  4. Made the most of the weather today and did a full winter prep detail. Snow foam, Wash, de-tar, clay, polish, DA on specific scratches, wax, wheel seal and glass polish. Shame it went dark quickly though and ran out of time for applying tyre dressing and polishing the exhaust trims.

  8. A bit late to the party but , for what it's worth, I'll give you my experiences with tyres on my wife's 2014 3T Elegance Estate. It came on Continentals fitted to 18'' trinity alloys Lovely car if a bit soul-less for a old-French-car guy like me. The Superb's 18'' rims look pretty good , even if they did scream 'Drug Dealer' to me at first but I found these tyres a bit hard - although I didn't have much to compare it to. I just got the feeling that the suspension was essentially pretty good but the tyres weren't allowing the last bit of suppleness to come through. It also suffered 3 pothole-related punctures over local road defects that my 45 year old Renault simply ignores. We stuck with Continentals as replacements to keep a matching set on the car. However, despite the good test reviews for these tyres I had my doubts - very noisy ( particularly when they wear down a bit) and they wore quite rapidly. When all the tyres needed to be changed together I got a set of Vredestein Ultrac Satin as I have had a lot of success with this brand in the past. About the same as the Contis in road holding. Maybe slightly less 'sharp' but still grippy and they feel progressive . The big difference is in the lower noise level and the better ride. Certainly less sharp, crashy reaction to bumps compared to the original equipment. £20 a corner cheaper as a bonus. I also have a set of 16'' alloys ( actually VW Passat wheels) with Continental TS850 winter tyres which I put on the car in November and take off in February. We don't bother telling the insurance company because this size of tyre is actually listed as an option in the handbook so there is no deviation from standard spec. The 205 55 16's extra height of sidewall certainly does help the ride . It's comfortable on the 18'' rims , the 16''s make it just that bit better. Not a huge difference but noticeable. If that was with Summer instead of Winter tyres, the difference may be greater. I've never been one for budget tyres as sometimes they aren't that much cheaper and there is no way of testing them. You can watch a TV to assess the picture before you buy it, you can even try cheese out before you commit yourself to a whole 250grams of the stuff. But if you buy a set of tyres and get it wrong you end up wishing the next 20000 miles away. I've had cars that came on budget tyres and I've usually driven on them until they've worn out and I've always gone for a branded replacement. Some of the budgets have been OK but shopping around can often get you a big named tyre on line for the same as a budget from your local tyre fitter. I don't subscribe to the view that all budgets are ditchfinders and I'm perfectly happy giving budget tyres a go when they're already on there- I just don't buy them. Having said that I have just bought 2 sets of secondhand alloy wheels for the Fabia base model I inherited from my late Dad. One set came with 61/2mm tread DMack Wintersafe and the other set have nearly new Westlake and Landsail Chinese tyres. Am I going to use them? You bet. Am I going put budgets on again when they wear out? Probably not!

  10. BUT, according to my mother: It is all worth it because we will get our sovereigns back (or something like that), we will be able to control our borders (in some way more than we do now), we will get inches and pounds back, get rid of those white foreigners and be able to spot the real foreigners better and concentrate on dealing with them. We will get the commonwealth back and rule the waves again. ANYONE can afford £4300 extra a year from their savings and money lost to the NHS is going to be saved because there wont be so many nurses cos they will have gone home. AND the EU is going to give us ALL the money back we ever spent with them just so they can sell us cars. (She reads the Daily Mail btw) Now I KNOW not all leavers are Mail readers; but Murdock sells this carp to many people. I worked with a real nice guy who said he only read the Mail for the sport coverage and knew the paper was full of rubbish. BUT he seemed to agree with Murdock on most things too. Taking Mail readers out of the equation; Yes; many many people had real and intense feelings about European workers in this country. I get that. Is that acceptable? Of course not. If people are made to feel that way, something has gone seriously wrong. What went wrong? Well personally I believe the money they brought in was used in the wrong way. Part of it should have been spent on extra services. But it wasn't spent that way. Hey, if you had to put up with a new house mate who happened to bring with them a real nice coffee maker, massive TV and a sister who you really fancied - thier odd accent doesn't seem so bad. Europe's fault? Probably not. Is leaving the EU the ONLY solution to this? Really? Of course not. There are loads of other things we could try. Maybe we should have tried them first. The UK is not perfect, it's sometimes fun to point out its failings. Nowhere is perfect. BUT the UK has genuine strengths and I certainly do not denigrate patriotism. Neither do I think it's us or them. Every country has to trade, protectionism has always been the blight of co-operation, the seed of mistrust and often the prequel to wars. Has the EU stopped wars? Who can know for sure. But personally I feel a bit safer within than without. It's not hard to imagine a few years from now and our PM claiming that we are going hungry because of X country and we get more and more rhetorical about something unrelated 'they' have done. It can be so easy to blame someone else and end up in real strife with them. I have worked for small and large organisations. Public sector, private sector and non-profit. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage of the massive organisations like the EU is that they can be extremely slow in changing direction - just like a big ship. Its bad at reacting in an emergency compared with a small organisation or small ship. BUT it is extreamly predictable, just like a big ship, it changes direction very slowly and everyone can see where it is headed. A small ship can change direction and cause a crash and sink within seconds. A big ship can't make that kind of mistake. I seriously think many people are frightened of the EU, not because of what it is doing right now - but what they think it MAY do in the future (EU army, federalisation etc.). BUT it can't do anything quickly. The EU is NOT perfect. Far from it. But do I believe that the EU is ill-designed, dysfuntional, furiously resistant to change and unnecessary for most international cooperation outside the realm of trade? No. Its not that I think the EU represents everything that’s good in the world BUT on balance, I personally believe it is better to change something from inside than from outside. Change with the EU will never be fast, but it will be extreamly predictable. The EU is highly likely to continue with or without us. If people don't like parts of the EU, we certainly won't be able to change it from outside. Likewise, the idea that the UK leaving will end the whole EU project, is unlikely. Even if it DID end, something would eventually replace it. And even if that something was perfect and we wanted to be part of it - would they want us? The people that messed up the last project?

  13. Probably nothing other than being the Highest Profile Motorsport Rally in the UK being a round of the FIA World Championship and the round where the FIA World Rally Championship was decided. Obviously not real rallying when it is just a competition for those that are at the top of their sport after starting at club level and maybe National Rally events etc and those on the way to the top. Nothing that David Boggie or other 'real rally car drivers' aspired to when a younger men or woman. Obviously there was the WRC2, 3 & Junior WRC drivers participating in the event that was called The Dayinsure Wales Rally GB. http://wrc.com/en http://wrc.com

  18. On my way out to get the rusty sill checked out. 80's goodness So the speedo repair didn't work, read zero the whole time. Need to investigate that more. I've booked the car in for rust repair soon, plus a wheel alignment and re-bleed of the brakes this Saturday. The brakes are really spongy and I've bled them twice. WIll get a pro to do them There seems to be an issue with idling once warmed up, revs drop way down and the car stalls. Other than that it feels so good to drive it! It makes an amazing noise, steering feels good, it makes me grin

  21. Having owned various VeeDubs - from a Beetle to a Scirocco to a Transporter - I am about to upgrade my life... I'm getting a MkIII Octavia Estate vRS 4x4 with DSG. Deciding on an Octavia Estate was easy, deciding which model to go turned out to be much harder as I really wanted a petrol 4x4 but of course there's no such thing (at the moment anyway). I also thought I'd get a manual but then I drove a Scout with DSG, which changed my mind about the transmission as well as showing me the benefits of 184PS compared to 150 (never knew that PS was German for BHP before either). So that ruled out everything except the Scout and the vRS so had to try one... just so much more planted and precise than the Scout. Decision made !

  22. Just done the 6 speed conversion into my estate again! Different car, as I stupidly sold the last one in a time of weakness! :( at least it was a lot easier this time, despite me forgetting to remove some important parts that were needed from the VRS I took the gearbox from. Ended up costing more because I had to buy those parts new from TPS. Its well worth the change, so anyone thinking of putting a VRS gearbox in their Fabia, these are the things you will need; (I may have done a list before) -Gearbox -gear cables and tower -starter motor and bolts -drive shafts and all bolts -Bell housing bolts -Flywheel bolts -pressure plate bolts (they look the same but -the 6sp clutch uses smaller ones) -clutch kit for 6sp -Concentric slave cylinder -clutch pipe (from master cylinder to slave) -dog bone mount -VRS Speedo (the Vrs takes its speed from the wheels, where as the 5 speed box takes its speed from the plug on the gearbox) And then swap all those bits

  24. You know, even coming from a petrol waster, I can see your point! This harks back to too many people only seeing the excellent MPG that a Diesel engine can give, then using them for maybe a couple of 4 mile journeys a day! A tricky one, a product is brought to market that can be economic to run wrt fuel usage but not so handy for short journeys only. The users must bear some of the responsibility for how their chosen method of transport is now been viewed from an environmental impact point of view? Edit:- actually another piece of enlightenment from BBC News today is, if you are a non smoker and stroke a pussy that lives in a smoker's house, you will increase your chances of ending up with cig smoke related problems - that BBC News stuff is amazing??? I'm guessing stroking a dog or parrot is okay though, or maybe they are saving that news for another day.

  28. Everyone thought it was the VW monster budget that won the titles, but clearly he can win in a privateer car without any works support at all. Mind you he was even too fast for Loeb at Citroen, hence he was allowed to leave. On another tack, I expect to soon see Ford advertising taking all the credit for something they had absolutely no part in, either the RAC win or the WRC or both.

  30. Update: I went for 4x Eagle F1 Assy 2's (they don't seem to do the Assy 3 variant in the right size yet) at a total whack of £654 from Blackcircles, fitted, which was about £150 cheaper all in than Michelin or Bridgestone. As we're having to fork out for a new boiler as well this month because ours failed 3 weeks ago I was ordered not to buy anything that wasn't absolutely necessary so the Goodyear's are the best I could afford this time. First impressions aren't all that different on my local roads with normal tarmac but I did notice they were a bit quieter on the concrete bits on the way to the mother in laws last night so that's a decent start. As the last ones were unevenly worn resulting in a £25 charge for tracking to be adjusted and had differing tread depths from 3.5mm to sweet FA I'm definitely seeing increased ability to stop already but will wait for a good British downpour before I commit to saying they're any better in the wet than anything else I've used.

  39. Well first two non-cosmetic mods. Installed my new Dashcam; a Nextbase 412GW. I did have a cheap twin camera dooberry that was okay but it was 4 years old, the picture quality wasn't great and it relied on a capacitor rather than a battery to shut down properly. The new unit has a 1440 line camera and superior night-time performance. It also has a magnetic, quick-release bracket so it can be dropped in my pocket. It's wired in with a genuine Nextbase hardwire kit. I thought about a generic kit but the official version came with two piggyback fuses. In the end I slotted it in an unused fuse slot rather than borrow a different circuit. The other item is a 12V to USB module. 12 volts DC in, 2 x 5 volts DC out. The output for both together is rated at 3 amps, which is more than enough to charge two smartphones simultaneously. I was able to feed the module through the gap between the "ashtray" and the ventilation controls. It was a bugger of a job due to limited access behind the console but I applied an unusually high amount of patience. The module is stuck on the back of the console next to where the passenger's knee would be. I used another piggyback fuse adapter (another unused circuit) as the power source. At the moment both items are on permanently but I'm not two worried. I do enough mileage each week to keep the battery fully charged and I don't leave anything plugged in to the newly added USB sockets. If things change then I'll out the dashcam and charging module on a single fuse point and use a battery saver module. Everything is attached with insulated spade connectors so fitting an additional module will be easy. Accessing the internal fuse panel is a doddle. Trim panels are easily removed, as is the glovebox cover. Putting the glovebox back? I have been tempted to forget about the little damper more than once. My next project is to add another 12V to USB module in the back for my little mate's gadgets. Not sure where I'll tap in for power. I think the 12V socket in the boot is switched with the ignition and as we have a tendency to transport a coolbox on a regular basis it might me best to route from there. If anyone else has done this, advice and suggestions are welcomed.

  44. spent a couple of days driving my work's company car. A 66plate mercedes a140 diesel. It was nice and smooth, the clutch was really light, but was totally gutless, spongy and the steering was numb. As I sat back in my car, the sparco seats hugging me as if the car had missed me. I started it up and was glad to hear the rattles from the smf. It took a few minutes to familiarise myself with the clutch pedal as it is much heavier than the merc. It felt great having to put more effort into every gear change. It felt more rewarding. the stiffened suspension inviting me to tackle the corners and I smiled. the merc was nice, but reminded me why I much prefer the noisy 12 year old skoda
