  1. ^^ What kind of cars are you borrowing or hiring with a DSG? Are these diesels or petrols and anything recently produced? That is some damning post you made there that seems very far from many peoples experiences other than sometimes journalists and others that are very anti auto or DSG. Test drives are the best plan, and set the tyre pressures and remember demos have a bit of a memory of recent drivers behaviour.

  2. This evening I had to take our daughter to Leeds for a sleepover, leaving at just before 4pm on a Friday, probably the worst time possible to travel. We got delayed by traffic in Lincoln but in the main it was a good journey. I dropped our daughter off and headed out to Bradford to pick up a takeaway curry for dinner (it is our favourite Indian restaurant ever so well worth it), refuelled and then headed home. Any thoughts of '500 miles from a tank' were quickly dispelled as I grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and headed for the outside lane, The little Citigo is an absolute joy when driven like this. Lots of revs off roundabouts to make reasonable progress and 'Driving Rock - The Ultimate Collection' on the CD player made for a thoroughly enjoyable drive. The roads back were relatively clear and I made it home in just under 2 hours. What was more surprising was that the PID was showing 55mpg! I have owned some nice cars over the years but the Citigo is right up there as one of the best all round cars I have ever had. Ridiculously inexpensive to own and run and yet an absolute hoot to drive when you are in the mood, but licence friendly at the same time. I had a really big grin on my face when I got home

  3. It's allows good to find that right product. Someone on here recommended the AutoGlym Engine Degreaser. I've used plenty of others before but picked some of that stuff up to make up my 3 of 2 on Halfords cleaning products and amazed at how good it was.

  4. I stopped using the Scotoiler as it seemed to be lots of adjusting and never finding and ideal. I was recommended Castrol Chain Lube Racing which has been great, you don't need much to get a well lubricated chain that lasts. Not needed anything else since.

  7. *** UPDATE 22/10/16 *** For anyone interested in this retrofit, I've finally got round to successfully completing the job. It is possible to fit an Octavia III-paddle shift MFSW (for those fancying the nice perforated leather/flat bottom type wheel), I believe several members have made this swap, but you will need to fit the Superb III buttons (part no. 3V0 919 719B) as the Octavia III buttons are not compatible on the Superb. It may (though don't quote me), also be possible to buy the paddles (part no. 3V0 951 523?) and buttons from Skoda and fit them to a standard wheel as the boss looks like it is standard, though I'm not sure the paddles will come with the figment screws (N 909 680 02) (your local Skoda parts department should be able to help with this). You will require the 3V0 919 719B buttons as the standard, non paddle shift equipped wheel buttons, part no. 3V0 919 719A do not have the connectors fitted to take the paddle ribbon cables. No coding should be necessary. Obviously now the Sportline has the very nice flat bottom paddle shift wheel fitted as standard to the DSG equipped car, this would be the easiest swap but probably the most expensive. My advice would be to spec it on a new build if buying new but for those of us who fancy paddle shift as a retrofit, it is possible, but at quite a bit of expense. The buttons set me back £216. Wheels are quite often available on Flea Bay. I just hope that after all the effort and expense, it was worth it.

  9. I came to Skoda from a Merc C class estate and haven't looked back. Much more car for less money. Is there an Audi/Merc/BMW these days is that isn't fitted with Clarkson diameter wheels and back breaking suspension and ride. Even worse many of the usable options are only available on Sport models, even harder ride! No thanks, not anymore. I am converted and have no intention of reverting. As you can guess from the comments I love the softer ride of the S3. My 150dsg goes plenty fast enough for me, handles the road well for such a big car and is very quiet for an oil burner. If you feel the need to massage your backside then switch to sport mode in the DCC and you can have a firmer ride. For the next one I will, however, return to the petrolhead section. They are even quieter and smoother. Experience of mpg in the real world also looks to be much closer than the official figures. Of course the real joy is when you pull up or get back to your car to see people looking puzzled. They see the L&K motif on the side and get confused. The look of disbelief on their faces when I say 'oh, it's a Skoda' That is priceless and a unique experience that you won't get elsewhere

  10. Ive got a rolling road test tomorrow booked in for the old bus. My pal has a 'performance issue' with a revo remap on his A6 3.0 TDI so thought I'd take mine along. Should be interesting to see how it does & will post up some info tomorrow, engine is running really well and is standard bar a stage 1 map applied about 8 years ago! Its done 103k, ran on 99 fuel - hopefully over 200bhp is achievable!

  11. I've driven loads of cars over the last three years through work's hire car agreement, courtesy cars from the dealer and test drives) the ones with dsg are,Passat 2.0 diesel (pre-mqb model) Passat bluemotion diesel (1.6?) also pre-mqb Mk2 Fabia 1.4tsi Monte Carlo Audi A4 2.0 Quattro (petrol) Yeti diesel (no idea on engine size) Mk2 superb diesel of some capacity All cars were under a year old when I drove them, often with only a few thousand miles on them. I've also been a passenger in the new Golf R estate and it's the same, impressive driving fast but pretty poor in traffic. They do get better with more power but still not great. The ZF box in the BMWs isn't quite as good imho driving fast but it's close however it's light years ahead on the day to day slog through traffic. As for reviews I never put a huge amount of store in them. For a start not that many are long term reviews where people are likely to do heavy traffic rather than a blast on a country road and some motorway. Also they're often cr4p or extremely subjective - the Volvo XC60 r-design and BMW X3 msport suspension are too "hard" and "jiggly" if you are to believe the reviewers. With all the reviews I've seen saying that for the X3 it's a "must" to get the expensive variable dampers but to me driving on 20" wheels the X3 msport is perfectly fine especially as I'm sticking with 19" wheels. As everyone says - each to their own it's very subjective. As for residuals, my 2013 vRS estate was ~25 grand new, 3 years and 30k miles later it's worth about £11500 if you're to believe we buy any car etc.

  12. For those not familiar with Brands Hatch and relying on Sat Nav to find the circuit do not use the DA3 8PU postcode as this relates to sites in the middle/at the back of the circuit and may lead you astray. Use DA3 8PE instead, this is the postcode of the hotel at the main entrance on the A20.

  13. It's completely personal opinion. I personally would never want a manual car again after buying my first auto (DSG) about 4 years ago. It truly was a great gearbox and completely transforms how the car drives and feels. It's one of those things that many struggle to decide like yourself but rarely regret making the choice of DSG. So try a test drive if you've not already had one. As for resale value. It's not like a normal optional extra that just adds appeal not value. The DSG version is a more valuable car so you should get whatever it's worth come the time. Hope that makes sense!? Phil

  15. And another quote by Röhrl which is probably more pertinent to the mentioning of launch control above... Good acceleration is when the tears of excitement flow horizontally to your ears. But also remember a quote attributed to Juan Manuel Fangio... Driving fast on the race track does not scare me. What does scare me is the idiot on the public road who drives too fast because he thinks he is Fangio.

  21. Well I was one of the self-fulfilling prophesies, I couldn't get mine without DSG. After a few decades of manual driving I was a little hesitant and in all honesty I was not won over at the start either. There is a bit of learning to do to get the best out of it. A lot would depend on the driving you do, but if you sit in any traffic at all there is no decision IMHO. It is also pretty effective if you need to get a move on, from pottering about in 'D' a pull back into 'S' puts me in a good position to overtake quicker than I could in a manual. With paddles you can intervene any time to fine tune the auto mode with what you can see ahead with your eyes. Finally there is full manual, it is basically a manual box after all. While it will not be as smooth as a full auto like some of the 8-speeders around, personally I cant really fault its slow speed manners Now I wouldn't go back to a manual

  27. As an example I specced an A6 as close as I could to my MKII Superb Estate (Elegance 170CR manual) the A6 was over 10K dearer, now think how many options you need to remove from the A6 to get get close to the Superb’s price. It was the same again when I compared the new Passat to my current L&K Superb.

  28. Welcome to the forum. Sorry not an answer but 'perceived upmarket value' does hit the nail on the head. A more expensive BMW or one on offer might actually be more upmarket, and Audi A4 or more so a A5 at the same price as a Skoda is likely rather similar or actually down market.

  29. I've been driving auto's for 35 years and I'd say the DSG is mighty impressive. I think it would be really difficult, if you're used to a manual, to make your mind up on a DSG by just a test drive. That'd be a big gamble. You probably ought to either drive several, or try to get an extended test so you can get used to the feel of one. I really don't understand the negative comments about them being a failure at performance. That's certainly not my experience. Gaz

  30. Oh dear. Take it back to the garage that did the clutch and ask them if they have fitted the correct bolt into the dog bone mount. It's been done before,if you fit a bolt that's slightly too long it presses into the steering rack and knackers the rack.

  32. I can see the attraction of DAB and regret not speccing it in our new car, however, it is not the be and end all that some think. I have read that the music quality is not as high as fm, I personally can't tell the difference though. What I can tell is the dreadfully restricted reception of DAB in my part of the country, it is difficult to obtain a signal at all in many areas and when you do the station choice is very small, usually only bbc ones. For areas like mine ( and there are many in the UK ) fm and am are essential. In fact I can listen to footie on R5 live (am) south of the Loire in France, can't do that with DAB.

  34. So over the past couple of weeks I've done a few little tweeks on the vrs.. I've managed to pick up a dtuk tuning box from another member of briskoda but I've not fitted yet. Also I've got and fitted a vwr r600 induction kit to the vrs which only took 5 minutes to fit, what a difference that makes. Picks up alot quicker and you can hear the turbo more and dumping. I've changed all the interior to leds roof doors and boot. Also the the rear indicators to chrome bulbs and the reserving to led too. I've changed the number plate lights to a genuine skoda led light unit from another model which is a direct fit they just need changing on vag com to led. I went and ordered some mudflaps from skoda Ireland all 4 for 37 quid delivered which I am bargain compared to skoda UK which wanted 80 quid I've also changed the famous plate over VR52 LOW if you don't know it haha I think that's it for now.... till the fabia goes

  35. Looked into the twin pass and herd bad things about the heat transfer from hot to cold side pipes, a tuning place round my way done a temp test and the twin pass was much hotter on the cold side than the setup I have, Looking at turbo upgrades but not the std setup, possibly a side winder with screamer pipe and external waste gate, would probably run a k04 hybrid tbh, but and it's a big but...... cash is hard to come by this time of year with the fat man round the corner and 2 kids lol

  45. @Tamber - holy carp what a mess! Just drove my quattro for the first time Only about 2km to get carpets made. But it made me happy. Got into third gear briefly. Speedo reads zero all the time. Steering still noisy. It got a bit damp in the rain and has no passenger window at the moment. But the best bit is it beeps the horn randomly. Must be the slip ring I modified on the new wheel. Not the best when you're trying to be incognito in a car that's not road legal. But funny
