  1. OK, let me put it in equestrian terms then, if it helps. Would you like to use a bridle the right size and with a bit suitable for your particular pony's mouth, or would you like some random bridle made to fit by the use of a hole punch, some string and whatever bit we have lying around? Both options will "work" but the fitted one will cost you more.

  3. Scrap the whole scheme and put it on fuel. Those who do the most miles or driving inefficient cars pay more. No complicated administration involved, just a simple "you use more you pay more".

  4. Good Evening All, After much deliberation I bought a new camera recently, opting for the Canon Powershot SX510 HS, and have some photos of the car taken with said unit. Thanks to those for their input on my thread asking advice on cameras. It seems a decent little thing, hopefully the photos will confirm that! Anyway, onto the stuff you want to hear about. So the car was looking a little dull after it being a while since I last dusted off the DA and I had the luxuries of some time off and decent weather so got cracking. I was able to use a few new (to me) products during the process, some purchased and some borrowed (cheers Hunty) and am very impressed with the results and use of them. So, the process: Jet washed with the Karcher. Snow foamed with Bilt Hamber Autofoam. Jet washed. Washed using 2BM, Dooka Wash Pad and Meguiars Detailing Range Shampoo. Jet washed. CarPro TRiX applied, left to dwell then agitated. Jet washed. Clayed with Bilt Hamber Autoclay. Jet washed. Washed again with 2BM etc. Dried. Machined with DAS6 Pro using Scholl Concepts S17+ and CG Hexlogic Pads. Second stage polish with Menzerna Final Finish and finishing pads. Final stage with Prima Amigo and finishing pads. Sealed with Angelwax Desireable. Engine bay cleaned up. Changed wheels from standard vRS to Octavia Spiders, Meguiars Endurance Tyre Gel applied. I think that covers the process really. The new products to me were the foam, the Final Finish, Prima Amigo and the Angelwax. The foam worked really well, doesn't foam as thick as Ultimate Snow Foam that I've used prior to this but it performs perfectly and smells lovely. The Final Finish is great too, added depth to the finish nicely and was easy to work. The Prima Amigo is a real revelation; absolute doddle to work and the feel it leaves is unreal. I'll be buying some of that, along with the Angelwax too. That stuff is mega, with water behaviour like I've never seen before. I'm sure you've read enough by now. However, I'd like to thank you guys for your help and advice on here. Numerous times I've asked for recommendations and so on and have always had helpful responses; some of which aided my product selection for this detail. I'm only an enthusiast, hence why I ask for the informed opinions of folk on here who have been there and done it. So thank you to folk like Samuir (Ste), ChrisRS, Northern Monkey and of course my good pal Hunty. That isn't an exhaustive list, but you know who you are if I've missed you out. I appreciate your help and have a nine year old car I'm rather proud of. So here are the photos. Hopefully they'll come up in before/after order. I feel the colour is even more bold and strong than it was before. Very pleased indeed: Of course there are a few reflection shots to finish off. Thanks for reading everyone. As ever, your tips and advice are more than welcome. Clarkey.

  5. We have to be reminded that the Golf R is a very good car. Makes owners feel better. Better than lowly Skoda owners. Why be a tiny fish in a VW Golf R forum when you can be a big fish here Tom?

  7. I think that is your problem. Whilst you are looking under the bonnet get someone else to rock the engine by bringing up the clutch slowly in first and reverse whilst the handbrake is on tight. See how much movement you are getting.

  8. I'm not sure I understand all of the complaints about the varying cost of road tax. It is such a small percentage of the overall cost of buying, running and selling a car that it almost pales into insignificance.

  10. I don't think anybody wants this thread locked, I certainly don't. Some more entertaining content would be nice rather than all the reviews etc. We can google that stuff anytime we like. I want to see Keith doing a 4-wheel drift in his R down his local supermarket carpark ;-) lol

  11. To be fair though, it's an old thread now. How many more reviews and repeats do we need to see? It's got the faint smell of an owner wanting to brag / confirm to themselves / others that they are happy with their lease/purchase. (Which they should be, after reading around 1000 reviews posted on this thread alone, it's a very capable car!) I wish there was a MK1 Fabia VRS thread similar to this, that could have been hundreds on pages long by now and full of reviews / reposted reviews and owners briefly describing 'went for a drive' stories.

  12. Hi! Wow it's been a long time since I've had the chance to log on again. Thanks buddy, it's around 63.5cm on the front, and 67 now on the rear... approximately. I do now have an addition to my car. 19" are back on but looking better than ever!!! They will need a refurb I'm not quite sure on the matt look at the moment but they do sit nicely. All photos taken on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge too - the camera is great

  14. I suspect that the slightly cheaper one is using a generic by-pass relay electrics system, which is not a good idea, and could possibly damage the complicated wiring (Called CanBus) that the Yeti is fitted with. If fitted without using the proper wiring plug it will also invalidate the warranty on the car. If a proper "plug-in" system is used then the car needs to be reprogrammed. That will not only disable the rear parking sensors but will also: turn off the car rear fog light when the trailer is plugged in, extend the bulb failure system to the trailer, which then acts as the legally required notification if the trailer flashers don't work, extend the alarm system to include the trailer, alter the flash rate of the flashers when the trailer is plugged in, alters the car stability system when the trailer is plugged in. Spend the extra and do the job properly.

I recently made the huge mistake of selling my much loved Mk1 Fabia VRS, and am now looking to get back behind the wheel of (when I can find one) a Xenon clad Mk1 Octavia VRS estate. I know - I may have a wait on my hands !!! Anyway, off for a look around. Speak soon. Boylesie.

  24. Thats her near a thousand miles now with pro. I just snow foamed her then 2 bucket wash, open hose wash down then dried. Done the windows and tyres with AG gear. Im have to admit to being impressed now with the pure durability and fact nothing really sticks to it. Near 3 weeks now with 2 coats of above wax. Conclusion: I'm impressed, but again, just from the gut, i don't love it. Im going to give it until August then ill do the full clay mitt etc and reapply the pro wax. After that ill decide if I'm going to try another wax.

  27. Those signs are confusing at best and I have to say I agree it looks more like you're outside the disk than inside. Parking in the free area rather than the paid for area, surely you could argue that you've not cost them anything, because you actually paid to park in the free area (If they prove you did) and as such they have actually had a financial benifit not lost. Either way, don't roll over. I'd love to see the FOI request on this one too, as I bet there are plenty of people they've fined for parking in the wrong bit: - How many fines for parking in the wrong bit - How many appeals - What's been done to address poor signage. That'll be worth £10 to see

  29. Hey Clarkey! It has been a while since you popped round to my place – was that last summer? Wow – on the detailing effort, what more can I say – absolutely stunning work my friend. Looks like you put in quite a shift on the old girl – how many hours work start to finish? An interesting selection of products used on there too; and good write-up; One of the best we have had on the forum for quite some time it must be said. Nice to see Angelwax Desirable on the car btw – one of my favourites in the wax collection. Primo Amigo is on my list of products to test as well – great results; the gloss levels look immense! Finally – nice to see some pics from the new camera and I like the new wheels too. I assume you are well chuffed with the upgrade on both fronts :sun: I certainly hope we see more threads from you buddy – quality stuff! Cheers, Ste. PS: NorthernMonkey gives it a too BTW; and thanks for the mention!

  30. The paper doesn't seem to compare forward facing and rear facing car seats, but since it's an American paper, I presume all or most car seats are forward facing. I don't know about the UK, but here in Sweden almost all children ride in rear facing seats up to at least four years of age.

  32. Please don't take this the wrong way Keith but why on earth do you care what mags/journos think? You've made your choice and bought a car so why not just enjoy it rather than be constantly comparing to others? There really is no need to be always linking every article in the various mags about the current crop of hot hatches onto this skoda forum. We are all Internet-savvy and can use google if we wish to do some research. I'd much rather look on this thread and read about your personal owner experience of living with an R (inc mods, track days etc if so inclined!) rather than stuff from the motoring press. Anyhow just my 2p for what it's worth!

  33. so i had the map sent over to me by shark on Monday 29th, got it straight on gave it a bit of a drive on trade plates drove fine, waited till the 1st to get some tax on it, once taxed i took it home put a fair few miles on it so thought it was time to put my foot down at least once and damn it was slow as it was only mapped to run actuator pressure! so straight on the phone to shark to get myself booked in for proper custom mapping, got it booked for 8th, only realised over the weekend that it was due a cambelt in march so quickly put a cambelt on it Monday after work which turned into a total mission as i was way too tired and still aching from go karting the day before! Anyway today (8th) came around so i got up at 5am got myself ready and headed up to shark got there at 9:30, the car wouldn't fit on the rollers so i grabbed some tools and pulled the front bumper off, once it was on Ben played around with the map but was struggling a little only to realise the actuator wasn't properly set up, so he had to get that set up properly and then continued, at the end of the day Ben managed to get 244bhp and 375nm of torque, which was quite low, was suffering from quite a bit of heat soak and back pressure through the boost system. I knew the whole time i was sorting the turbo that at some point i will need to fit a bigger cooler and get rid of the pancake boost pipe after looking into it, it looks like this is causing all my problems, so Ben has set the car up all i need to do is sort the cooler and pipework when i can and he thinks it will automatically make another 40bhp and then i just need him to tweak it a little more. finally left Shark at 5:10 this evening and wow is all i can say... even though the car isn't making any more power really, it is a whole different car to drive! absolutely loved it! cannot wait to sort the cooler and pipes now!! Sorry for the long essay and no pictures! i do have a couple small videos but nothing amazing! and one picture below.. a picture to prove i was there

  39. I'd avoid supermarket fuel mate. You generally get what you pay for with that. Cheap leftover rubbish. BP and Shell aren't really that much dearer, especially if you consider the extra miles you can get and how kinder it is to the car. As said above, get some cleaner in the next time you fill up and replace the fuel filter. Hopefully saves the car from the scrapyard!

  42. Out here we get signs saying "left lane ceases, merge right" which annoys me as I consider 1/ it penalises those who keep left. 2/ it encourages 'bullying' from behind in a merging situation and 3/ it raises the question as to how the 'curb side' lane can "end". No wonder people won't drive in the left lane - force the outside lane hogs to to fret about the merge coming up.

  43. If it doesn't make a grinding noise when the motor moves, you may be lucky, and the regulator may just not be gripping the glass. If you strip the door card off down to the carrier as detailed in that thread, and then remove the two rubber grommets as circled below, when you drop the window down, you should see the two rubber grippers that grab the bottom of the glass. You may be able to tighten them up. There may also be a plastic peg that goes through a hole in the glass to further hold the glass to the regulator. This picture is a for a Fabia, but I'd imagine it's looks very similar.

  45. Disclaimer: I sell them! In my experience customers are equally happy ( and unhappy). Both brands offer decent reliability and the same map update cycle athe moment, ie: 4 times a year. Both use very simple menu structures that most customers seem to find intuitively easy to get on with. There's some anecdotal evidence that existing "old" TomTom users moving onto the latest units which have a completely different user interface don't find it as intuitive. Customers that have only ever tried the new ones don't seem to have a problem. The best advice I can offer is to keep the operating software happy by checking for updates regularly.

  46. Thanks everyone for your help and encouragement. Ok, so I decided to take the plunge make three adaption’s to the car; Hill-Hold Control, add the “hidden” menu to the Columbus and change the “Comfort Turn Signal” from the standard 3 blinks to 5. I chose Hill-Hold as the first one I’d try as this seemed to be the easiest, as all that needed to be changed was to add a “tick” to Bit 0. So I did a full auto scan of the car before I started and saved it. I also took the precaution of saving the factory settings on each of the modules before I changed them! Well, as I feared, I soooo managed to royally f**k that lot up and now nothi…. Nah I’m joshing! I’m pleased to report (and not a little surprised and relieved too I can tell you!) that I was able to make the three mods without any issues. Doing the first one was a bit of a breath-holding moment, but once I’d done that I moved onto the Columbus, which after recoding needed a reboot to work, and then did the “Comfort Blinking” change. Oh boy, Hill hold is great! I wondered why this wasn’t enabled from the factory; I can only guess that this is because during the build, some builds were fitted with ABS units from the parts bin that could be enabled, whilst others were not, so it’s just easier to disable it on those ABS units where it could be enabled. Although it would be a little odd why you’d have a “mixed bag” of parts in that way, if this isn’t the reason, I’m at a bit of a loss what any other reason would be…? Hang-on…. hang-on a minute… Oh my gawd, it’s not illegal in the UK, is it? The Columbus installation menu threw-up something that I initially thought was an odd; under the “HDD Status”, the tempStatus is shown as “degraded”! Thankfully, doing a search on this great site and reading up a contribution to tread from Rustynuts, though it doesn’t sound good, that status is normal…phew! The “Comfort Blinking” increase to 5 “blinks” is also really useful, as personally I’ve found that 3 “blinks” is just a “blink” or two short when joining traffic or lane changing. So XDS, Easy Entry (I have a wrecked back), emergency “Blinking” stop lights, coming home via fog lights (save the xenons!) are next on the list. Thanks again to everyone for your help and encouragement. Cheers... Rob
