There has been a few threads with questions about the DRL's

Is the spare bulb in the headlight cluster the main beam bulb? I'm unsure if the DE module deals with the main beam as well as the dipped. I've posted elsewhere about this but I used to have a Corsa with DE headlights and I'm pretty sure the DE unit only dealt with dipped beam.

Would appreciate if someone could clarify.

Cheers

Yea there are two h4 bulbs in each headlight cluster one in the DE for dipped and the other for full beam

Thanks adam1985, thats what i thought. There has been some confusion on one of the topics that the inner bulbs (with the traditional refectors) dont do anything, people expect them to be side lights.

It would appear on the facelift models the DRL lights in the foglamp units now serve as the sidelight, the typical sidelight location is now main beam only. All makes perfect sense.

I was actually looking at the VRS specific brochure last night (found it on the web, never seen one in the flesh so to speak) and noticed (that when printed) it was possible to have either DRL or front fogs. On this basis, if front fogs were fitted, then you would need to have sidelights as well which are in the main headlamp unit, thus three bulbs. As i am fairly certain they will not make a different headlamp unit just for the VRS with DRL's it is the same fitting and consequently why there appears to be a redundant bulb. Anyway, just a thought.

I'm sure with the facelift Fabia (all variants, not just the vRS) that the slighlight/DRL bulbs have been relocated to the foglamp cluster. On non-vRS cars with foglights that there are two separate bulbs in the fog cluster for DRL and fogs. The fog lamp units on the the UK vRS are DRL & sidelight only, they have no foglight function though when the headlights are on they are illuminated to a very similar level as a fog light.

I may be wrong as I dont yet have my car so unable to prove it but I'm certain the main headlamp unit now only functions as dipped and main beam whether it had traditional or DE lamps.

Is a bit strange that they've done this as UK coppers are very funny about use of fog lights. Aware a number of Fabia owners have been pulled for this very reason. I dont know why they didnt put LED strips into the bumpers in the same vain as the Octy vRS, cost savings I suppose.

I was at the Edinburg meet on sunday, and me an can were there in our new vRS's, he has curve projecters, mine are standard, and I can confirm that the vRS cas completely different headlight units to the other fabia 2's, the main beam and headlight are the opposite way round, this sidelight bulb (and the main beam) being close to the grill in the centre, and the headlight to the edge, its the other way around in the other fabia 2's.

the discussion went along the lines of, the sidelight bulb is there, because in some country's front fogs will be mandatory, so in that country DRL's wont be fitted, and the sidelight will be utilised, and its just a standardised headlamp unit that will be good for all vrs's in all countries

  • 1 year later...

Does anyone know the law surrounding driving with DRL's on. I was speaking to one of Her Maj's finest who said I'm effectively driving with my fog lights on in condition that don't permit using them. Now, whichever way I have 'the switch', my DRL's are on either in broad daylight when my dipped beam aren't or they're on when I use my dipped beam lights....either way, ive had it suggested that in the eyes of the law, im driving with my 'fog lights' on when the conditions don't permit.

Can anyone advise? Cheers

I'm certain I have read on a previous thread that it is now law for all new UK cars to be fitted with DRL's

Has been since Feb last year.

EDIT - in previous post

The confusion is the placement & shape of the Fabia DRLs.

He should know better as far as the law goes. DRLs are marked E*** to comply with UK law.

They just 'look' like fog lights so I suppose there's room for error.

Ive since had some further "guidance" on this subject, a mate has run it past another one of her Maj's finest, who specialises in Road traffic law...

Apparently, as my vehicle was registered on or after 7th Feb 2011, it is the law for my vehicle to be fitted with DRLs, but the law doesn't currently stipulate that I must use them - hence why there is a switch that allows me to turn them off.

I must however ensure they are in full working order all the time. Should I be stopped by the police, for whatever reason, and I dont have my DRLs on, I must be able to prove they are in full working order (by flicking the switch behind the fascia plate under the steering wheel and turning them on). If they aren't working properly, my vehicle could then be deemed to be running with defective lights and the appropriate action can be taken against me.

The advice went on to say that DRLs 'could potentially' be mistaken for fog lights but considering the registered age of my vehicle, when driving with them on, I 'should' be Ok.....

Still a little ambiguous I know...but i thought id post it anyway

I think the likelihood of you being pulled and asked to 1) prove you have DRLs for the age of the vehicle and 2) told off for not having them on is as likely as the average motorist admitting to checking their cars road worthiness on a regular basis

Having the car 14 months now, not been flashed at all, although occassionally you get a second glance from some motorists but the bright LED's tell them they are not fog lights.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been flashed twice, once on the test drive and another a few weeks ago.

I have also been pulled over once by traffic police regarding them but a quick chat and I was off again.
