you tell them. It shouldn't be down to me to reprimand them, the parents should realise it is a hospital not a playground. When I was a child, I was told to sit quietly and play, and respect others, and woe betide me if I put a foot out of place. I realise children need to play but there is a time and a place. Thank God I don't have any, they wouldn't last 5 minutes.

  38. I`v almost started threads similar to this myself before now. At work, the amount of parents that get on and just let their kid run off to the back of the bus and climb about like its a frigging jungle gym. I`d say on a near daily basis I have to stop and ask them to control the child. Most of the time the mum/dad sheepishly goes and sorts the little **** out so they know its wrong, but every now and then they`ll assume having your child do what they want is fine. Once I had a woman get on with her child sat in the buggy, I carried on driving and the bell went off, pulled into the stop and no one got off. The woman said "sorry it was my child". Carried on to the next stop, the kid rang the bell again, I told the woman if it carried on she`d have to get off, she said "he wont stop it what can I do?" I explained to her its not my place to discipline her child but I dont have the time to stop at every stop for no reason, or the patients to listen to the bell running constantly. So we drove off, the bell never rang again, but the kid SCREAMED the whole way to the city, she offered it maccy D`s, sweets, toys when all he needed was a good dose of discipline.

  44. Limit points can be tricky and a bit deceptive on a race circuit where 9 times out of 10 you can see over the corner as well as into it. It takes discipline to stop doing that and just look straight ahead. That said once you know the circuit you will be going far faster than under road conditions where the limit point is limiting your vision, and therefore safety. I don't have a good answer for the OP. A good maxim is Sir Jacky's - you may remember from the TG episode where he taught James May to drive Oulton Park (a pretty difficult circuit to start with). "Never put the poor doon until you can be sure you won't have to take it off again" - or translated into an even older maxim - "slow in, fast out". You want a turn in point that finds the ideal late apex and slingshots you out of a corner. Sometimes that can be translated as "wait to turn in until you can see the exit", but it doesn't work with very long curves or ones that tighten part way round. It also ignores, as others have posted, the necessity to link corners together. If you can find a plan of the circuit, usually the line that works is the one that turns each corner, or combination of corners, into the widest arcs possible, so try to use the whole width of the track. Of course sometimes adverse camber and poor bits of surface will mess with that.

  46. I would be surprised if you noticed any difference at all but it might depend on how long you spend in the car. To fully appreciate the effect of winter tyres on a stationary car you probably need to spend some time at it. You might try different tyre pressures too.

  47. i had a puncture two days ago - five days before getting 4 new tyres fitted to my 170 4*4 which is 18000 miles up on Dunlop SP1s. I have no spare tyre, because I didn't want one. I dug out the gunk, and the air pump, and within 10 minutes I was up up and away, with only my thumb and forefinger getting dirty as I took off the cap, and then replaced it. I tell you - I never ever want to return to getting cold and grubby as I crank up the jack, heave on the brace to screw off reluctant, farm collie piddled upon nuts, and man-handle a filthy heavy dung-encrusted tyre into the boot where the spare had recently been relaxing. Squirting the stuff in the hole, and five minutes of electric pumping, and I was away. And my boot has more space.
