  1. As some of you may recall I traded in the 2014 VRS 2.0 CR for a 1.4 TSi SE DSG about 5 weeks ago, so here's my thoughts 2,000 miles later. I miss the looks of the VRS front end and that's it, I also preferred the candy white paint, but the deal I got on the 1.4TSi meant silver or pass up a car that had only done 780 miles and save £7000 in the process. I really wanted to get away from diesel, and I really needed DSG to help my left wrist heal up. I play a lot of guitar bass and drums, so not changing gear was one less thing for the wrist to cope with. Anyway, the car. If there is a performance difference I can't find it, forget sports mode for the moment, even using kick down to pass someone on the motorway is quite simply awesome. For a 1.4 litre engine this thing is more than quick, it's down right fast. Less road noise, I mean a lot less road noise despite the lack of multilink on the rear end. Economy, 49.9 MPG over 2000 miles compared to 50.4 with the VRS. Engine note, well going from tractor bag of spanners noise to refined petrol tone is music to my ears. :D Niggles, nope not one despite going down a trim level this car has all I need What could be better? Dipstick arrangement means skinned knuckles if your not careful, and an engine cover would have been nice. Only one curry hook in the boot seems a cost cutting exercise too far, but other than that, happy :sun:

  4. I'd like to know how they are going to demonstrate loss and to what extent. After all in the UK you need to show a quantifiable loss in the court to get compensation in these sorts of cases. Personally I hope the suit fails; not to protect VW but because it just feels like a lot of people clammering for 'free' money rather than the actual issue they report to be offended by. After all if it was to do about the environment rather than money, then they'd surely ask for their money to be used in someway to help the environment. Maybe rebuilt rain forests, help animals on the endangered list or even help deal a blow to AIDS or cancer. The only people who win in these cases are the lawyers, they're the ones getting richer....

  7. I didn't think the lounge steps would be very useful but apparently my passengers liked them so I actually took the set from my old L&K and stuck them in my new one :notme: . The 17" spare wheel will be normal. A 16" spare is standard for those of us with 17/18" wheels. I have to admit I've flicked it into Sport a few times and I haven't even 1k km on the clock

  8. The car will sell. I've been on car forums for years and years. Every time a new model comes out, bet it brand new or facelift, it gets slated. Then shock horror a few months down the line everyone has one.

  10. Got new wheels. Will put up a few pics when I can get some daylight. Drove rather cautiously to start with because a) It was the rush hour B) It wouldn't be the first time I've marked a new car within hours by misjudging something or doing something stupid. So a tame drive home in the traffic, but put foot down once for about 3sec. Was in silly territory just with that. 4 sec would have been license losing, and 5 jail time,. But otherwise. On real roads doing real driving I'm glad the suspension isn't any sportier. It's probably about perfect for some of the knobbly roads I drive on. Quiet and civilized on the inside. Can't work anything yet so the radio selection was a bit off, seemed to be pretty much religious stations and Virgin. Just needs a rescan I think. Tis sweet  Took the alloy insurance since it covered diamond cut, and the tyre insurance as they were reasonable together, would only take a couple of wheel claims to pay for itself. GAP was a rip off though but might consider it somewhere else as it will depreciate quite a bit in the next 3yr.

  14. For me I have to ask why was this defeat device developed? What was its function? Why did it exist? From what I can see the purpose of this was to misinform or mislead customers and regulators, and to give the company a competitive edge over other manufacturers so it could sell more cars and make more money. Whilst yes I can't say that I considered in detail the NOx levels produced by the vehicle, nor would I have necessarily chosen this car producing 138mg/km over another vehicle producing 140mg/km, I was aware that the vehicle met the EU5 standard for emissions before I purchased, and therefore I can make fair comparisons against other vehicles which meet the same standard. This should be a level playing field for all manufacturers, and allow the consumer to compare other factors, such as performance, economy, load capacity, finance deals, reliability reports, etc. Would I have bought this vehicle had I been told it only met EU4 standard? No. I don't feel that Skoda UK/VW handling of the scandal has been acceptable, more than a year on I don't know when my car will be fixed, I get sporadic letters from the company to tell me everything is fine. Transparency about the fix is low. From what I can tell even once the fix is applied the vehicle will not meet the original spec, will it just scrape into the EU5 standard. But who knows?? And if it's really that easy for them to fix through a software update, why did they continue to install this software in so many later vehicles? My car is a 2014 model. I can't believe they just forgot it was there... For a whole range of other issues I have not been treated well by Skoda UK and VWFS. Skoda/Volkswagen are not really interested in what their customers have to say about the whole issue, and for that reason I will be joining the group action.

  17. Ha ha. I've just heard a noise outside and found a man fiddling with my bin. I surprised him by asking what he was doing and he said he was returning my bin (it's bin day tomorrow, so the bin was out) and several others that were holding an impromptu party in the middle of the road a few doors down. it would appear the windy gusts have not finished. Very nice of the chap to bring my bin home though :)

  18. Yes, an award. Colin has a Brisky awards thread. I have my 4x4 and snow tyres at the ready, although I have already had a play in the white stuff late last year. Btw, I think I might need an award for the most mentions of Jelly snakes too. I hope you appreciate that even though I have consumed enough alcohol to drive a Smart car as far a Prague, I cam still attempting to use punctuation :) and emojis :) Ooh that's another award, most emojis :):):):)

  24. Hi for sale I have a number of different detailing products for sale, I am looking to buy an rcd510 for my car so will be using money from the sales towards it. The only reason i've decided to sell is they're just not getting used and would prefer for someone to get full use out of them. I was going to put these up in a couple of days but have got a little bit of time so the date on the paper is a couple of days in advance. Brand new trio Wheel Woolies set, SOLD, I now have Monza alloys which are easy to clean otherwise I would have kept these good brushes. Next is a brand new tub of Auto Finesse mint rims unused, the tin has a slight dint at the bottom but doesn't effect it at all, Auto Finesse Spirit sample %70 SOLD Next for sale I have my Das6pro kit with Auto Finesse revitalise kit. I bought this kit with the intention of learning how to machine polish a car, I have used the kit for about 2 hours in total just to practice on an old panel so the machine is really like brand new. It includes the full revitalise kit including pads, pad prime and the 3 polishes which are around %90 full Also included is; Full box it came in Carry case 5" and 6" backing plate Spanner SOLD I also have the following which I will put up pictures asap Auto finesse Desire - Brand new old style tub with presentation box - £90 Delivered Auto Finesse Spirit - 85% old style tub - SOLD Auto Finesse Illusion - 80% old style tub with presentation box - £ 50 Delivered As promised, pictures of the Auto Finesse Waxes Thanks Jamie

Didn't read the brochure as it was ordered over the phone and the colour edition is based in the se spec so one would assume it should come with it Not sure if I should speak to customer care or the dealer I find Rainworth ŠKODA a bit useless at non straight forward stuff plus I didn't order the car from them due to the incompetent salesman

  29. The noise you can hear is the electric water pump, designed to keep on cooling the turbo when the engine is switched off. The problem traditionally with turbos was the engine suddenly cutting off while the turbo was still cherry red hot, and the oil in the turbo's pipes burning off and solidifying. That led to blocked oil pathways and coking, up until... boom. The pump on the S3 cools down the turbo gradually regardless of whether the engine is on or off, so there's nothing to worry about on that score. Drive hard all you like. Edited to fix the typos, courtesy of my six month old who is trying to 'help' inform you all of her latest news from the comfort of my lap. :D

  30. I had recently asked more-or-less the same question as SimonJ - although for the life of me, I can't trace the precise Forum on which I asked. However, some kind soul (& again I can't locate their reply) did give me the answer - for which I thank you most sincerely. Bottom line seems to be, if you have red symbols, you obviously can't use those particular features, & if you don't use them, you don't need 'em,

  32. Thank you. I also phoned up the closest Saab specialist to me and he said the exact same and quoted the same Mobil 1. Asked if any other grade can be used such as 5W-30 and he said absolutely not! I'm going to play it cool with them. I'm not one to shout and loose my temper as I know that achieves bugger all! Just providing them with the info and see what they come back with. Either way the oil will be getting changed asap! Don't want to run it any longer with the wrong oil in and if it comes to it I'll be picking up a bottle of Mobil 1 from ECP at the weekend and doing it myself. Thanks for you help guys. Will let you know how I get on!

  36. The EGR mods are continuing. Starting with the normal inards I took various cutting implements to the piston itself, then ground down the neck of the piston and also the large ramp at the bottom where the piston seats. The aim is to reduce the thickness of the material at the base where the hole is, as that's where the meth injector needs to be pointed upwards into the airstream. The EGR blanking plate will be drilled and tapped to take the nozzle and hopefully it'll be deep enough just to be flush with the base of the EGR "floor". If not I'll have to take some more material out of the floor itself. Hope this makes sense? It'll all become apparent when the bits are together

  39. Hello, I felt like posting this, as this forum was of very good help in pointing me out towards the good direction to find the problem. Even though a few threads had exactly the same symptoms my car had, none of them had a final post with the resolution, which left me doubting if I was replacing the right thing. I still remember when I first read these threads, I was thinking "that's easy, job done almost, I just need to read till the end", but then the posts would stop and nothing conclusive would be said. With this post I hope to help others too. So, here's my story: I drive a 2006 Fabia Combi 1.9 tdi (axr engine) with 203k but still in pretty good shape and running strong. Symptoms: A couple of weeks after I bought it - a few months, it started misfiring. Typically it would be: At the first moments some hesitation, hiccups, mainly in 4th/5th in low revs then - ESP/ASR light on and exhaust check light on too, and the engine running as if an injector was not working, running on 3 cylinders. Turning the engine off, and on, would make it work fine again (sometimes the exhaust light would remain on, without making any difference on the driving). A few times after that I noticed a pattern, it would only misfire when the car would be started from cold, and always at around the same temperature (80/85 degrees), 3 or 4 minutes from starting it. After reaching normal running temperature it would never happen. I read here and in other forums, and it seemed that the injectors wire loom or the EGR could be the cause. I did the EGR first. Replaced it, and as I was at it cleaned ASV, pipes and manifold (all pretty gunked up). But... It still misfired. A few days after it started getting worse, misfiring more often and at lower temperatures (still never misfired when warmed up). Then bought the wire loom, replaced it and... Yeah! Problem solved. Now it has been running perfect. And I hope it will run for many more miles. I hope this can be of some help to somebody. Thanks for all your useful threads and contributions. That saved me going to garages and also saved me quite a few quids. And most of all gave the satisfaction of solving it by my self and to get to know a bit better the car. PS: This is my very first post. If it's not in right place please let me know.

  41. I was thinking of a mix of different foods from around the world, Ideas would be; A light Thai green fish curry Tempura vegetables with a soy dip Fresh vegetable sushi marinated tofu, with noodles and veg steak tacos with a mango salad seasonal vegetarian dishes (I'm not a veggie but veggie food is my speciality) I'm not adverse to doing the normal grub but plenty of people are doing it and in the age of diets and healthy eating I feel it's not a sustainable area, These are some of the ideas knocking around my head, if I do proceed more ideas will follow, might even try some of them out at the next Briskoda national. Next step would be to find a decent Citroen Hy LWB van that doesn't cost 20k (and that's unfurnished and restored)

  43. Sounds like the same issue I had in Australia. The system knows where it can be used so refuses to work correctly. You can kind of get around it by making the system only use the cameras and not the Nav database as well. I started a thread in the Octavia forums on vwwatercooled.com.au a couple of months ago. http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f149/traffic-sign-recognition-any-luck-enabling-115969.html Also, I noticed in your first picture that you have 'Eco' in the maxidot. I've not seen that on mine. Does it only show Eco or does it also show the other driving modes? My RS only shows them in the top left of the main infotainment screen.

  44. It only takes a small percentage on a motorway or the odd one on an A road and you get the 'accordian effect'. It only takes one to brake sharply and the one behind (automatically at fault) to hit the car in front. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accordion_effect
