  1. Hi,

Yeh, I found that diagram on the Parrot site.

As per the diagram, the parrot loom has three connectors (all very clearly labelled Mute1, Mute2 and Mute3) but none of the wires actually go anywhere when it gets to the Pioneer loom. The pins on the parrot ISO connector don't meet up with any pins on the Pioneer loom. That's my problem. The Pioneer mute wire is just loose and doesn't go to any pins.

So I manually hooked up the Pioneer mute wire - to the single mute wire coming from the Pioneer box, but it makes - - MUTE - - come on the stereo constantly...

Thinking about it, I think I've just realised what the issue is, perhaps... on that diag the Mute is also bridged across to the loom coming from the car. I bet that's permanently earthing the mute connection and stopping it from working properly...

  2. Hi Andrew,

When it mutes the radio, does it say Call, Phone, or something in the radio when you get a call? as it should, if not it is not muting the radio properly, ie, its not muting the radio but its just cutting the sound when you get the call, and can do some harm to the radio if not muted.

On the parrot wiring (as you say) there is a wire marked as mute, but if I remember there is three wires, try the other two !

    Radiotwo

    Hi,

    Thanks for that.

Without the mute wire connected - when it mutes the radio it doesn't say mute on the screen. When the wire was connected, it said mute on-screen constantly.

On the parrot wiring, none of the 3 in-built mute wires actually go anywhere on the Pioneer harness. The Pioneer harness just has a mute wire that isn't connected to anything. I connected them using a Scotch-lock connector, which is what made the mute come on constantly.

  3. Hi,

    This isn't for a Skoda - it's for my gf's Mk1 Clio.

I had a spare Parrot Bluetooth I removed from my Fabia, so decided to put it into her ancient N-reg Clio... just for kicks really. She already has an after market Pioneer CD stereo.

The parrot has an ISO connector - so one end plugs into the standard car stereo wiring, and the other plugs into the wiring adapter that came with her Pioneer.

Now the Parrot wiring harness has a mute connection, which I hooked up to the mute going into the back of the Pioneer. But when connected, it mutes the stereo constantly - whether a call is being made or not.

I disconnected the mute wire, and everything works great. Music comes through the speakers normally, then when a call comes through the audio is muted and you can hear the call.

Is it OK to leave the mute connection disconnected?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  4. very nice  . if you don't mind me asking which pioneer headunit is it and how much did it cost?

also how would you rate the audio quality with it on the standard speakers when compared to the standard symphony headunit

It's a Pioneer AVH-3300BT, and the RRP is £500 but if you shop around you can get them for £300. If you don't need the hands-free, there's also the AVH-2300DVD, which (from what I can gather) is exactly the same but without bluetooth.

Audio quality on the standard speakers is pretty good really. In fact, a guy who I work with who is into audiophile hi-fi kit commented on how good it sounded, so it must be good! Certainly plenty better than the Skoda Symphony unit, and plenty good enough for me.

Very smart, how`d you get the skoda badge on there?

It's just a feature of the unit to have a customisable background. Just put any picture on the memory card or USB stick and you can set it as the background.

  5. Just thought I'd post up a few pics of my new double din.

For anyone thinking about fitting one - I would say go for it, I love mine - BUT it's the hardest stereo install I've ever done. I'm no professional, but I understand the basics of car electrics and know my way around a screw driver... I've fitted loads of stereos before and it normally takes me about 15-30 minutes, or slightly longer if I have to route any wires for a bluetooth mic or ipod kit. But this thing took the biscuit. Well over 3 hours of cursing. And I have lots of cuts too. Either Skoda didn't make the slot wide enough, or the Pioneer cage is too big! But, it's in there at last...

The unit itself is very good. I know a lot of people on here have the JVC double din units - but I didn't want one of those as I didn't like the menu system, and they sit quite proud of the dash. This pioneer fits lovely and flush. The bluetooth is excellent. The screen is excellent and the DVD functionality a sort-of-cool gimmick, but quite why anyone would want to watch a DVD in their car I'm not sure. I wish it would read M3U playlists off the SD card, but you can't have everything.

Excuse the picture quality from my phone:

  6. Hi,

I would like a double-din unit for my Fabia, but there are a few to choose from and none are perfect...

This would be my perfect unit:

    CD player

    FM radio

    DVD playback

    Customisable button illumination

    Large colour touchscreen

    Bluetooth hands-free

    SD Card reader

Rear USB (I don't like having wires hanging out my dash)

    User-friendly and intuitive GUI

    Understated OEM looks

    Removable facia

Ability to read cover art and m3u playlists from USB/SD media

Pioneer (as I have always had Pioneer kit before and I like it)

    Around £300-£400

Predictably, with such a specific list of requirements, nothing fits the bill exactly. But making a few compromises, there are a few contenders:

    The JVC AVX-830

    CD player - YES

    FM radio - YES

    DVD playback - YES

    Customisable button illumination - YES

    Large colour touchscreen - YES

Bluetooth hands-free - YES - although reviews say the microphone is ropey

    SD Card reader - NO

Rear USB (I don't like having wires hanging out my dash) - YES

User-friendly and intuitive GUI - ? Looks a bit ropey

Understated OEM looks - It sticks out a fair bit and has a crappy looking 'chin'

    Removable facia - YES

Ability to read cover art and m3u playlists from USB/SD media - Don't think so

Pioneer (as I have always had Pioneer kit before and I like it) - Obviously NO

    Around £300-£400 - YES at £370 ish

    The Pioneer AVH-3300BT

    CD player - YES

    FM radio - YES

    DVD playback - YES

    Customisable button illumination - YES

Large colour touchscreen - YES - although smallest of the 3

    Bluetooth hands-free - YES

    SD Card reader - YES

Rear USB (I don't like having wires hanging out my dash) - NO - front only

User-friendly and intuitive GUI - YES

    Understated OEM looks - YES

    Removable facia - NO

Ability to read cover art and m3u playlists from USB/SD media - NO

Pioneer (as I have always had Pioneer kit before and I like it) - YES

Around £300-£400 - YES, the cheapest at £299 ish

    The Sony XAV-70BT

    CD player - YES

    FM radio - YES

    DVD playback - YES

Customisable button illumination - NO - white only

    Large colour touchscreen - YES

    SD Card reader - NO

Rear USB (I don't like having wires hanging out my dash) - YES

User-friendly and intuitive GUI - YES - seems to be the nicest looking of all, although reviews say it is slow

Understated OEM looks - NO - it sticks out from the dash a mile

    Removable facia - YES

Ability to read cover art and m3u playlists from USB/SD media - Don't think so

Pioneer (as I have always had Pioneer kit before and I like it) - Obviously NO

Around £300-£400 - YES, but most expensive at £400

  7. I've just had a thought - do you need Windows to use the STS?

I had always imagined the STS would just come up as an external storage device for you to copy the files to/from, but looking at a video of someone using it on YouTube, it looks like you have to use some proprietary software to communicate with it...?

I use Ubuntu at home, and at work, and don't easily have access to a Windows machine...

I don't live far from Mansfield, and was planning to drive down there to get it anyway, so hopefully it won't matter... I guess that once it's set up you don't need to plug the STS into your computer at all?

  8. Hi,

As per title, please could you give me a price for a Whiteline RARB and Eibach Pro-Kit springs for a Fabia 6Y vRS delivered.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

P.S. - I couldn't find the Whiteline RARB on your site. Similar to the recent thread about JOM coilovers, I assume that's because it's out of stock? I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but as a web developer, I just want to mention that it's not good to have the product page disappear like that when something goes out of stock. I don't know if you know this already, but you risk losing your SEO for that page if Google re-crawls your site, and visitors expecting to see the product will get confused by an error page. It would be much better to keep the page there, but add an 'out of stock' message or something if that's possible.

  9. Hi all,

Time for me to have a Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen moment...

I have just re-decorated my room at home. It's going to be a few years until me and the misses will be able to afford a place of our own, so for now I've got myself a little bachelor pad at home! It's quite nice really, my parents are very unobtrusive and I get on with them well so there's no point moving out until we can comfortably afford our own house. It's all very modern. Very plain with gloss black furniature, a simple dark leather sleigh bed and white walls. It's a bit clinical, and not to everyone's tastes, but I like things to be clean and plain.

Anyway, background over - in the same vane as the Top Gear V8 coffee table, I have decided I would like a car related objets d'art. A salvaged old car part I can get cheaply from a scrappers or ebay, which I can clean up and put on my window sill. It should be interesting to look at in itself, and not look too much like an old car part. Any ideas?

  10. Try to insist that it is repaired if it's not too badly damaged. Insurers try to write cars off to keep thier admin and repair cost down. Get a quote independently and notify your insurer.

Interesting you say that. I'm not sure I would want a heavily damaged car back as I would loose confidence in it... if someone bumped into me, I'd actually prefer them to write it off.

  11. Well we could only speculate as to the cause of the damage, just like you. It's probably just hit a badger or something. If it's only cosmetic, not too much to worry about. Having said that, if you're not in a rush to buy and you notice faults with it, leave it. It will always bug you and be on your mind and there are plenty of good VRS models to be had out there.

I would be more concerned about potential underlying damage. If you are not sure what to look for, take someone along who does or get an independant check. They can seem pricy, but it's not a lot when you compare it to the price you are paying for the car, or the potential cost of having to fix a problem and/or being left with an unsaleable wreck.

Lastly, I would say just because it's a dealer, don't expect it's any better than any other VRS you see. I learned the hard way and nearly bought an absolute shed of a Civic Type-R from a Honda main dealer a few years ago. I assumed all would be hunky dory because the car was only a few years old and it was 'Honda approved' - but it had been in a nasty accident and badly repaired.

Oh, and being a pedant, I can't help but say I think you meant foresight, not hindsight :p.

  12. If the kit can be had for £300-£400 then £350-£250 for fitting sounds like a lot of money. I paid £150ish for a clutch swap last time I think

    Matt

I didn't do a lot of shopping round, but the going rate for the Clutch and DMF kit alone seemed to be £550 when I had a quick look. So I think £650 fitted isn't bad - especially when you consider that's from a very highly regarded specialist too, who have a waiting list as long as your arm.

I don't know where the prices of £300 are coming from. If anyone knows of a reputable company selling a Sachs or LUK kit for that much, I'd like to know.

I wouldn't fit that unbranded ebay clutch to my car if you paid me!

  13. Cheers for that.

Where have you seen the price of £300? What would you recommend brand wise? Sachs? LUK? Or just get a direct replacement from TPS (but I'm guessing that will just be a VAG branded Sachs/LUK anyway)? I might just see what my local VAG specialists charge for supply and fit.

On a similar note, what do you reckon about the EGR? How bad does it have to get before you swap one of them? I was gonna DIY swap mine, as it's covered everything nearby with a nice coating of gunky black oil, but now I think I might have to fork out for a DMF, I'm wondering if I might leave it a little longer...

  14. My DMF is on its way out, has been for the past year or so.

I've noticed recently it's got a bit worse.

You don't notice it much while on the move, but there is a quite strong pulsing when sat at idle, and I can feel it through the clutch pedal when taking up power.

The local VAG specialist I use for repairs seem to be of the mindset of waiting until it catastrophically falls to bits, but it's really starting to annoy me now, and I'm getting the car mapped in the next couple of weeks so that's only going to accelerate the failure...

What do you all think? Replace it now/soon or wait a bit longer?

  15. Right, my EGR valve has been ****ing oil since I got the car, and it's starting to annoy me now. I know people will say go the delete route, but I've already decided I'd rather stick OEM thanks.

How easy a DIY job is it to replace? It looks pretty straight forward as it's on the top of the engine. I assume it can all be done without jacking the car up? Any fiddly bolts?

    Gonna get this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2005-08-SKODA-FABIA-VRS-1-9-TDI-EGR-VALVE-038131501AN-/380305131703?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item588bf3c8b7

What else is needed? Any special tools, replacement gaskets etc?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  16. Eep, I'm from that area, I know the road very, very well. For those that don't, it has become a bit of a local unofficial measure of how quick your car is - what speed it will do up/at the top of slack. And people do treat it like a race track!

Who's fault was it? I hope there were no casualties!

Out of interest who is it that you work for?

  17. Hi all,

Considering getting a new head unit for my Fabia vRS, but I've been struggling to find something that matches all my (probably slightly unrealistic) requirements...

    I want:

    • Double din
    • OEM look and green illumination
    • Bluetooth
    • USB connectivity - ideally on the rear, who wants usb wires trailing everywhere or a pen-drive sticking out of their dash?
    • SD card functionality
    • Good brand (have always had Pioneer in the past)
    • Budget isn't set in stone, but around the £300 mark would be good. Certainly no more than £500.

What would people recommend? Pics of the units in-situ in a Fabia would be good...

    Edit:

Just want to add - one thing that puts me off most units, is they have jutting out bits. Sounds a bit weird, but if possible, I want a unit that sits as flush as possible to the original dash...
