  3. I've refrained from posting thus far, but have to disagree with this statement, as much as I disagree with statements that all bikers have a death wish and mis-behave on the road. The simple facts as I see them. Biker clearly had contempt for the rules of the road. Car driver for whatever reason didn't see the biker. Were the lights working on the bike, was the driver blinded by low sunlight? I suspect we'll never know. The end result, sadly, is one dead biker, and a convicted driver with a 'life sentence' all of their own. The principle here for me is about further education for both bikers and drivers beyond the regular respective tests. IAM, RosPA and the like work very hard to educate and enlighten both camps. Things on both sides of the fence will only improve with training, tolerance and a mindset change. JMTPW

  4. I have a "No Thanks" poster in my front window. I had a near neighbour at the door abusing me for displaying it and asking(telling) me to take it down. I refused. Next morning someone had covered my window with black paint. Just shows the sort of scum we are dealing with.

  5. It should, but that's a modern one with a derailleur gear mechanism rather than the old 3 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear. That and the saddle used to be a single piece design with the backrest moulded in, not separate. I'll get my coat, it's an anorak

  7. Playing the blame game just doesn't work in this situation for me. The point of this thread is to highlight the dangers for both biker and car driver alike, regardless of their perception of the other. Using this thread to vilify one or the other is a bit below the belt for me.

  8. I've had the car 2 weeks now after purchasing it second hand. It's the 1.6 Greenline Elegance with leather electric adjustable seats, columbus sat nav, parking sensors, park assist etc. First impressions were a bit glum, the dealer could have done a better job with the prep (supermarket job, not a main dealer) but that was sortable with some elbow grease. First thing I did (after putting some juice in it given it was bone dry) was try to connect the works blackberry. What a pain in the butt. The iPhone connected straight up but the blackberry took days of fiddling!! It's working for now though! First impressions........... Comfortable, love the programmable seats (especially with 'er indoors' jumping in it every 5 minutes and leaving the seat touching the steering wheel), spacious, smooth, love the touchscreen phone feature and nice and reigned to drive. Did a few work related journeys (about 150 miles in total) before our long slog to Paris via Birmingham and London. Now then. The sat nav, despite the moans of 'stay on this road for a long time' was bang on. Absolutely super, both in the UK and in France. MPG was impressive too. About 49mpg on the 130km motorways in France, 56 to 59 on the UK motorways, 62 ish on the UK A roads and if I try really hard I can get 65 plus (best was 79 on a 15 min drive to the mother in laws - such a geek I even took a picture of the maxidot!) on A and B roads. After reading some threads on here I switched the badges to the black Citigo ones as I think they look smart, I've left the wheels as they are though. I ditched those awful green Greenline logos off the sides within a day, they looked pants. I'm thinking of a remap, but think I'll hold my horses for another 12 months. I've tried the auto park job 3 times. 2 times it was bang on, the 3rd I'd have banged a bin if I didn't hit the brake! All in all I LOVE the car so far and the economy given the size of this thing is outrageous! Boring probably but I feel good writing this. Well done Skoda!

  11. Exactly. The biker is going too fast and the car driver hasn't looked far enough down the road. Both as bad.

  12. Never said it was just the bike, or it was just the car. It was a contribution of both IMO. Approaching a junction at 97mph is just stupid. Even if its an empty road, let alone seeing a car moving across into the filter lane. Both bad driving and bad riding IMO.

  16. And it really is very basic, as it couldn't really be any simpler The kit comes as a pair of struts and fittings, not just the one supplied by another manufacturer For the offside, undo one of the bonnet hinge bolts, insert the R strut mount, then bolt up again Then undo one of the wing bolts, insert the R wing strut mount, with the ball pointing into the engine bay Then simply screw the nylon sockets onto the end of one of the struts, and push onto the two mounts you have just fitted The original bonnet strut requires a flat screwdriver to open up the clip, then pull the strut clear Fitting the nearside strut is exactly the same as the offside, but using the fixings marked L If I remember correctly, the bonnet hinge bolts are a large star fitting, but I don't recall the size As I said, it really couldn't be simpler................if I can do it anyone can

  18. Every post I've made on this topic has also said as much, the biker was going too fast. But the car driver had as much responsibility for the death too. Certainly not the innocent scapegoat victim that some are trying to paint them as, and I'm sure the courts looked at the footage frame by frame too, and came to the same conclusion. Speeding or not they SHOULD have seen the bike and SHOULDN'T have tried to nip in front of it. The earlier post wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, but the more I read about this across a few different forums the more I see blame aimed at the biker. Yet when I read about it on a bike specific forum the bikers (and like I have all said the way through this thread) have acknowledged that the rider was going way too fast and that also contributed greatly to the crash. It just seems like (and take a look at facebook if you really want to see some anti biker sentiment) that the majority of folk see no wrong in what the car did. And I disagree, even in this thread I've read that the car driver was not to blame and should have got away with it. What? Got away with ending a life due to not paying attention? They have to be held responsible somehow, the other guy has already paid the ultimate price! The thing that makes me laugh is that I see plenty of cars being driven at similar speeds on those type of roads. I had one in a BMW trying to push me down a NSL B road today even though I was doing the full 60, it wasn't enough for matey boy and he was three feet from my back wheel and I had my wife on the back. I pulled over into a bus stop as soon as I could because he was being erratic and pushy and as soon as I indicated left to pull into the bus stop he floored it and came by less than a foot from the side of the bike and roared off down the road. Cars also speed not just bikes! And what's more we've all done it. So all this poor driver was a scapegoat attitude is simply wrong. 50% of the blame should lay with them and since they didn't die, then a different punishment has to teach them a lesson. David learned his the hardest way. I do, they clearly cut the corner, and as this still image shows they had a clear view of the bike yet somehow didn't see it. If they had driven to the end of the stacker lane the bike would have passed by before the turn had even begun. They were trying to nip in front of the bike. The camera doesn't lie. They have a smashed car and a few extra quid on their premium each year, but you should see the other bloke. They should have to live with what they've done I'm afraid. I wasn't aware that drivers are not obliged to look out for or give way to speeding traffic.I guess the short version is two wrongs don't make a right. And there were definitely two wrongs here. ^^^ That's not very nice but I've seen far more hateful stuff posted all over the shop toward the rider. But this comment illustrates the common sentiment over this video which has gone viral, across all sorts of forums. eg. It was entirely the bikers fault because he was going fast and he somehow deserved to die for it. I went to a guys house today to buy a jacket for my wife and without prompting he started chatting about it, it's been in the national press, on the BBC and every motor vehicle based forum seems to be talking about it. It's good that it brings about discussion, but the video will only be helpful if car drivers and bike riders can see the faults on both sides. Otherwise I fear it will become destructive and worsen driver/biker relations not increase awareness as was the intention of the family who released it.

  29. I can't believe some of the comments on this thread. It was not speed that caused the accident. Speed was a contributing factor. The cause of the accident was the car pulling across the path of the biker, and speed was a factor in as much as if the biker had been travelling at a speed more in keeping with the hazards ahead of him, he may (and here I do mean "may") have survived. I have seen the aftermath of a car pulling across a biker doing 30mph in similar circumstances. That biker ended up in hospital badly injured through no fault of his own. That biker was me, 25 years ago. I was travelling at a reasonable speed for the road conditions and traffic. I didn't stand a chance and neither did this guy. In my case, I almost wrote off the side of an estate car and went over the top of it. I had nowhere to go and I had seen the driver waiting to pull across and they had seen me. I slowed down and to this day I cannot fathom why the woman driving did what she did. That ended up in court and I won substantial damages. Had this biker been within the speed limit, the outcome may have been just the same or he may have been thrown clear and survived. It is a tragic accident and a young chap lost his life...no-one deserves that. I do believe that the police did right in prosecuting the car driver. The biker had obviously contributing liability for the accident because he failed to see the danger or at least to react to it in time but the fact remains that the car driver who MUST have seen the biker approach pulled across his path and in doing so ended a life prematurely. If they didn't see the biker, then they must have been either blind or simply not looking. Either way they don't deserve to be on the road. A licence is a privilege NOT a right and too many people forget this. The end result, sadly, in all these cases is that there is only one real loser and that's the biker, no-matter who is at fault. I still ride several bikes, including a powerful sportsbike and I have to admit that driving standards generally, are appalling. I look out for idiots on the road every time I go out (you need eyes in the back of your head) and am rarely disappointed. I have lost count of the number of times car drivers have pulled out in front of me, cut me up as if I wasn't there and drive on as if nothing happened. I am ready for it (mostly) because I ride defensively because experience tells me I'd end up in a wooden overcoat if I didn't. You have to pick the time and the place to enjoy the capabilities of a sportsbike, but for most part you need to ride defensively. I agree with the OP. Let's "Look out for each other" because life is way too precious to ever become complacent behind the wheel of a car or when riding a bike

  30. The attitude of the yes lot is a bit of a worry. Haven't seen any YES posters vandalised but I have seen plenty of ripped and spray painted NOs. Got the feeling a NO sticker on a car is a sure way of it getting keyed.

  33. Reminds me of a trip to a climbing wall a few years ago. Amid the usual banter, i shouted up to a chap above me that was struggling to make a tricky move that he was "climbing like a one armed man". 35. Indeed, lots of people with all the gear and no idea! I would class myself as a fast rider, I go in fast intermediate on track days but there's always someone better!! I got over taken (undertaken on the inside) by a 1 armed man on an RGV 250! There's a lot to be said for planning and being smooth and fluid not to mention getting the most out of your bike.

  37. There is a Hot 'RS' coming, but sadly its going to be from Dacia, (Renault) and not for the EU. http://autocar.co.uk/car-news/moscow-motor-show/dacia-sandero-rs-performance-hatch-works But what the Skoda CEO was reported to say was 'there will be no vRS with the new replacement. (paraphrase) & in another Interview, another Skoda Senior was quoted as having said, we like to build fast cars if people want to buy them, we will see. (paraphrase) http://topgear.com/uk/car-news/skoda-fabia-vrs-is-no-more-skoda-suv-coming-2013-08-21 http://autocar.co.uk/car-news/frankfurt-motor-show/skoda-fabia-vrs-axed So when they reveal the Monte Carlo version of the Sportier, Crispier, more youthful New Fabia, they can just do a warm version down the line, maybe with a 150 bhp 1.4 TSI ACT Manual & DSG version, & a 1.4 -1.6 TDI with 140 bhp, maybe as a Combi or Spaceback. ?? Should all the experience of faster cars gathered from their Motorsport Heritage only be available in Rally Inspired small cars with a maximum 108 bhp, or if you spend £24,000 plus and buy a real vRS, eg a Bloater Octavia vRS.?

  38. Next update! Rather an impulse buy to be honest as it's only a small issue that bothered me since having the 17" wheels fitted.....brakes! These came up for a decent price locally and since my mate was having a few other bits off him I managed to knock a bit more off. Thanks to Coskev for fitting as they confused me having never held any sort of caliper like this before. While fitting the brake fluid was also changed and this was used Lovely colour stuff! Brakes feel great! Already watching a set of DS2500 pads on eBay and some decent discs but they can wait for now. I want to paint them ASAP as soon as I get some time to spend on them cleaning them up etc. Would have been a better idea to rebuild them but busy this week and next and combe is next weekend!

Only bought a few QD's and a couple of bottles of FAB (1 for samuir) and a sample pot of Hellshine The abyss jelly wax. (I've had to put it in the fridge it just melts when left out) Really looking forward to testing out the new QD's Oh and I got a few stainless steel spray bottles for decanting. And a decanting tool to make life easier.

  47. Nail - Head, the tar-performance is significantly less good than a stand alone something to do with the formulation, TarX is a very good tar remover but there are plenty of others. I would look (for wheels) at using a nono-acid wheel cleaner like VP Bilberry or Autobrite's Very Cherry to remove the majority of dirt etc and then use my decon products like IronX, TarX, TRIX as a follow up step to shift the embedded brake dust and tar spots. Probably the more effective and cost effective way to go for me. Some companies offer a full whack all in one product like the Sonax Xtreme Wheel cleaner which removes dirt, ferrous particles all in one step, but the first hit of it will probably just react to the surface break dust and then you will need to respray and agitate, not that cost effective. All of the iron removers work on a chemical reaction which is finite based on the amount of chemical and iron to react together, you can turn all that surface brake dust purple and go oooooooH! but for me you are just wasting money, 5 litres of a good dilutable wheel cleaner will last you an age unless you are valeting cars for a living.
