hi guys i replaced my turbo as old one was dead

so to the question is i took off the ko3-052 turbo but fitted the k03-053 turbo thinking they was the same but to now drive it and feel that it is not as powerfull as i thaught it used to be ive looked up and think the 053 came from the 150bhp golf but is still a k03s would the fact it came off a 150bhp car effect the performance of it as im new to the turbo stuff

Cheers mr barge :) just posting this from the golf website but I take it to mean they're all virtually the same

All the following turbos have the same installation dimensions and

thermodynamical performance. The differences are only in the actuator that

opens the turbine bypass valve:

K03-011 (5303 988 0011) 150 hp, 65 N actuator

K03-026 180 hp, 85 N actuator

K03-035 180 hp, 85 N actuator

K03-044 150 hp, 65 N actuator

K03-045 156 hp (Ibiza Cupra), 85 N actuator with 2 ports

K03-049 150 hp (Sharan/Alhambra), 65 N actuator

The 180 hp versions have an actuator with a higher opening force due to the

higher exhaust gas pressure (which is a consequence of the higher boost

pressure). Otherwise the valve would be pushed open by the exhaust gas

pressure.

The following turbos are a further development (since 2000) and have an

improved and slightly larger compressor while using the same turbine (still

with the same installation dimensions):

K03-052 180 hp, 85 N actuator

K03-053 150 hp, 85 N actuator

K03-058 150 hp/180 hp, 85 N actuator

Which engines?

Typically K03 are on AGU engine codes on lots of early VAG cars.

K03s = AUM AUQ engine codes from the following :

Mk1 Leon Cupra,Seat Ibiza Cupra, Mk1 Skoda Octavia VRS, Audi A3, A4, Boras

KO3s turbo numbers:

KO3-052, 053,058 or (K03/82 from a Polo GTI) For k03s

If you look into the inlet, the ko3 has 12 fins, the ko3s has 8.

The reason behind the different part numbers was due to one being from the Octavia (silenced version), one from the AUM/ARZ engined Golf/A3 and the other was from the 180bhp Anni Golf/Cupra

Id say just buy the k03-052 or 058 as the ones off the 150 bhp hold it back and i had put the actuator off my previous 052 on the 150 turbo as the one that came with that turbo was goosed and it still restricted it

I've spent over a hour reading up on the ko3s and it seems there is no difference in the 052 and 053 apart from the silencer. Same internals and actuator and reading up on the golf and Audi sites they get the same figures as we do with their cars when going stage 2. I only paid £60 for it off my mate at the scrapyard as the ko3 on mine now is rattling when it's warm so even if it doesn't make the full 250bhp it should be at stage 2 it should be at around 225-230bhp and that will be plenty for the wife and for me to have a play on the weekend

I'm not doubting it didn't on your car but I can't find anything on other sites where it backs that up. I wonder if the turbo was knackered as it seems these can suffer with hairline cracks or something. I'll stick it on anyway because like I said my turbo is knackered and this was only £60 so even if it doesn't make big power it's not the end of the world and I'm sure it will make more than what's on it now

Anyone able to say if they've successfully fitted a Ko3-053 to a mk1 octavia vrs with success?

I've just bought one second hand and now realised it's a 053, sending it away to get serviced/rebuilt before fitting it anyway, so I'll ask them about it anyway, but just curious whether it's simply a case of adjusting the actuator or whether there's a more severe difference between it and a 052
