Genuine VW LED Number plate Lights

Recommended Posts

Depends which LED bulbs you use. Some light up half the boot and road beneath, others are a little more discreet, like the OEM ones.

I got mine as I like the White illumination, not the ageing halogen yellow bulbs. Most new premium cars, BMW/MINI/Audi/Merc are fitted with LED. Skoda fit LED rear cluster on the VRS but cost cut on the reg bulbs, odd IMO. Now it's all nice looking.

Just finally fitted my LED number plate bulbs, just got some that were recommended earlier in the thread for around £4, have a mate with VCDS so borrowed it for literally 2 mins to do the coding and work a treat!

Was really straight forward! Why oh why do Skoda not do this as standard!?

Because it's far too sensible to fit something that not only looks good, but will last for a very long time.

Hi everyone!

I have to add some more information to this thread, even though it's old! Reason being that I had a lot of trouble changing the license plate-lights on my Skoda Octavia vRS-15. People might find this thread via Google (like I did) and might need the following information to solve the last pieces of the puzzle.

The instructions from LEDPerf (where I bought the LEDs from), and even the Instruction Manual for the car are both wrong, or at least not valid anymore. They said you simply push the light socket to the left and then pull it down. But it wasn't that easy.

I did the following to gain access to the bulb:

1. Used a screwdriver in the small hole to the left of the transparent plastic and pushed the entire socket to the left, until it started to budge.

1b. I had to move it back and forth because there is some kind of silicone or glue holding it firm.

2. Once it started to budge (it will easily move left/right, even when pushing with your fingers), then I moved the socket to the left, while attempting to push the right side down with preferrably a pry tool, at the same time.

3. The right side will drop down towards the license plate when two small hooks are freed up. However, it will only drop about 1cm, because the cabling are attached to that side, so don't pull it downwards more than that.

4. When the right side is released, I then pressed the entire socket back to the right and pulled the left side down until it popped out.

Then you can easily access the bulb and change it.. Remember to turn it 180 degrees if it doesn't work, since the LEDs are polarized.

Reattaching the socket was done by inserting the right side first, so that the hooks are placed at the right position, then push the left side up until you hear a distinctive click noise.

I hope this will help some of you out there, and hopefully spare a couple of frustrating minutes (and avoiding broken parts)

Cheers!

I have Ledperf's licence place LED set installed and IMO unclipping the original light was pretty easy with help of a little screwdriver. No errors whatsoever and they are really bright compared to the original ones, surprise surprise...

But since I went off for a drive after installing those LED's I noticed a little rattle from the boot and I guess it's coming from the rather big resistors that came with the LED's. How did you guys put these resistors in place, did you just "throw" them in before the actual sockets and let them be loose? First idea that I came up with is to stick those resistors in place for example with a piece of 3M two-sided tape... Just don't want any more unnecessary rattles in the car.

^Ended up "digging" the resistors out of the boot and used two-sided tape to plant them into the boot before placing the lights back. No more rattle, just hoping that the tape won't give up in near future...

Also installed boot LED's (from superskoda) which was literally a 1min job. Will be handy when it gets dark outside.

Hi mate :)
I am considering buying these leds from Ledperf but there also is another option and that is to get genuine Skoda/VW leds from http://www.carsystems.pl/license-plate-led-3af943021a-x2,id366.html
Then you also need http://www.carsystems.pl/license-plate-led-plug-play-warning-canceler-3af,id1096.html

...to get rid of the error.

The difference is like 13euros, in total. (50 vs 37e)
Do you have any pics of the leds + resistors from LEDPERF? I would like to see how it looks like as they show no pics on the website.

Thanks!!!

The carsystems ones is the ones I originally installed 4 years ago now on my mk3 vrs I had at the time.

In my opinion no comparison to cheap aftermarket ones that dont shine in the correct direction or  give them best light off

 Robfab,

I have installed the carsystems ones like you have and as you say, they are excellent quality. I've ordered resistors and just wondering are you still on your original set of them?

Thanks.

Hi,

I only owned the car for 12 months so been a while now but would expect them to be still workibg fine now. I had an audi S3 with the same lights (which came standard) with no issues.

Sorry mate didn't take any pictures of the led & resistors themselves... Only some before-after images when they were installed in place. But resistor are quite big in size, maybe around 7-8cm long. Just fits in, but as I explained I don't recommend just stuffing them in cause they will rattle in the boot. I used two-side tape for the resistors but maybe there's a better way too. The led's on the other hand were plug&play because they come with the full socket. Just clip the wires and led's in place..

Thanks for the replies.

I just fitted my MY15 VRS III with the following and it's working well:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-LED-Kennzeichenbeleuchtung-Original-3AF943021A-P-P-Adapter-VW-GOLF-PASSAT/151691688326

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-VW-LED-Kennzeichenleuchten-Passat-Golf-Plus-Sharan-Touran-3AF943021A/170910429894

I would just stress that the OEM LED number plate lights have a certain orientation. They fit in a certain way without any modification but this is incorrect! They need to be flipped 180 degrees and a small plastic tab cut off with a Stanley knife so that the light points at the plate and not straight to the ground. The correct way is shown below: (Image courtesy of @Robfab)

Also the wiring adapter with resistors needs to be altered too as per this:

I must say I dont recall needing to cut anything off but could be wrong as it was a long time ago.

Are you sure about this orientation ? When I checked some other pictures, they had different orientation.

Others may disagree but the Orientation without modification (i.e slots straight in) works fine for me. More than enough light.

Well l'm a bit confused. Why would anyone want to spend money on upgrade number plate lights. I can understand most other areas but as long as the plates are legally illuminated? Maybe Skoda owners have more income to fritter.

Why spend any money changing any aspect of a Skoda, or any car for that matter?

Personally, I find the use of halogen number plate lights, when other lights such as the tail lights are LED, makes the car look dated. LED looks more modern and is what is factory fitted to most stuff these days.

Well I checked all the pics, even the manual for these, and it shows they should be installed the normal way, I mean the way that you dont need any modifications.

To me the light is nice and as it should be. Even in this guide, they are installed the original way, https://www.drive2.com/l/9018561/ with the black "strip" closer to the licence plate/trunk.
Also check here :

Anyway, where do you guys buy them "light error resistors" ? I bought one but the connectors were different. Any ideas ?

Thanks
