stupid front window jammed wide open *!@

Recommended Posts

Just lowered my driver window and it jammed half way open. Gave it a bit of pressure while pressing the down switch.Retracted all the way in and now will not come up no matter what (If anyone suggest viagra, I wont be happy)

Luckily tomorrow's a holiday - any suggestions on how to proceed or would I be better off taking it to the dealers for repair??

Cheers

Bas

mines happened a month ago... your window regulator will be knackered :(

not good news bud the part is 77 quid and is a biatch to try and fit... ive just done mine... dealer charges 65 quid to fit (should have went there)

absolute nightmare.

In the meantime whip the doorcard off and wedge a bit of wood in to hold the window up (i drove like this for a month lol)

Mega pain

its the cheap plastic holders that are on the runners of the window that snap and thus chew the cabling...

heres a rough guide

Pretty much what he said...

The exact same thing happened to me last year with my old fabia, part was quite pricey (around £100 if I remember right, but I might not...). And it was a pig to fit.

It was the passenger side that went on me, so while I waited for the bits to arrive I stripped the door's internals and jammed a piece of wood in place to hold it all in place for a couple of weeks. Cue much laughter from my ever-sympathetic passengers :(

Good luck.

Managed to raise the window by pulling on the glass and pressing the switch at the same time.

It seems to be holding up, but have added some tape to keep it that way for the time being. The button will happily retract the glass but is stuck raising it..

Have a service coming up soon, so will ask the dealer to make sure he has a window regulator in stock......

Don't panic. If it came up with a bit of help and the bits are turning, it is more likely that it has come free from the two clamps which hold the bottom of the glass. They are really quite small considering the size of the window. The glass sits in two carriers with a rubber strip between the metal and the glass. A bolt tightens the the clamp. Given the temperature changes in your area, it seems possible that constant expansion and contraction have loosened the clamps. The window then sticks a little at either front or back and the clamps pull free.

First thing to do is tape the window up so it can't drop. If you take off the door lining it is possible to see the clamps and the bolts through two small holes (You need to move the control up/down to get the level right - it has the window open an inch or so when al is fixed). . You'll see immediately if the clamps are loose. Unscrew, a bit and gently lower the window into the carriers. It must be in the right place or it will stick - probably can see where it's been as there will be marks on the glass. Tighten, check and lubricate. If you have problem swith this then you'll have to take off the aluminium carrier panel (may be riveted on your car), but if you can leave it alone so much the better. HTH

  • 3 weeks later...

Opened up the door today - was indeed one of the plastic clips - cracked open.

Ideal fix would be to see if my VW dealership has the metal VW golf regulator repair kit available (Part no. 1JM-898-462-A) and is the same size as the fabia's. In the meantime the clip is epoxied and will be dremelled to fit... I'll take it in tmrw and see about the metal clips.....

As a positive, can fit some more soundproofing material inside the door proper.....

I'd prefer to use metal self-tapping sheet screws to close up the carrier - just in case I have to get in there again. Drilling rivets sucks....

Oh and Ross, managed to get 10m throwing the plastic bracket....:D

Found the metal clips at the local VW dealer - the US price is about $45 - these jokers wanted about 50 quid for them! I can get a new regulator in total for about 60 quid, although most likely with the plastic clips....

Gonna give the epoxied clip a trial first....

progress - changed the regulator re-using the old motor. Had to invest in a BF rivet gun ("lazy tong" type) that could handle the 6.4mm ally pop-rivets (about 10 quid locally).

As usual Ross was right - the wires were twisted up like crazy inside the reel. Given the difficulty removing and re-rivetting not worth messing about with replacement cable, etc....

I just had this happen tonight on my octy front passenger window .

Windows were foggy so I lowered the fronts and raised them again only to hear a horrible grinding type noise and one stuck window...

Removed the door inner when I got home (what a pig getting off the handle inner - haynes says "lever off with a screwdriver" probably gonna need a new cover when it's fixed I reckon!) and have chocked it with a bit of wood since the length of wire that fell out in my hand was indeed all mangled up and twisted.

Anyone know the rough cost for having it replaced? (fitted and supply only.)

LJ Matt, I don't know the cost of the Octy regulator, but the Fabia ones are around the £60 mark from Skoda.

I purchased one of the VW Golf regulator kits from a local VW dealers for £35, and is a stock item. The cable and other bits are different, so they can go in the bin! The 2 clips are very close to fitting. I have attacked mine with an angle grinder to slim them down a bit. I chopped some bits off the plastic inserts. They fit and slide up and down okay, but I need to sort out how to hold the cable in the clip, as I ground the lip away which stops the cable coming out. May try araldite once the cable is in......Once these are fitted, it should never break again (as long as the araldite holds!) :)

Ouch!

I get the impression mine's gonna be similar inside as I removed a length of snapped wire and a guide tube last night but the motor still makes a horrible sound if I try to operate it.

Sounds like the remaining cable's proper mangled :(

I'll post back later when I've had a quote from the dealer since after reading the guide on replacing it last night there's no way I'm trying THAT :rofl:.

Pity I won't be getting it fixed this month, no thanks to Mr Brown and Mr Darling deciding I've got to be robbed blind for both car and bike tax this month :finger::finger::finger:
