Winter Tyres, Rims & Snow Chains

Snow chains can be fitted onto the front or rear wheels and if necessary both front and rear at the same time.

Due to technical reasons Skoda state that only the rear wheels can be fitted with snow chains if the Yeti has the standard tyre sizes of 215/60 R 16 or 225/50 R17. Note: obviously fitting snow chains just on the rear axle is only suitable for 4x4 versions.

If you wish to fit snow chains to the front wheels then it is only permissible by changing the wheels to one of the following rim and tyre combinations (remember all four wheels must be fitted with the same rim and tyre size and tyre designation i.e. summer or winter for reasons of safety).

Alternative Rim & Tyre sizes

6J x16 ET50 - 205/55 R16 94H M+S (91H acceptable for 2wd 90kW engine) (91T acceptable for 2wd 77 & 81kW engines) (Not GreenLine II)

7J x16 ET45 - 205/55 R16 94H M+S (91H acceptable for 2wd 90kW engine) (91T acceptable for 2wd 77 & 81kW engines)

6J x17 ET45 - 205/50 R17 93H M+S (Note: Skoda Flash alloys 6J 17 ET45 are available as a dealer supplied winter fit option) (Not GreenLine II)

Note: Snow chain links and locks must not be larger than 12 mm.

Warning: When fitting snow chains on the front and rear axle at the same time, the maximum speed is limited to 50 km/h.

4874359185_a77dc86221_z.jpg

Note: Chains can be difficult to fit if space around the wheel is limited and they should be removed when back on tarmac otherwise you can cause damage to both chains and tyres.

Alternatively a product such as the Thule K-Summit snow chain could be used; easier to fit in most cases and as they do not wrap behind the tyre, can potentially be used were conventional chains cannot due to clearance issues. However these types of system can be expensive.

Also a fairly new product on the market is the Michelin Easy Grip composite snow chain.

51TMo%2B5FifL._SS500_.jpg

Appears to be approved as a snow chain and could possible be used where clearance is limited between wheel and surrounding structure.

easygrip

Another option is the use of Snow Socks; they are not designed to be an alternative to snow chains but more an aid if you get caught out in a snowfall.

Note: they will wear out very quickly if used on tarmac, and are infective for use in very heavy snowfalls or steep inclines or descents.

Warning: Snow Socks are not a legal alternative to snow chains in Alpine regions where the carrying of suitable chains is mandatory.

Winter Tyre Pressure (edit)

Owners manual states this should be set at 0.2bar ABOVE the tyre pressure given on the fuel filler flap.

Note:

tyre pressure given on the fuel filler flap for 215/60 R16 tyres also applies to 205/55 R16 tyre size (plus 0.2bar for winter tyres)

tyre pressure given on the fuel filler flap for 225/50 R17 tyres also applies to 205/50 R17 tyre size (plus 0.2bar for winter tyres)

All Season Tyres

Can provide an alternative to changing from summer to winter tyres as they can be used throughout the year. However some view them as a 'jack of all trades master of non', although in tests performed by ADAC (2010) Goodyears Vector 4 Season tyre outperformed some winter options.

To fit factory rims (Not available as a factory option) try:

Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons

SUV 4x4 Tyres

There are available but in limited tread patterns and brands, a number of 4x4 predominately road orientated tyres in the 215/60 R16 size. For example try:

Goodyear Wrangler HP - 215/60 R16 95H (All Season)

Michelin Latitude Tour HP - 215/60 95H

Yokohama Geolander H/T-S G051 - 215/60 95H (Note: Yokohama provide a number of tread patterns in this size)

Speed Ratings (Max) & Load Index

T - 118MPH or 190Km/h

H - 130MPH or 210Km/h

V - 150MPH or 240Km/h

W -168MPH or 270Km/h

Minimum Load index for Yeti is 94 (except winter 205/50 R17 at 93H and 205/55 R16 for 2wd 77 & 81kW engines at 91T)

Tyre & Rim Storage (edit)

Local tyre fitter gave the following advise; tyres on rim then lay flat one on top of the other, keep them out of direct sunlight and ventilated so they don't sweat. His view was that storing tyres on rim in the as fitted position could flat spot them over time.

This is supported by Michelin My link (Link provided by grahamar; thanks)

You can use a purpose made Wheel Rim Tree to store your wheels Westfalia (Again link provided by grahamar; thanks)

Alternatively I've put a square of thick ply on the garage floor with a 2cm slot cut to the middle to allow air in underneath and placed the tyres on this with a light cotton dust sheet over the top of the stack.

Prepared the wheels for storage by removing stones etc. from the tread then cleaning and drying the wheels and checking pressures.

Jacking positions (kindly provided by Fred_Bristol)

For those of us not disposed to lying on our backs looking under cars, the approximate positions of the Yeti jacking points (on the 1.2 at least) are:

Front: approximately 6 cm / 2.5 ins from the back edge of the front wheel arch

Back| approximately 29 cm / 11.5 ins from the front edge of the rear wheel arch

That's a really helpful summary. I intend to get some of the Nokians once the monster is delivered. I have a set of ex-Scout 16 inch alloys, which I am hoping will fit.

Hi,

I found this website, wheel related stuff, helpful too ...

My link

Of interest to me was this note:

When installing new wheels you should re-torque the wheel lugs after driving for 50 miles or so, in case the clamping load has changed. This occurs because of metal compression/elongation and heat stress. You will also verify the accuracy of the original installation. Be sure to wait for the wheels to cool down to ambient temperature before rechecking the torque value (Do NOT torque the lugs while the wheels are hot). Loosen and retighten to value, in sequence - simply repeat the same torque procedures as described here.

Might explain why some Tyre fitters say you can come back ina week to have the bolts re-torque'd./checked.

Excellent reference!

Should anyone wish to use winter tyres on 16" Rims instead of the 225/50R17 but retain the same or similar Diameter, then according to the tyre computer a couple of alternative sizes on 16"

Tyre 225/50R17

Radius 328.4

Diameter 656.8

Circumference 2063.4

Rev/km 485.0

Tyre 205/55R17

Radius 328.6

Diameter 657.3

Circumference 2065.0

Rev/km 484.0

Tyre 205/60R16

Radius 326.2

Diameter 652.4

Circumference 2049.6

Rev/km 488.0

Tyre 205/65R16

Radius 336.4

Diameter 672.9

Circumference 2114.0

Rev/km 473

Tyre 215/60R16

Radius 332.2

Diameter 664.4

Circ 2087.3

Rev/km 479

Their is some advantage using narrower winter tyres with higher profile on a smaller rim. It is important for me to retain ride hight and underbelly clearance so I will not be using tyres that have a smaller diameter than standard. This is because of where I live which is off road and need to drive over obstacles including ruts. I may even buy a second 17" set of wheels instead of the 16" and then use that same size winter tyres as standard.

I realise that the smaller over all diameters where chosen for snow chain clearances but Spike Spider Snow Chains will fit original wheel and tyre size without issue so the distributors claim. Interestingly the closes match on the tyre calculator with the 205 mm winter tyre width that Skoda recommend is the 205/55R17.

One must also remember that these figures are nominal. I have a fair bit of experience with much, much larger wheel tyre sizes for large 4x4 machines where visual differences between manufacturers using the same so called sizes, the physical size difference can be very marked indeed making it impractical to mix tyres from different manufacturers and even tyres from the same manufacturer but of a different type. I would suspect that this might also be so of much smaller tyres that we have here though the physical differences might not be so noticeable visually but % wise they may well be.

What I am suggesting above is not to assume that all manufacturers tyres of the same nominal size will be the same. I personally would not recommend mixing and matching tyres, especially with a 4x4 vehicle that relies on such accurate data from wheel sensors going to an ECU that makes decisions. it is also possible that the sizes that I have shown might not be available and may also not be recommended fit by the tyre associations.

I have a set of VW steel rims in 7 x 16 ET45 and shd with 215/55-16 winter tyres for my Passat.

Anyone think these would be an option for my new Yeti SE?

John

Hi John,

should be OK as they are half way between the standard 16" 215/60 and the winter 205/55. Would check with your insurer though as they are not a recognised tyre size for the Yeti before using them on the road.

Thanks The Plumber for the link to this helpful thread started by your goodself.

The tyres fitted to our recently delivered Yeti Elegance are Goodyear Excellence 225 50R 17 94W - by now means cheap and we guess they may be available at less that £167-91 home fitted from one internet dealer,

We understand the input that suggests that an all weather tyre can be a compromise but how many UK users really need a W rating tyre capable of 160 mph/270kph?

On a Canadian website it was suggested the Michelin X Ice had good all round characteristics and could be left on the vehicle permanently. It was suggested that this would be a better option that say a Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread all weather tyre.

We also see that run flat tyres are an option available in the Goodyear Excellence range and we wonder if UK users might find this more useful than a rating to cover illegal speeds?

For a Sport Utility Vehicle we are somewhat concerned that the dealer did not discuss with us our expectations and use of the Yeti and guided us to the selection of the best tyres for our useage.

We see that most options are factory packed but surely a wheel change to the option most suitable for the purchaser could be a dealer effected change if the vehicle is purchased from stock or stock in transit?

The reason why the dealership would not discus tyres with you is because in all likely hood they will not have a clue. This is Skodas first modern 4x4 or soft roader crossover or what ever title it holds, they do not have experience of this sort of thing. 99.9% of owners will never really take it off road or if they do it will be a one off or perhaps to tow a caravan to a pitch. Llanigraham and myself are most likely the only people on this forum or possibly UK wide who would be taking their Yeti off road as a regular occurrence. I currently live off road though in all likelihood that will not be for very much longer as I will be leaving Wales for a different life.

If you would like a car company or dealership to have more input into tyre choice and other pertinent off road advice , then Landrover might well be the most likely candidate for that parenting. They have an absolutely massive amount of experience with off road vehicles. All of their vehicles are off road capable including the Freelander. The Freelander 2 has better off road credentials in most areas than the Yeti, better angles, more articulation, longer travel suspension and so on. The Yeti though has I beleive a better electronic chassis management ECU with its Haldex 4th generation which is quite something, not quite so able to be tailored as the Freelander kit but very fast reacting and it has an electronic locking rear differential something the Freelander does not have. By the way Landrover offer training days and advanced training for driving their products off road and have been doing this for many years. I have seen them in action and they do things at a very high standard. One of my sisters, a paramedic, has attended some of their courses many years ago so she has that skill to add to her advance driving skills. If you buy a Yeti then their are some other off road tutors with qualifications who also do courses, some of them initially trained by Landrover but would give advice directed to what you might have

I do not know your back ground or experience but judging by some questions and responses might I suggest that you might have a little way to go in understanding how some things work. I mean no offence by this observation. If you would like to PM me I might be able to answer some of you questions without so much public attention and reaction. These technical pages may possibly not be the right place for general questions and answers, normally they are for the normal Yeti pages but I might be wrong, I did not set this site up so I am only guessing. Possibly Llani might be willing to advise someone if he thought that they had a genuine problem with understanding some of the off road technicalities. Anyway good luck with your quest.

Hi all

Regarding winter tyres, I have now ordered my Yeti but rather than a brand new order, I have signed up to buy the local dealer's 140 Elegance 4 x 4 at the end of March at 3 months' old.

Therefore the car will have 17" alloy rims.

Here's the question, and I guess I might be looking towards Plumber who seems to have this fitment.

In resposne to my earlier question about the potential for fitting winter tyres in 215/55 - 16 siz e that were originally on my Passat, Plumber suggested that as these were not a recognised tyre size for the Yeti there might be an insurance problem.

Is there likely to be any problem with fitting 205/60 - 16 tyres on a 140 Elegance, even though this is not a standard fitment? I have heard suggestions on other forums that the fitment of non-standard steel rims with winter tyres resulted in an increase in premium because the wheels were non standard. Of course a 16" fitment is standard on 2 versions of the Yeti.

I note in the online handbook and as has been suggested here that there is an inference that 16" wheels can be fitted.

Apologies if I'm labouring this but as a keen skier I nearly got caught out on a trip to Austria as I had missed a change in the law that required the fitment of M & S plus snowflake marked tyres during the winter months. There appears to be a far better range of winter tyres in the 205/60 - 16 size than for 17" rims.

Many thanks

John

Hi John,

my insurer was OK with me putting 205/55 R16 steel rim'd tyres on my Yeti as A) winter tyres were not on their list of modifications and B ) I stated I was following the manufactures handbook in terms of tyre size and using genuine Skoda (VAG) steel rim's.

They made a note of my intentions an left it at that emoticon-0100-smile.gif

As you intend to use the same VAG components I see no problem, just stick to an approved tyre size.

I wonder if others are aware of this site?

http://ssl.delti.com..._p=Steel_wheels

I've used www.mytyres.co.uk in the past for winter tyres on other cars. You buy on line and they send your tyres to local tyre dealers who fit them for you.

I just discovered yesterday that they also do a steel wheel plus winter tyre service. I presume that they simply send the complete wheels to your address.

John

ps for what it's worth, I've been a member of www.slkworld.com during my ownership a Mercedes-Benz 230 SLK. The SLK will disappear shorlty as I've p/exed it for my Yeti. This forum seems just as good as SLKworld and I thought that was tremendous. Just thought I'd say it.

Hi again John,

yes the tyre and rim package as I understand it arrives ready to go so to speak, just need to put them on the car. Looked at this myself when tobogganing down hills on Goodyear Excellence tyres became unhealthy emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Decided against this route as at the time there was not an 94H rated Nokian option only V (Nokians were recommended by grahamar), plus I was unsure if the rim's would be genuine or after-market. Also appeared to be more costly than getting things separately once you factored in the shipping cost.

Glad you are enjoying the Forum; great place to pick up useful information which the dealers often cannot help with and discuss all things Monster associated with like minded folk emoticon-0100-smile.gif

I was wondering, do winter tyres, need notifying to insurance companies, under the modification to wheels policy clause? The Goodyears that came on my Yeti seem to be rated as Summer tyres by 'mytyres' and not four season. I think I might buy a set on steel wheels and tyres, and just use the alloys for summer. I presume I will need different studs/bolts/nuts for the hubs?

Hi Jeep,

always best to let your insurers know if you put different types wheel rim on the car just in case. Mine just made a note of it and left it at that. Regard wheel bolts if you are fitting genuine VAG rim's then you should be able to use the same wheel bolts without problem. Myself I bought steel rim's from my dealer as specified for the Yeti 'E' spec which are the same size as the alloys used on your 'S' trim.

You otherwise have a choice of sticking with 215/60 R16 or going for 205/55 R16 tyre size. The latter is the approved winter size for 16" rim's going by the handbook and information provided on the Skoda Germany web site but it makes no real difference.

Hope that's of help.

Thank you TP. I was thinking of buying ready fitted tyres and wheels from 'mytryes' Nokian WRG2 on 215/60 R16 work out at about £130 per boot including delivery. Would buying steels from dealer and having tyres fitted be close or less than this?

Hi again Jeep,

mine cost me having just totted up the bills £456.44 last December, which I think was a pretty good deal; broke down as follows:

4x steel rim's from my dealer @ £147.64 (kind enough to let me have some discount; 1x rim RRP £35.66 + vat)

Fitting at a local fitters £30 inc valve and balance

VAT at the time was 15%

From recollection I think I saved about £50 pounds over the then mytyres price for a delivered rim and tyre package at that time. So it might be worth shopping round to see what these thing might cost separately.

As a further note the 205/55 tyre was cheaper than the 215/60 as it's a much more common size.

So, if 16" are better than 17", what about 15" wheels.

You don't mention 15" wheels, unless I missed it.

Will these fit & if so what size rim & tyres?

Mike

Hi Mike,

as far as I'm aware the Monster is not designed to run on 15" Besides finding the correct stud pattern and offset, I suspect you may struggle to fit them over the front disc's and callipers on the higher bhp models.

Big thank you to 'The Plumber' for his advice.

I'm currently awaiting delivery of my new SM and decided to follow the plumber's example and order the same Nokian tyres as he's got!

I know its not very original, but they're made for Arctic conditions and should be OK over here. I'm waiting for two local delaers to give me a quote on 4 16" Skoda Steel wheels and I'll get my local non franchised dealer to fit them since they've always looked after me OK

Keep up the good work 'Plumber', most appreciated
