  1. I've only just got back home after leaving at 3pm! This wasn't due to bad traffic but a stop off in Headingly then the rest of the day with the family at Castle Howard. Thanks for a great meet up, it was nice to see people again. I'll have to get a pic up in the morning Jim, I reckon the Vectra could now challenge your Fabia for the dirtiest car. Also, I think Chris deserves a 'well done' for managing to eat the biggest battered fish I've ever seen!

  6. Great to see you all again. The Fish and Chips were certainly worth the journey. Thank you Andy for organising it. I think I was right and mine was the muckiest. It will be clean(er) next time I come to a meet. The journey back wasn't bad, nearly 59 mpg when I got home.

  11. Got a surprise email from the dealership this morning to say that have the car! It'll be ready for me to pick up on Wednesday - a nice Christmas present Order placed 11/09/2015 so that makes it just under 14 weeks waiting for a fully loaded L&K 280 estate. I was expecting to wait longer.

  13. VAG obviously doesn't understand the power of GOOD relationships.I would have done it as a running update for no charge during a not cheap scheduled service and told the customer how much I cared about his loyalty........but I guess I'm a bit out of date and suffer from too much vision.

  16. Well after 1300 miles with my first DSG I thought I would update.... I love it ! BUT ! The weird thing is I drive it almost exclusively in manual mode with just the odd nod at auto. I sometimes use auto when : Pulling away at islands so I can concentrate on what's happening without worrying about gears Pulling away from lights if I think the person who has nipped into the outside lane deserves smoking :-) somehow that's more satisfying in auto ... And that's about it.... I just love the paddles !

  22. I have now driven the car a few more miles and I must say that the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance tyres, have lowered the noise level to what I consider to be acceptable. However, I will still be adding some sound deadening material to the car at a later date, ie., springtime ! The ride comfort has also improved by effectively making the suspension feel softer and thereby absorbs the small poor road surface bumps found on urban streets. I have read a report that this tyre is now a standard factory fitment on the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque, with particular claims in helping reduce noise levels in SUV 4x4 cars. The tyre also performed well in wet weather grip tests, I believe that this is the correct tyre for me ! I did take my car back to the supplying Skoda dealer to evaluate the tyre noise with the Turanza tyres and to be fair, they did compare my car to two other Fabia`s and commented that one of them fitted with Dunlop tyres was a little quieter. Clearly, my Turanza`s could not be replaced under warranty, I never expected this. Here is the BUT, as a goodwill gesture the dealer agreed to replace all four tyres of my choice and cover the cost of two of them and I paid for the other two. The dealer also agreed to price match any online fitted price that I could find. I also kept the original Turanza tyres. As you can imagine, I am more than satisfied and very happy with this result. The dealer was Sandicliffe Skoda in Leicester and I would like to thank Colin and Mark in the car sales dept. for making this happen. It is all too easy to bad mouth main dealers but in my case, I believe a little praise and thanks is due. A Very Happy Christmas to you all.

  25. The Cadiz wheels on the R are my first diamond cut alloys. I wasn't that keen on them at first, but boy are they easy to keep clean and they look good for much longer when dirty. They still look fairly clean when a silver painted alloy would look caked The only downside is when you kerb them, big repair bills and not everyone will tackle them to a good standard. I have one with a chunk out the rim, not bad in my view, but both repair shops locally with CNC machines have refused. Even TWS who I sent pictures to said they would have a go but would charge close to £200 and wouldn't guarantee results :( Edited for stupid autocorrect :(

  35. Sorry Ken, yes I did know you were slightly younger than me. I was trying to support your comment. To the younger sprogs: Just remember you will be old one day! And to be honest, I find more poor driving from (some) young people, more rudeness from (some) younger people, less manners in (some) young people and more general ignorance from (some) young people.

  36. Oh yes, so very much stuff. I've got close with the forklift one, spun round too quick while I haven't finished bringing the mast down. You can get away with it with loft insulation, so I did the same with gro-bags. Swear I got to 44.5degrees. Went into a shop as I was doing every night, stripped out the herbs and spices section, put the new stand in, filled it back up with stock. Got signed off. The manager remarked how he hadn't been expecting me until the next night, I thought nothing of it, drove out, round the corner, and then saw the shop I should have put the stand in That was a long night. Told someone "yeah, that looks like the water pipe that's there capped off, I'll bang a washer point on it when I get chance." they decided to save me the job, leading to an emergency visit from the gas board. Cutting a scrap car in half to take in, then as I went through the sill, realised the fuel tank wasn't empty. Which lead to a constant stream of fuel piping out to feed the fire. First thought, throw the car out of the unit door. Yep, I hadn't brought the key for the vehicle door with me. Listened to, and believed a recovery driver's diagnosis on a few occassions. Last time I bought a brand new starter motor and fitted it, because there's "no way" it could be a broken solenoid wire. £140 and 3 inches of wire later, guess which it was? Walked up to a server, thought "that hard drive sounds well sketchy" and pulled out the one I thought it was, just as the one next to it that actually was faulty **** its pants. Put a display cabinet together, noticed a couple of downlights were out, and though the famous words "They're only 12v, I'll just reconnect them with it live". It's not the voltage though is it, it's the current that matters, and downlight transformers have quite a lot of that. I grabbed a live connection, got a jolt, went to let go and every time my heart beated, my hand spasmed shut again. I believe my reaction went something like "****! Pete! ****! Pete! ****! Pete! ****! Turn ****! the ****! ****ing ****! power ****! to ****! this ****ing ****! cab-****!inet ****! off" Obviously, everyone rushed to my aid, right after they'd finished collapsing in fits of laughter for several minutes

  38. Having seen a VRS 230 advertised on its site at a special offer price of £23830, I asked a dealer for a PX quote on my Jan 15 VRS with 10k miles and specced to the same level as 230 barring diff/nav/electric seats and the vital Nurburgring lap timer. This spec as per my signature block below was approx £27K list price. I was flabbergasted, £16K now and £14 in 20 weeks time when the car would be built. Much as I wanted the Diff and extra 10 Bhp, I can't justify trading in at almost 50% off list price after 18 months. I also thought that the advert is probably disingenuous as the deal had to be agreed to and would be 'honoured' with the Skoda Loyalty bonus already included in it, there is no mention of this on the website. It's either a special offer or it isn't. I have always defended dealers on this forum and appreciate that you lose money on new cars and dealers need to make a living. I have seen lots of similar comments on depreciation from regular contributors like Pipsyreturns etc and thought the final value forecasts were a bit harsh but it appears they are spot on. I advise owners of good-condition MkII petrol and possibly TDI owners to stick with them unless they really need the extra toys and slightly more room, power/torque. The MkIII is a better car and is the one for you if you don't mind the current loss of value.

Theyre in pretty bad condition as they have about 5mm of corroded paint on them [emoji23] Stripped them down.. Ill get some pics up once i get them out the shot blaster. 41. Glad you're getting it sorted. Unfortunately, there probably wasn't any need to change the alternator either. Just as a heads-up there are two other common Fabia 'gotchas' that can cost people lots of money when mis-diagnosed. The strip-fuse on top of the battery that supplies the ABS pump often cracks and diagnostic readers tend to make garages think it's a problem that requires a new ABS unit, rather than just a fuse. The solenoid wire on the starter motor breaks, causing some to think they need a new starter motor. All three are free or very cheap repairs.

  43. Point is All Seasons are quite capable of handling mud, snow and temperature down to -5C at the very least. Unless you are in snow week after week I do not see the trade of the slightly better snow performance, even that debatable by the AE report, than having to use H or below rated tyres that tend to be less stiff carcass, noisier and less economical. 3 cars on All Seasons, one on Winters currently and all ready for whatever we get, maybe even the -20C we sometimes get here though hopefully not needed and just the cold and wet weather to handle.

  44. Ha Ha, Its not Sudbury thats the problem Mick, Its across the border into Essex (Gary boys you know). I work in Braintree.... you need to wear hard hats and Flack Jackets to drive around Essex! Sudbury Suffolk sounds much the same as your Sudbury, coffin dodgers and tractors. More horses than cars pass my house each day!

Don't recommend it Ed, I tried that first about a year ago, it wasn't the best of conversaions I've ever had and I'll try to remember the way it went Basically they've 3 types of bulb upgrade, lets call them Bright, Brighter and Fn Bright. All are street legal, none have a wattage on them or a temperature !!! Errrrrrr and none are available in H7, H8 and H15 so WTF Haven't been back to Halfords since. Yeah it is to do with the Court Order cos yes I did tell them whaat I thought of them Regards T

  46. aye, all excellent advice, thanks a bunch people. It's made my shiny new dogbone all horrible  If it is the cam cover gasket, are these easy enough to source and replace? I am very keen to have a go at things myself as much as possible but will let the professionals do major engine work.. I have replaced brakes, taken EGR off and cleaned, self service etc, so that's my level of mechanicing
