  1. I hate to revive such a tragic thread but it is not without good reason. After 3 months (of completely forgetting) I have been in touch with Andrew's family about making a dontation in Andrew's memory with the money collected from the sales of the 2012 Briskoda calendar . Some of you may know, but it was news to me, that Andrew passed away suddenly due to an a undiagnosed heart condition; of which he had displayed absolutely no symptoms whatsoever. With this in mind the family have requested that the money be donated to 'CRY' (Cardiac Risk in the Young) http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/ They actively campaign for the governments of the day to introduce routine heart screening of the young, to try and reduce the 12 a week (average) sudden deaths in the UK. The donation has been made via the website and I am sure that the £100 raised will be put to good use. Another act that the Briskoda community can be very proud of

  2. Where's this 200Kg loss info come from anyway? A credible source? On the issue of stock power, the previous generation Astra VXR was a prime example of power not being the answer to everything. Yes it had 237bhp... it was just quite difficult to use it, and it had to be dry and in a straight line! From VW's point of view, the GTi having that level of power is quite sensible and allows for other offerings to be fitted into the line-up, Mk7 R and also more powerful 'special editions' (like the Mk5 Edition 30 and Mk6 Edition 35). They're not going to come out with the GTi gunning for the top-end of the 'hot hatch' market straight away, as it would leave them with nowhere to go as the Mk7 develops.

  4. I was left feeling hollow and cheated to be honest It's pretty clear that the hierarchy at Ferrari decided to pull rank on Sauber and 'arrange' for Perez to mysteriously go wide on a corner when he wasn't even close enough to Alonso to attempt an overtake I wonder how that could have happened, except maybe cross-team orders He'd driven a perfect race up until then, and I don't accept it was just a lapse of concentration That's the sort of thing that puts me right off F1 - the best man on the day should win the race, not have to buckle to political pressures Just my slant on things :wall:

  5. Renting??, buying??, renting??, buying??, as long as you've a roof over your head does it really matter?, both have pros and both have cons, Padrino I'd guess that with your flat you're either single or with no young family in tow?, in this instance renting works for you. Jrw you mentioned 112k which in the Midlands I'd guess will buy a 2 or 3 bed house so you're requirements are different so buying works for you. In the loooooong term buying is the more sensible option as long as you class your home as a home rather than a financial product.

  6. Nope, makes no sense to me either Matt... Meh. I'm happy with my mortgage. Rents have gone no where but up around here. At least I can call my home mine*. * Yes, yes, I know it's the banks, technically. But a rented house will never be your home.

  9. I've lost the plot here i'm afraid..... HOW IS RENTING BETTER FOR YOU FINANCIALLY THAN BUYING? Can someone please just answer this question. Please base the answer on most first time buyers scenario: 25 years old with £15k in the bank. Purchase property - House at £125k at £520 a month for 25 years. Rental Property - £600 PCM Thank you.

  12. Me and the Mrs are currently saving for a gaf. Seems very simple to us, pay £600 a month rent and have nothing to show for it in xx years, or pay £600 a month mortgage and have a house in xx years. Our situation is a little different, but this is essentially what it comes down to.

  13. Having seen 1st word, & other threads of this type, I saw this & thought it would add some fun . No post on this thread can have any obvious connection to the ones before it. No quoting of other posts; no responding directly to others, no conversations. This is a thread of completely disconnected blurts. Who wants to start.

  17. Seconded! After a few teething troubles getting it to play nicely with my Samsung Galaxy SII (Android 4.0.3), it now works flawlessly. Particularly impressed with the transparent synchronization of phonebooks and the fact you can configure it as a Bluetooth PAN so that laptops etc. in the car can connect to the internet (though not at the same time as audio streaming over bluetooth) . It's a very cool piece of kit. m.

  18. It's definitely worth it! My GF got me to skip it due to the added cost when we ordered - but driving around without it made me almost crazy ... So I had to get an aftermarket upgrade for my Columbus which set me back almost 600 Euros (for unit + install), and they couldn't even integrate the microphone (because the "microphone spot" was already occupied by the mic for the SATNAV, and they couldn't use that same microphone for the aftermarket Bluethooth-module ... Anyway, now it works splendidly and I would not be without it!

  19. Love it! Slightly biased though!! However, being a 61 plate it shouldn't have scratches??? Mine is immaculate on an 11 plate, I always thought having a new car meant looking after it lol As mentioned above 300 miles - £60/£70 on v-power is the norm. Should have paid £15,000 or so? My dealer just sold a 60 plate vRS Estate for £15,000 no options and 10k miles.

  21. I've got two phones assigned to mine - my work phone and the wife's. It always defaults to hers when I start the car up though I've not looked into why or if I can change the order. Edit: forgot to mention that mine's the Elegance and was an ex-dealer model so not sure if it came as standard or they had it fitted at order.

  22. The current version does everything the old outdated GSM II module does and more, sounds like the dealer does not understand what the current GSM III setup is capable of. The GSM II module is UHV only, does not support Bluetooth Audio streaming and provides limited functionality with most mobiles, unlike the GSM III UHV+RSAP model which does bluetooth audio streaming, supports RSAP if your phone supports it, and more.

  25. Could be low pressure caused by lack of use allowing some of the gas to escape through joints that have gone dry. The owners manual states that the AC should be run, even if only for short periods once every few weeks to circulate the lubricating oil to stop the joints going dry.

  32. Yes Bab's, someone has to own it, but in much of Europe that is property companies and pension funds. We've been home owners since 1976, and have been lucky in that we have either bought before a boom, or have moved to cheaper areas. Also the death of parents has enabled us to buy bigger/more expensive. S yes at the age of 50 we were mortgage free. And what has that given us? Not a lot, other than no worries and the ability to enjoy a good life. Now we are selling up. Our house and business is on the market, but we aren't going to make a grand profit because property prices on what we want are the same as what we are selling. The only people who are going to "profit" from our property are our children, if they are lucky, when we die. Other than the house we are going to spend everything we have. I shall proudly have the sticker "Spending the kids inheritance" displayed! We have actually considered renting. Around here it is cheap and there aren't the worries about repairs to 200 year properties and their increased insurance premiums to consider. Anyone want a 4 bedroomed, 2 bath, 3 recept, with commercial premises? A snip at £190k.

  39. OK, the flip side of the coin: Firstly and mostly, Why would i ever need to have access to £100k in cash in 3-5days besides to buy a house? Besides which, if needed i could access that kind of money. I choose not to pay my mortgage off as i am paying 2.5% interest whereas on deposit savings i can get over 3%, more in my stocks and shares investments and ISA's. If i were to sell my house today based on a recent valuation (I am actually looking to sell this year) I would come away with £20-25k of which i put £12k deposit down when we purchased. This is over 5 years. Over 5 years of renting at say £700 a month (which is what i could get rent for mine if i were to rent out), what would you have to show? Thats right, you would have -£42k. So, as i say, i simply can't see the point. It is dead money. There is no point in being 'cash rich' but renting. A house is pretty much the only thing you can buy that is (or at least was) an appreciating asset. As for a retirement fund, yes, to many it is. Say you buy a 5 bed house in 1990 for say £60k, raise a family and then they grow up, leave, start a family etc.....you then have a 5 bed house for 1 or 2 people which is now worth around £300k (sorry about amounts, just going off what i have been looking at and what parents paid for their house etc). So you will have potentially £150-£200k to play with from downsizing if you so wish.......Do the same calulation for renting with £100k stashed in the bank......Its not going to give you £200k worth of interest unless you have been very lucky on the stock market. Also my best mates mum has played the housing market of the years and is now living on her own in a 4 bed house and is currently looking to downsize, is mortgage free and is going to buy a 2nd property to rent out. I can understand renting if it is only short term or you can't get a mortgage, or your financial position does not allow, but long term is a big no from me.

  43. What's more dangerous to non car squishy things: 1) someone doing 90mph on a straight open motorway in good conditions 2) someone doing 40mph in an urban built up area. Sorry but I get ****ed off with idiots (yes idiots) who drive every where at 40 mph flashing and shouting if you dare to do a safe overtake on them in a NSL but then they proceed to stay at 40mph in the 30 zones. Muppets. Most unsafe drivers as far as I'm concerned (apart from joyriding tools) are those that drive literally zoned out, the act of driving is the last thing on their mind, whether it's mummies on the school run or old grandads in ancient rovers or people asleep on the 9-5 commute. Speed doesn't kill, incompetent muppets driving into people kill, regardless of velocity.

  47. well my fiat grande punto sporting, replaced my fabia I vRS, and was was faultless (WAY more reliable than the fabia it replaced) I mapped it at 4,000 miles, and sold it at 110,000 miles, and it NEVER let me down... it was cheaper than the fabia, just as fast, handled better, and was better equipped.... so I would have to say they did a better job than skoda had.... you must have had a bad experiance, but look at some of the people on here taking their vRS's back to skoda... check out my thread with the 30% of new vRS's having faults that cause them to be unusable (it would be way more if I included smaller things that didnt effect the cars ability to be used as a car) my fiat never needed anything doing to it, that wasn't normal wear and tear (brake pads ect) and it still drove "as new" when I sold it, without any faults at all. I would definatly buy fiat again, I went away from skoda (after a new gearbox and a million other faults I wont bore you with here) when they refused point blank to replace the suspension bushes under warrenty on the vrs after they failed (the infamouse console bushes) at 60,000 miles while still under the 2 year unlimited mileage warrenty....skoda later released a "revised" part after being forced to admit they were not fit for purpose... I still got nothing but fobbed off, saying it was "normal wear and tear" ... when buying the fiat, I explained the crap customer service and warrenty issues to the manager, who promptly rang fiats warrenty department, and put it on speaker phone and said "hyperthetical situation, drivivng instructor , whos car has 60k on it, still under the unlimited mileage warrenty, front suspension bushes failed, would you replace them.... ? they replied "Of course we would. its under warrenty and they have failed, there woould be no question of them not being replaced...." and you know what? of course it didnt need any suspension bushes at all during its 110,000 miles with me, not even a knock or creak...
